Good gracious that was one of the best perfomances I have seen all time from a UNC player.  39 points, 23 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 blocks for Johnson tonight against a big physical FSU front court.  I have been pretty critical of him throughout his career and am so happy he is figuring it out.  A lot less mental lapses, not letting his emotions get the best of him, and taking much better shots.

I think he may be trending up towards being a lottery prospect.

He was making Florida States’ whole defense look like a thrown together Pro-Am team.. seemed like every time down the floor Brice was getting loose behind the D on back door cuts or on offensive boards- moves extremely well without the ball and has great instincts cutting and on the glass- which bodes very well for his potential as an NBA player as he excels at scoring when the play breaks down.

Did the light just suddenly come on for Brice?  I mean if he had been this focused and intense since his sophomore he couldv’e been an all-time Carolina great.  He did this on the road against a good FSU team and a mammoth front line.  This wasn’t against some cupcake.  He was engaged, played hard, didn’t make any dumb fouls, just an insane performance.  There is no reason he shouldn’t get 20 and 10 every night for the rest of the season.  He won’t of course, but I think he just introduced himself into the national player of the year conversation, ACC POY and is a first team all-american as we stand right now.  He did have that 3 point performance against Clemson.  He has the look of "nobody can stop me" right now and that spells serious trouble for the rest of the ACC.

Mammoth front line? I mean they have a 7’4 guy but he’s about as good as my 8 year old sister. FSU’s frontline was missing their best big in Michael Ojo, Bojanovsky is rail thin, Koumadje as mentioned is terrible and also rail thin. Not to mention that FSU was playing small with Brandon at the 5 a lot of the game because of how bad their 7 footers are, and how badly Brice was dominating them. I want to see him dominate like this against a strong front line that will be able to challenge Brice and not just get bullied on the boards by him all game before I start pushing him into NPOY conversations.

Both you and Doris Burke seem to put a lot of emphasis on the impact that Michael Ojo has on games.  He is a massive human being at 7’1" 292 lbs, but the guy is not an impact player.  He averaged 2 points and 2 boards last season.  He may have been physical with Johnson, but Brice was a man on a mission tonight.  No one was going to stop him.

Never said he was an amazing player- but among FSU’s current crop of bigs hes certainly the best of them, as well as the best matchup against Brice. Wouldnt have stopped but certainly would have done better than the horrendous defense the other bigs played

Thank you for the clarification dude!  I guess I was just a bit salty or frustrated because Doris Burke kept bringing up Ojo’s absence and barely mentioned Meeks’ who is a much more impactful player.

I agree with you that the FSU bigs are pretty awful.  I guess "mammoth" was the wrong word to use.  They have one of the tallest teams in the nation averaging 6’9′ I think I saw.  That one skinny guy who threw the ball into the stands after getting frustrated has no business playing D1 basketball.  He is awful.  FSU is a solid team.  You’re right by saying I’d like to see Brice dominate against some NBA size and talent.  He won’t see much in the ACC.  Brice is the best power forward by far in the ACC.  Anytime you do 39 and 23, it’s impressive, even if it’s against lesser competiton, it’s impressive.  Thrown in the fact it was on the road in conference and he’s only the 3rd player in NCAA history to do 30 and 20 on the road, it’s big.

Doesn’t this performance, combined with the Clemson performance sum up Johnson and the whole UNC team for about 5 years now.

When they play their best, they are better than maybe everyone in the country, but at their worst, they are maddeningly inconsistent.

Makes it hard to be a Tar Heel fan.

Never thought I’d see a better performance than the Sean May vs. Duke game where May put up like 28 and 26 on the Landlord. I straight up fell in love with UNC that year mostly because of May—man I wish he would’ve been good in the NBA, I was young so I didn’t see it then, there was no way he’d make it as a 6’9 "below the rim" center.

I think Johnson could carve out a nice career as a 3rd-4th NBA big. A solid backup who can come in and give a team 12-18 minutes, score 5-8 points, grab a couple of rebounds and fill in at times. Like a Dante Cunningham or a poor man’s Jordan Hill.

Difference in Johnson is if he isn’t scoring he is still giving the team production in other areas.  Example he scored 16 against Cuse and only had 5 rebounds but 8 dimes.   Had UNC hit some outside shots he would of had 10+ assists last night.  He was getting the UNC offense easy buckets inside with his passing.  Years before if he wasn’t scoring all other aspects of his game would suffer.  Same with when he would get in foul trouble.  He still commits dumb fouls sometimes but he has learned to play thru adversity within a game much better this year.  Without losing the emotional energy he plays with that can make him dominant at times.

It’ll be interesting to see what he can do this year against Duke assuming Amile Jefferson is 100%. He makes Duke better defensively and on the boards. He and Marshall Plumlee could give him some trouble. NC State may be able to do well against him

Duke has been killing UNC on the recruiting trail recently and are defending national champions.  That being said, it is ridiculous to say that Marshall Plumlee could give Brice Johnson any trouble the way Brice is playing.  Amille Jefferson is the huge key here.  If he is out, Brice could go off again.  If Ingram plays the four, Brice would eat him alive.  Amille is the only low post threat Duke has,  Plumlee is playing out of necessity.  If Duke had anybody decent down low, he would be on the bench,  Chase Jeter is a ways away from contributing at the college level.
