valentineLike the title says….
Everyone is a different age, size and skill level. It can be playing, coaching, gambling, gaming…whatever. No rules…and try not to be too arrogant..or critical of others.
I won 5 or 6 rec league titles over a 24 year playing career, including leading my HS to the semi-finals against several more highly fancied schools. I was known for my all-court lockdown defense, shotblocking and flambouyant passing and playmaking, however was never known as a ‘pure scorer’. My player comparison was AK47 (minus a few inches…but its all relative).
I was never on scouts radar but it was always about fun, fitness and winning.. I retired last year. I knew it was time to go when the girls started whooping me in the ‘mixed gender’ league lol
Tell us your basketball background.

ZouldiersParticipantNot known as a shooter but i can score well below the arc. Shooting in the mid was my game as well as driving to the rim and some post up. I rebound well and can defend on or off the ball and can get a couple of steals and can pass when needed. Biggest problem was free throws and not sure why. Unfortunately, I only see it as a hobby. I am also the kind of player who will dive for the loose ball and take pain like its nothing.

EspressoParticipantNo 3s, I look for shot off the dribble. Stepbacks and pullups withthin 15 feet.
I’m am not able to play in a friendly manner, as I say all the time "there is no such thing as friendly basketball". Always stay active, competitive personality translates right in to the court, which in combination with my smoker lungs and poor conditioning, I get tired halfway through the game (full court), and im 25 smh.
Not the tightest handles but deceptively shifty, if you su.ck on D my first step will make you look like a dumby on several occasion, all about horizontal athleticism and change of speeds.
I look for the floater alot when playing 5v5 because the lanes are clogged. Hotspot is the free throw line. Go to move: running pullup from the elbow (think Pierce). Lots of trash talk with a tendency to over complain about what I thought was a bad call bad call. Very physical brand of bball.
Comparison: D Wade

khaled_a_dParticipantIf I am gonna compare my game to NBA player skill set wise it will be like this
The ball handling of Mcgee
The defense of Calderon
The shooting of Deandre Jordan
The size of Cp3
The athleticism of Zaza Pachulia
Obviously relative to the playing level too 😀
That is what happen when you are from a country that isn’t into basketball and catch the obsession to the game very late .0 - Posted on: Sat, 12/19/2015 - 4:55am #1032376

SubZeroParticipantI’ve been a point guard all my life. I was the shortest guy in my grade until 8th, and then by 10th grade I was 6′ 1″ and eventually the tallest guy on my team Senior year at 6′ 3″ (I know that’s a regular point in the NBA, but I went to a small private school and I go to a small private college). So I’ve always been able to pass and dribble since that’s all I could do until high school, but I can post up now too when smaller guys guard me. I’m only 180 pounds though so I can get pushed around pretty easily. I’m a pretty good shooter from all areas (3s, stepbacks, pull ups, fadeaways) and can usually get in the lane, but sometimes have trouble finishing because I’m not super athletic. I love playing D and usually whoever I’m guarding doesn’t score on me, unless they hit a lucky 3 or just outsize me by a lot. I get a good bit of blocks because I’m taller than most guys and have a decent wing span, and what I like to think are good blocking instincts. Although I hate how white guys are always only compared to other white guys, I would say my best comparison would be Gordon Hayward, but worse finishing around the rim

airguytonParticipantI like to shoot threes deep and hit midrange shots I’m good at finishing with both hands on defense I play straight up but wen they drive I get my teammates to double on the drive since I usually defend the best player this is a gd way to lockdown the paint

nykfan92whats up guys, use to have an account, then it was suspended for some reason. (i think its because i trashed john wall back in 2010.)
with that being said my style of play is;
6′ point guard. love to try and make a crazy pass, works half of the time. i always play to the level of competiton. so if im playing with guys who are way worse then me, i play sluggish, turn the ball over, and i make a zillion excuses. however, if im playing with elite competiton i play really well, and definitely hold my own.
if my team is struggling to score i try to take over. for example, i was in a league a couple of summers ago and my team was losing 19-6 (something like that) i rattled off 10 quick points to get us back in it.
i can be a great teammate, or a big d*ck. i sometimes show up teammates and yell at them if they are playing bad or not smart.
last but not least, if someone fouls me hard or is talking trash or makes a bad call in a pick up game that is blatantly bad, my temper flares out of control and i attack the rim without reprecussion (for me or any of the defenders)

Brennan23ParticipantIn highschool I was known for defense and hustle plays but as my game has evolved throughout my years out of school I have devoloped a very unorthadox yet highly effective offense game. I would consider my game a mix between Antawn Jamison with all his floaters and high arching push shots and Dirk because of my unblockable fade away and various post moves. And my defense has regressed to about the level of late career Jamison.
Love the post though, very interesting to listen to others describe their game.

