valentineI’m not sure if this has ever been brought up on here, but there are certain teams who seem to be built to win conference championships and flame out in the NCAA Tournament. I feel that Villanova and Virginia are two perfect examples of this. I think it comes down to a lack of high-end talent which, in my opinion, matters more in March due to the lack of time to do the advanced scouting that is done in conference play.
Thoughts?

BiggysmallsParticipantBoth teams have high-end talent though. Josh Hart will most likely be the player of the year in the Big East and Malcom Brogdon is an ACC first-teamer and could be the defensive player of the year.
I think in Virginia’s case, they’ve got the talent to go deep. They have for the last two years but ran into an underseeded Michigan State team both times.
They don’t have a ton of firepower, so they can’t necessarily win in multiple ways. Thats probably what ultimately holds them back most, is the fact that if the score is in the 80s, Virginia has no chance. But their defense is good enough to keep them in any game.
Villanova is a good team, but they seem to be the same team every year and they lose because they settle on offense too often. Far too many 3s and they don’t play gritty defense. They don’t have much size usually, though Ochefu is okay. They are also in a weak major conference, so its kind of like the Gonzaga argument, where they might play teams better than a majority of their conference opponents as early as the second round.
