bluedevils12ParticipantOk so i was watching the orlando summer league games and i couldnt help but hear sum of the commentary on the games. The announcers were terrible i think. it was kinda funny tho. I mean the announcers were jus bashing the players, teams, and even each other. I mean half way during the game the guys were like ” Oh this is so boring” and “he definitely wont make the team not even a D league squad”. now it was funny and all but it got me 2 thinking about announcers today and who is my favorite. Some announcers have the ability to really make a big moment special. So for me its kinda like this: I like Mike Tirico, Jeff Van Gundy at times, Jay Bilas, and Mark Jackson. Dick Vitale i have a love hate relationship with becuz he wasnt very successful as a coach so its hard 4 me to take a lot of wat he says serious. But he does a lot for the V foundation and is a good guy. Fans love him tho. I know im forgetting some people but hey thats wat u guys are for. So who do yall like whter college or NBA?

Meditated StatesParticipantI learned a lot I did not know about the game while listening to his telecast. I will take the knowledge over the comedy. Bilas is cool too. I don’t like Van Gundy and his humor, but Mark Jackson is knowledgable.

llperezI don’t know enough of their names as far as the guys I like. but I know who I don’t like: Jon Barry, Reggie Miller, Magic Johnson, and Hubie Brown. But the worst is easily the dude from the celtics, I believe Tom Heinsohn, that guy is garbage. They have done sportscenter skits making fun of him.

Bison 49ParticipantAnyone who ever heard his comments, they were hillarious. Toronto really misses him. On the christmas game while panning over the miami bench, and sees Shaq. Out of now where he blurts out Aaaah Shaq-O-Clause. There were numerous others. “You got MOONED!”

BasketballGuru24ParticipantChuck Swirsky Is really the Best…..I Think He brought energy lol and awhole lot of comedy, not to forget that he was very knowledgeable of the game…even though he was not a big time guy like hubie brown but is very entertaining

Bison 49ParticipantHa ha, remember when he was talking about how you, “Gotta love Dick(Bavetta)” Only he left off the last name. It was classic Chuck, because he did not nitice what he just said.

maravich44ParticipantAlways loved Al McGuire for college basketball. Jim Durham is the best radio play by play man there has ever been. He could paint a picture so you knew exactly what’s going on in the game.

Killer_kat12345ParticipantHe brought joy and happiness to the entire Raptors nation for many years. Sadly he left the organization after the 07-08 season to join the Chicago Bulls. But i know that every Toronto Raptors fan will support me in putting him among the top leagues announcers.

llperezDickie V. His commentating is okay, but I think his opinions can be off. Also, I know that Laker fans will probably crucify me, but Chick Hearn was really bad before he passed. Not trying to disrespect the man who was one of the all time greatest broadcasters, but he got really bad the last couple years. Almost every game he would get players names wrong. I’m not talking about mispronounciations, I mean he would call Derrick Rose- Malik Rose for an entire quarter.

mikeyvthedonParticipantAt this current time are horrible. ABC/ESPN has all of the worst. Mark Jackson is as close to legally retarded as I have seen when analyzing basketball. Plus he has become a stereotype, it is pathetic. Than they hire Avery in studio, ugh, a voice that could kill old ladies. Jeff Van Gundy is whiny, but he sometimes has incite when he isn’t kissing his own ass about how great he and his brother are. Mike Tirico is purgatory. Charles is his usual idiot self, but at least he is entertaining in his ignorance, and sometimes even provides interesting points or insight (gasp). Kenny Smith is obnoxious, but not untolerable, and I like Chris Webber. He seems like an intelligent guy and is a welcome change from Magic, who while he was an incredible basketball player, should not speak on TV. Mike Wilbon should not commentate basketball, I am sorry. Jon Barry either, his dad was awesome, but he should move on to being bald somewhere else. Tim Legler is interesting when he talks about shooting, but otherwise I try to tune him out. Jay Bilas is trying to be this basketball Mel Kiper, and comes off even more obnoxious without even a 1/4 of the knowledge. He is a robot, he provides little to no insight, and yes, we know he played for Coach K at Duke. Sweet. He needs to get off of TV. Than, in Portland, we have even worse announcers for our local games, whoopie! We have a geriatric and a ventriloquist dummy.
Reggie Miller makes up words, wish he could do it for, “Cheryl lets pack our stuff and move to Antartica.” Sorry, announcers really upset me, we have so few good ones in basketball. When Hubie Brown is one of the best (speaking of geriatric), it hurts. I also have never seen what people see in Doug Collins. He is always a schmoe, get over 1972 dude. We all know Michael hired you because he could control you, even you know deep down inside. I honestly think Marv Albert is usually decent. Well, that about concludes my rant on announcers (I do have more though). I just wish we would stop being fed this formulaic Disney crap and could actually be talked to by people who know what they are talking about. I mean, my guys in Portland keep calling illegal defense (which is gone) and in the finals I had so many “did those guy really say that” moments I should have kept an ongoing list. I could probably remember quite a few if I tried, but wow. To conclude, fire almost everyone and start over ABC/ESPN basketball in general.

mikeyvthedonParticipantWas rad. I thought he was an idiot for voting Bargnani rookie of the year over Brandon Roy, when they played a similar amount of games and Brandon Roy had so much more of an impact, but I liked him a lot when I was growing up in TO. He was fun to listen to and did make games exciting. He also looks like Kip (Kiff?) from Futurama, which pleased me.

maravich44ParticipantForgot to mention Hubie Brown. When I hear him talk i think of a college professor trying to explain basketball. He is a really good teacher of the game and announcer.

llperezIt seems like I’m one of the few that don’t care for him. He has great insight and intelligence of the game. He points out small nuances that are often over looked. But I just find him kinda boring. Like Maravich44 said, he reminds me of listening to an old college proffesor, and that is not necesarilly a good thing.

tkd720manParticipantI can’t help it, but I love Walt Frazier on the MSG network (Knicks games).
He doesn’t offer anything brilliant, but at least once a game I’m falling out of my chair laughing.

j1232eParticipantWhen Jeff Van Gundy talks most of the time. My favorite of all time would have to go to Hot Rod Hundley. When I listen to games on the radio I can picture the game in my head because he explains the plays so well.

Adi JosephI’ll take Marv Albert, Mike Tirico, Mike Breen or Dan Schulman on play-by-play and Bill Raftery or Hubie Brown on color.

MattissickParticipantMike Breen is real witty and clever and funny. He looks like the typical play-by-play guy but he is really good. Gus Johnson has a great voice and he’s a good announcer haha he goes crazy. Good the UCLA/Gonzaga game and listen to him go nuts in the last couple minutes.

jdubsram-13ParticipantHe is my all-time favorite announcer. Its too bad he became sick for this past season because I wouldve loved to hear him talk about Rose. Since he was around in the Jordan years he could be one of the best to compare them. Its too bad that he had cancer and couldnt survive. I was at the United Center when they honored him for his accomplishments and was glad he could attend although he didnt look the healthiest. There is no one better than him. RIP Johnny “Red” Kerr

knicksfreakParticipantI love the Van Gundy- Mark Jackson duo.
I’m a homer so I have to mention Mike Breen and Walt Clyde Frazier. I have NBA league pass and its funny how biased some team announcers can be. The New York announcers are fair and dont let their allegiances get in the way of their commentating. MSG probably has the best local broadcasting of any NBA team. Most of the other teams in the NBA look like a high school broadcast.
