TarHeelRavenParticipantThe rematch is on Saturday. Duke willed it’s way to victory in Chapel Hill a month ago. I believe Carolina has more talent while Duke is tougher mentally and a much better three point shooting team (obviously). It will be another great game that will come down to the wire in my opinion.
Duke wins if…
Carolina wins if….
Predictions????

BlueRivers25ParticipantDuke stole the 1st game. Duke wins if Carolina doesn’t choke again. UNC has more talent, more bodies, they will dominate the paint. Now its home cooking and looking forward to a regular season sweep.

OaktownWarriorsParticipantI’m watching the game to see WHEN Allen trips a NC player!

airenn34ParticipantThis reminds me of 2012 when Carolina got beat by Rivers 3 at the buzzer and then UNC went into Cameron and pummeled Duke. Duke is Duke especially at rabid Cameron but I think this will be the case. Highly unlikely that Carolina shoots that poorly again. Berry is shooting well and Justin Jackson has emerged. I just keep thinking and believing that Marcus is in a slump and he’s busting out come tourney time. So he can start and get going with this game. We all know Brice is gonna do his thing and Duke knows that, that’s why I wish Roy would stop being so stubborn and start Hicks. Kennedy Meeks is a straight up p####. I dont know what Britt offers them he’s hit or miss. I cant figure Theo Pinson out. Dude was a 5 star talent but i scratch my head watching him. It’s maddening being a Carolina fan. Duke always puts themselves in position to win cause of their 3 point shooting and tenacity on defense even with limited depth. What does Carolina have that they dont. They even have an abundance of talent but what is it? Is has to be coaching.

ncballerOne thing to keep in mind with Theo. He had surgery on a foot this past summer, and battled through injuries his freshman season. He did not get the chance to have a full summer to get back to the swing of things. I think we will really see him take off next season after a summer of being able to workout in full contact with everyone and the pros that come back.

TarHeelRavenParticipantThat 2012 game in Chapel Hill was a kick in the gut. Carolina was the far superior team with Henson, Zeller, Barnes, Kendall Marshall, Reggie Bullock, PJ Hairston and Mcadoo. Carolina also squandered like a 10 point lead in the last 5 minutes. That team was way more talented than this team, but the similarities are there. Carolina can win the ACC regular season title outright with a win at Cameron and Brice and Marcus and have some sort of success against Duke in a career where they have been dominated by them going 1-6. If Carolina plays to their potential, they can win the whole thing, but they havn’t played great all year except for maybe against Maryland and the butt-kicking they gave Miami. If you watched Theo Pinson in high school, he was an electric athlete. He doesn’t do any of that at Carolina. Instead of finishing on the break with thunderous dunks, he turns the ball over a lot and bricks a ton of jump shots. Carolina has way too much talent to be so up and down. Some games they look like they don’t care. It’s maddening. People are asking if the game has passed Roy by and maybe it has. His teams sometimes look like they are sleepwalking and simply play with zero emotion. Duke on the other hand, while obviously short-handed alwaysplays with passion and intensity. I think that it one of the main reasons why the series has been so lopsided recently. Duke has been getting dawgs while Carolina just has puppies.

TheGuyParticipantAs a Carolina fan do you want Roy out especially if UNC bounces early in the tourney? and who would be your shortlist of canidates?

Hype MachineI’m hypped for this game….I’ll go with Duke.
Duke plays with more confidence and are less afraid to lose. They have better coaching, and Cameron Indoor is always hostile.

airenn34ParticipantThats a great question. An important question and difficult to answer. Respect to Roy cause he has done great things at Carolina. His win pct is about as good if not better than anyone and a couple of championships. But lets get real the truth is the game has passed him by. He runs his system but it doesnt even fit the type of player he has. Remember when he tried to play Hicks at the 3? Wtf was that? Talk about playing your players to their strengths. He can still recruit but he doesnt get the elites. When he does get the blue chippers he doesnt develop them. Other coaches like Tony Bennet do more with lesser talent. Out of respect I feel they wont fire Roy but they bring up stepping down. Lingering health issues and age may be factors as well. If and when it does happen I think Carolina needs to break tradition and out its family tree. My picks are Shaka Smart and Sean Miller. Would also like Brad Stephens but he’s doing a great job with Boston. If Carolina sticks to its trees. Best candidate is King Rice from Monmouth over Hubert Davis.