Memphis MadnessParticipantGrowing up, I was more like a CDR type with herky-jerky junk shots from 15 and in. I mean, in the backyard, in rec center pickup games, and in gym class in High School. No big time for me. ALTHOUGH one girl in our High School gym class who went on to play in college always used to torch us guys. haha.
Driving bank shots were my thing. Mid-range jumpers. Not a long range shooter, but I had a SCORER’S mentality. Basically, dribble drive stuff. Also had some Vlade Divac moves where you dip under, and shoot the ball under the other guy’s hand.
I remember one time about a decade ago where I played a pickup game at a local college with really scrub players and I had a few skyscraping floater shots, not even the Tony Parker kind, but more PRIME ICEMAN GEORGE GERVIN.
NOW: slower. Like Marc Gasol. I like to take a full wind up hook shot to see how that is going. I like to pass to the open man. I don’t mind taking a wide open mid-range shot, but I would rather pass. Crafty inside, sometimes I can rebound, sometimes I can’t. Defense is pretty bad now, unless I play against someone who is smaller, slower, and less skilled than I am. haha. Kind of like ’96 Final Comeback Magic. A 6’9 point power forward who couldn’t really guard anybody.
I would say that I can either play the point forward spot (I CANNOT guard the really quick guys and I NEED another ball handler on the court with me), or a Shane Battier type role where I get in the way on defense, and out of the way on offense (while occassionally hitting a jumper or two).
If I am in the right frame of mind, and have some bounce (for me) off the floor and have some good energy going I can play like Rodman, mixing it up inside, rebounding fairly well, and then just guarding different guys.
On a larger scale, I think I would be a pretty good coach. My birthday is the same as a couple of legendary coaches, one who coached the ’86 Celtics (KC Jones), and another who coached that 33 straight win Lakers title team (Bill Sharman). I have a good sense for basketball and I understand spacing pretty well. I would be a good coach for the coming BIG Small Ball Era. In this new era, you basically have a CENTER, then two forwards, and two guards. Kind of like the old days where the guards could do some of everything (same with the forwards). A bigger more athletic version of the Willis Reed Knicks’ teams would be a good comparison. I would build around the best guy on the court. My Big 3 would complement each other then you put the rest of the team around those guys. I would probably go with a starting five, then a 6th man specialist off the bench. Then, finally a scrappy, hustling second unit. I would basically play an 11 man rotation.
I was actually thinking about this last night.
As a coach I would have a playbook that is 100 pages long.
Each page would only say "PASS THE $%%%@ BALL!!!!"

teropParticipantIn high school I was more of a semi-athletic 6’1 pg who averaged double digits points and assist. We had decent small city talent with 4 or 5 others on the team playing some college ball so I didn’t have to score a whole lot. In AAU ball it was nuthing to get 25 plus though. Juco coach revamped my jumper so that made me pretty good in juco, but deadly in summer leagues and pickups. I ruptured my achilles playing in a summer league after junior year playing NAIA ball and that was it. I think I was more of a Ramon Sessions type, with deceptive quickness, real pg skills, but could get my own if needed…Now as an overweight 38 year old middle school coach, when I play someone always say I got big dog so I usually have an advantage since I always played pg and can move pretty good for my age. Plus my jumper is the best it’s ever been, probably cause that’s all I shoot unless it’s a 35 and up league. As a coach my squad usually presses half court and run on offense…

ZachAttackParticipantWell, I’m in 11th grade right now. I don’t really know who I compare to, so like swaggimal did I’ll just state my strengths and weaknesses
Strengths:
Mid-range jumpers
Circus shot layups
IQ
Chemistry with whatever team I’m on.
Driving
Ball Handling
Defense (I average like 3.5 steals a game, the highest on my team)
Weaknesses:
Reading Screens
There are times when I just shoot as soon as I get the ball. But that only happens for like 1 or 2 minutes at a time.
A little nervous on the court at times

daggers818Participant– 52 years old now, dang. Hung it up last year after 45 years of ball, by my count over 10,000 games in my life (would normally play about 5-6 games per week).
– Growing up and living in the SFV of L.A. during the early 70’s Lakers heyday, so modeled my game after my idol, Gail Goodrich, a smooth-shooting, short, white guy, with a good all-around game.
– Played high school ball, made all-league, but not nearly good or big enough for college
– As an adult went on to win several rec leagues with a team that played much like the current Warriors, small ball, shooting, defense, ball movement
– Worked for Disney for 15 years and played in many of the entertainment leagues for 13 of them. Pretty competitive ball featuring over 40 teams and many ex-college players. We won 33 games in a row in the regular season once over 3 years but only one title, sadly losing on heartbreak last second shots twice. Later years saw us win 4 titles in a row before I left the company.
– My game evolved to purely a 3 and D game as I got older. I made about 45-48% of my 3’s on average including seven times reaching seven 3’s in a a game (but never could get 8!).
– Highlight of my "career" was playing pickup ball one summer day in 1995 when who rolled up, but Shaq and Dennis Scott and some of their posse. Shaq hung out all the time in LA during his Magic years and often would just show up and play with strangers. Our tallest guy wa 6’5 and looked like a midget next to Shaq. Scott was hitting 3’s from half court. Crazy. Second best was playing against Gilbert Arenas following his sophomore season at Arizona. He also showed up to play some pick up ball. We put two guys on him, but he destroyed us, and in one sequence stole the ball, weaved down court, threw the ball up off the backboard, and dunked on two dudes — we all went batshid!
– Biggest heartbreak: 2 seconds left, down by one, taking ball out in the backcourt, inbound to me at the oppenents free throw line, one dribble and a 45 foot underheave later it banks in off the bacckboard to win the game. The crowd goes crazy. But wait…upon further review, the shot got off late. No basket, game over, We lose championship game. I was 8 years old.
4 broken noses, torn MCL, torn labrum, cracked rib, 6 broken fingers, countless sprained ankles, and too much trash talking later and it’s major osteoarthristis in my hip that took me out. Got bone-on-bone now, and I can’t take the joint pain any more. Looking at hip replacement surgery. I always said I’d play until the wheels came off! That’s my story.

