OhCanada-ParticipantAnd they really should have never hired him. George Karl’s coaching tendencies and Sacramentos core roster and even complete roster are possibly the least compatible place for Karl to coach in the NBA.
Before I start let’s make one thing clear. This is not Cousins fault. This is not Karl’s fault. It was a bad hiring.
When you look at Karl’s career and coaching style you see a pattern. He has always been extremely fast paced, he has always given his players freedom on the court, and he has never been known as a very great defensive coach.
DeMarcus Cousins should not be featured in a run and gun offense. What kind of sick joke is this. You have likely a top 5-15 big man ALLTIME when it comes to skill and talent who is a true post presence and you are making him run up and down the floor at a high pace.
The Kings do not have the best decision makers on offense. This year Rondo is really qaueterbacking the team but without him you have Gay and Cousins given space and freedom to operate as they place. It won’t result in success in crunch time because the team has no continuity or repetition to become comfortable with. For instance if the Warriors want a basket they will likely to a pick and roll at the top of the three point arch with Curry and Green with shooters in the corner, Green will dive to the basket and Curry will demand a double or he will just shoot an uncontested jumper like a layup, Curry will pass to Green demanding help from one of the defenders in the corner, then Green passes to Barnes, or Thompson, or Igoudala for an uncontested three. Karl’s system is loosy goody let em play! This doesn’t work because Gay and Cousins don’t have the greatest shoot selection and while Romeo is great at creating shots for himself and others he still struggles shooting.
Finally defense. The Kings are one of the worst defensive teams. Without Rondo and Cousins it would be a disaster. That’s why they drafted WCS. Bellinelli, Mclemore, Gay are not helping an exhausted Boogie Cuz defend.
Now the Kings have had team meetings to address these issues and try to change the playing style to no avail Karl wouldn’t budge. So before we just blame Cousins for everything do your research find out whats really happening. If Mike Malone were still coaching the Kings they would be above .500.

Hype MachineI think the opposite – If they remove Karl theyve just flushed 15m down the toilet and history shows Boogie probably wont like the next coach either.
If they trade Boogie and Rondo theyll get a bounty of assets and will probably lose for a while longer…but theyre not exactly setting the world on fire at the moment and I cant see any way they’re going to improve next season when Rondos gone.
Boogies going to be unhappy at Sacramento as long as hes there…hes the one that needs to go…Im of the opinion that theyll never win as long as hes around.
3 or 4 draft picks would be a good way to start fresh.

Kwame33ParticipantI don’t think he feels obligated, I’m sure he’s still coaching b/c he genuinely enjoys the job.

MopgrassParticipantCousins would be a more useful player and possibly a better player if he conformed to Karl’s offense. He’s great for a run and gun offense, but he prefers to labor at ill-advised shots and jumpers he needs to cut down on. Everyone knows how much potential Cousins has and if he could take some advice, he could probably reach it.
I think Rudy Gay should go though. He needs time with the ball and unlike Cousins, he probably doesn’t have the ability to play otherwise. I don’t think Gay’s game needs to change, just his team. Cousins needs to change.

llperezwhen it comes to taking sides on this between karl and boogie, im going to side with boogie. Reports were that karl almost from day 1 was trying to look for a trading partner for cousins and he did it while going behind the back of managment. You have to try and make it work when you are talking about the elite players. The fact karl was so quick to give up on cousins made it hard for this to work out from the start.

Meditated StatesParticipantHe will likely be your best player, yet most undisciplined and immature player. How will the man we see now as D Cousins ever lead a team? Team follows temperament of best player, and he is always a time bomb or just difficult.

BiggysmallsParticipantI disagree with the notion that the Kings don’t have a roster to play run’n’gun
Why can’t a good Center play in a fast-paced system?
If Cousins can get out and run, ahead of opposing bigs, how many easy baskets does he get? If you speed up the pace and wear out opposing bigs, Cousins can dominate guys because they are tired out and will probably resort to fouling.
He’s also a great rebounder…best way to run is to rebound and outlet up the floor.
Being fast paced doesnt mean teams NEVER play halfcourt offense. You can play fast and still run through your franchise center. It isn’t all or nothing and I don’t understand why guys think it has to be that way.
I always wonder when these coaching threads are made, who is the alternative? Like who would Sacramento hire to be the HC that could do a better job? I honestly don’t know because there are so many retread NBA coaches that I lose track, but Karl is as accomplished as the next guy. Why not try to make it work?