ncballerRoy’s biggest problem is the fact he has failed to change his two post system. Now a days it’s all about spreading the floor making one on one moves. PF’s don’t want to be planted in the post where Roy has them. It’s interesting because Roy had massive success with the stretch 4 in Marvin and Jawad Williams, also switching PJ to the 4 saved that season. I understand the reluctance playing Jackson at the 4 for long periods of time, however both he and Pinson are more capable of it than Luke Maye who goes in there when Johnson and Hicks are in foul trouble. Recruits pay attention when the wrong guys aren’t playing as well. Green vs Ginyard, Drew vs Marshall, PJ vs Dexter, and since the injury Meeks vs Hicks. I think Roy has 3 more years left in him then he will likely retire. Will be interesting to see what he does when Jalek gets there. I think he has the chance to be UNC’s next all star. As it stands now though the offense is not fit for him. I would love for Roy to go small though with Berry, Woods, Felton, Pinson and Bradley which I think maximizes all strengths, especially with how effective Bradley is at passing out of the post.
In regards to a successor. I have it on good authority the university sent feelers out to Brad Stevens, Sean Miller and Shaka Smart to gauge interest for the inevitable. Smart would run to Chapel Hill if given the opportunity.

airenn34ParticipantNcballer, I read Roy offered Devon Dotson a scholarship and 247 has him going Carolina. How do you like him and what’s the reasoning for his recruitment when they already got Rechon Black looking like the next great carolina pg?

ncballerRechon and Devon are really tight and have talked about playing together in college for a while. Although they are both classified as PG’s their styles compliment each other very well. Dotson is a scoring PG in the mold of a Damian Lillard or Jay-Will, while Black is a distribuiting eyes up kind of a guy. Black reminds me of a cross between Kendall Marshall and Kyle Collinsworth, they could easily play together in the backcourt. It will be interesting to see how he develops as it is realistic he could be 6’9 or 6’10 by the time he gets to Chapel Hill. Both players have the chance to be something really special. I do think it comes down to UNC or Kentucky for Dotson.

airenn34ParticipantI also wanna add another ramification of Saturday’s game is the signing of Kevin Knox a top 10 talent. Carolina needs a recruit of his caliber bad. He’ll be in attendance and its gotta make sense thay whoever wins that game secures his commitment.

TarHeelRavenParticipantI agree. Think about the 2016 class. Bam Bam, Dennis Smith and Harry Giles and Roy wiffed on all of them. Carolina is starving for a top ten elite blue chip recruit. Theo and Justin Jackson I think were at least top 15 recruits but neither were one and dones. Justion is solid and MIGHT go pro after this year but should return and Theo just seems lost out there mostly. No other program I believe has profited from the NCAA scandal than Duke. They are absolutely killing Carolina on the recruiting trail. I would love to be a fly on the wall with K talking to a recruit. I bet he absolutely obliterates Carolina in terms of negativity and he is flourishing. Kevin Knox will be at the Duke game, so it would be in Carolina’s best interest to play with passion and a sense of urgency to impress this guy.

ncballerBam’s and Dennis’ recruiting situations were sketchy to put it lightly amd are generally not the type of recruitments UNC wins or persues that much. That being said, if it were 2008 Ingram and Giles would be Heels. Why the shift? I do think the biggest factors are we began to see a change in how basketball is played. No longer are we seeing the traditional two post up players offense, but more of a spread one on one. The second is that Coach K got involved in USA basketball. Don’t think the scandal has much to do with it.

nill650Participantcarolina might have better talent on paper, but allen and ingram have had better seasons than most of unc roster.without execution from paige berry and pinson it wont matter what johnson hicks etc do. the key to carolina beating duke is getting justin jackson more touches.I don’t see it being a huge factor unless they dont have a pulse being they have to get fired up for this game but the cloud hanging over unc is definitely hurting the program now and esp in the future. they really have no stars on that team with exception of johnson being a potential late lottery pick and unless they find a gem or two duke will likely start dominating this rivalry consistantly.

airenn34ParticipantCouple of things 1) When Brice is on he’s on. Nice job of Roy making his adjustments 2) Hey Hey Roy called some great timeouts and the team responded great 3) Joel Berry can do so so much more for this team if Roy just unleashes him. On Duke’s end there was some talk about how Kennard wouldn’t make much of an impact. Bull! I knew this guy was a stonecold killer the moment he signed for Duke. If you are the all Ohio hs points leader you damn straight this guy will make an impact. Im waiting for the day UNC signs a shooter of this caliber. Duke always gets the Sheyers, the Kennards. Last time we got a gunner like that was probably Wayne Ellington.
