reynolds07ParticipantMy Blazers are starting to play some really good ball this year led by Lillard who definetly deserves to be an allstar. Many predicitons before the start of the year didn’t see us winning over 30 games this season but we’ve already won 21 games and are in the 8th playoff seed out west. I love Stotts as coach and think he does a great job with any team his given and has one of the sharpest offensive minds in the game right now. I also like the winning culture that is being devleoped in rip city while our young players continue to develop like plumlee, mccolum and crabbe and even leonard and vonleh are starting to show real devleopment lately. However do you think it would be worth tanking at all to get a higher draft pick as we probably wont make much noise if we reach the playoffs we do lose that first round pick. What ya’ll think should we continue playing for a playoff spot or aim to keep and improve our draft spot?

r377ParticipantKeep trying to improve and make playoffs.
Kaman, Gerald Henderson and Mike Miller all off the books for next season so they should have some pocket money to play with in the off season….

HitsterParticipantOnce LMA had let it be known that he was likely to move on, the Blazers somewhat cleared the decks and didn’t rush to overpay other FAs or sign FA’s for the sake of it.
Most importantly they extended Lillard early so he is there to stay or at least he has very high trade value. They probably thought they would be a lottery team this season and if they tanked it wouldn’t be a disaster as they would blood young players and get a high draft pick.
Lillard deserves fully to be an All Star again this year and his backcourt partner C.J McCollum must be a leadimg contender for MIP award. If the Blazers have a backcourt giving them around 45ppg combined then they can retool the rest of the roster fairly easily.
With young star players in place and being a decent size market they can get into the FA mix if they want to, They may not be able to attract a very top FA but they could easily get one of the top 10 FA’s. I don’t see them overpaying for the sake of it but if the right player came up they might target him.
Out West there could be the old Eastern 7th/8th seed scenario whereby a team with a losing record gets into the play offs. For the Blazers it might be the extra play off money vs about a 3 or 4 place higher draft pick with an outside chance of getting into the lottery.

Mad MaxParticipantWhen people talk about being one of these borderline playoff teams or being a lottory team, I always side on going for the playoffs. It’s something the players obviously want even if it’s 1st rd knock out, just to play playoff basketball is something every player wants and a great reward for hard work throughout the season. It’s good for the fans, even just a couple home playoff games are fun and great for the city. Good for the owner and all those who work for the team/arena. You’re talking about the minute difference between a pick from like 11-14 to like 15-16, you’re going to throw away the playoffs for a pick like 2-3 slots higher? And you aren’t going to get into one of the top 3 picks, so I say go for it. Maybe I’m looking at it from the perspective of a player, but I promise you every player and coach wants to get into the playoffs.

HitsterParticipantGood point by Mad Max, teams will rarely if ever try to miss out on the play offs for a chance to move up a few places in the lottery. Also even if a team is 8th seed and they get swept by 1st seed, it brings in revenue and gives players play off experience.
Sometimes a perenial play off first round loser who isn’t challenging for one of the higher seeding positions might decide to blow things up post season especially if players might be out of contract, want more money, are ageing etc. This could well happen around draft day if they suddenly get an offer of a trade involving a top 10 lottery pick and the rebuild almost starts immediately.
Last summer once Blazers probably knew that LMA might move on, they traded Batum, didn’t overpay Matthews to stay.