Magic JordanParticipantIm 6’0" 185. I used to a good athlete. Dunked a few times but I could never palm the ball so I couldn’t always dunk. I have a 6’3" wingspan and great reflexes and hands. Loved to play the passing lanes.
Offensively I was a good spot up shooter… As most from my area are. I love to move the ball and make the extra pass. Give me an assist before a bucket any day of the week. I hate to hold on to the ball, I try to always keep it moving. I consider myself high IQ.
Defensively I would always try to guard the best player because I love to compete. I will foul you hard if I feel like it or don’t like you. We could fight about it after if you wanted. Used my quickness and length to guard but would rarely pick up full court… F that. I also love to use confusion techniques on defense…. You k owwhere I act confused, maybe pretend I’m going one way to bait the offensive player etc.
Most of all I hate to lose… It’s not even that I love winning so much but I hate to lose. I’ll do whatever I can to prevent it. I always thought about my game that if I was the 2nd or 3rd best player on the team I liked our odds. Especially in pickup games.
Not the piece, but a piece. My NBA comparison… A more athletic Shane Battier.

Mad MaxParticipantI would say similar I’m similar to JJ Redick. Spot up shooting is my greatest strength, although I can be very streaky, I’ll miss my first ten shots but then knock down the next 10. I move really well off the ball, make good cuts. Decent enough ballhandler, nothing great, I’ve got a couple go to moves but won’t be on the AND1 tour. Pretty good and willing passer, always looks to hit the open man. Defensivly, I’m not that big or super fast so I have to make up for my lack of physical attributes with effort and IQ, pretty good with rotating and helping and attcipating on defense. Not very good on the boards, I will ocasianally hustle for an offensive rebound, but I’m not one to work hard on the boards. Being 5’11 I don’t have much of a post game but I’ve got a pretty decent Dirk-esque one legged fader. I’m pretty good at finishing despite being a short white guy with no hops, I can finish with both hands, but prefer to go to my right. I’ve got a solid floater/push shot when driving.
Strengths
3 point range
shooting touch
Cutting and moving off the ball
good IQ
hustles and plays unselfishly
Quickness
Weaknesses
Size
Rebounding
Streaky shooter
athletic abilties
limited ball handling
Currently conditioning

Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantDuring my prime I was the guy that no one in the gym wanted to guard during pick up games. Not necessarily because of my skill level but because I would never stop moving on the court. I patterned my game after guys like Reggie Miller and rip Hamilton. I was a very good (albeit somewhat streaky shooter) with a very quick release. I wasn’t a great ball-handler but I did have a pretty wicked hesitation dribble move that would give some players fits and a floater that I could use to throw more athletic shot blockers off when I did drive to the basket. My natural feel for the game and passing instincts were also good.
I was the leading scorer for my high school team and played some juco ball but unfortunately my physical limitations prevented me from going further. Being a 6-1 160 lb undersized sg with below average quickness and athleticism will do that.
I continued to play and terrorize the open gyms and rec leagues throughout my 20s but my career came to a screeching halt when I started having serious knee problems at 30. I haven’t played in the past 2 years and recently had surgery to replace cartilidge in my left knee. I’m hoping that it will allow me someday to get back to at least playing the game in some capacity because I really miss it.

UncledrewParticipantWhen I was in highschool I was a 6’0 sharp shooter. Made over 60 threes my senior year in 2007 playing a class ahead of my age (should have graduated 2008) but should have made twice that. Played on a talented team yet very selfish didn’t get nearly as many touches or shots as I should. My mom always compared my game to steph curry because we’re lightskin and can shoot lights out but I always strive to be much more then a shooter. I worked on my handle religiously since 9 years old and rarely do I go into a gym where someone has a better handle even today. Today I train my little cousin who you may hear about down the line. He’s a true 13 year old eighth grader who plays the point with high Iq. Watch out for Jacob Hukins class of 2020.

zcnumerounoParticipantBeing from a smaller school, I played as a 6’2"-6’3"-ish 4.
I could knock down the ocassional three and finish decently in transition, with the ocassional dunk in transition, although still wasn’t much of a scorer.
I was definitely more of a point forward, even asked to bring up the ball on ocassion for my high school team. I was a pretty good passer.
My best asset was definitely my defensive prowess. I was usually asked to guard the opposing team’s best offensive player, although I wasn’t tall enough to record many stats defensively, I still could lock people down in my hay day.
Boy do I miss high school ball.
