JordoParticipantThe Cleveland Cavaliers decided to pay Tristan Thompson mini fortune of $82 mil this summer after a lot negotiations. At the moment Thompson is avg 7ppg off of 6 FGAs,10 rpg at 27 mins a night. I just wanted to get some of your guys thoughts? Everybody has been trying to justify some of these ludicrous contracts on the cap increase and TV deal but I personally can NOT wrap my head around giving a solid role player superstar money. Maybe somebody that follows the Cavs more in depth can give me some clarity but from the outside looking it’s doesn’t look good.

Meditated StatesParticipantAs stupid does. Everyone knew he was not worth that kind of money. Biggest waist of dollars in the L right now.

GreekballinHe’s just a rebounder with no offensive skills, he defends the pick n roll well, thats about what he does Smh.. This is a bad deal for CLE

KingslayerParticipantYou are spot on in the assessment of TT as a role player OP. He serves his role very well as a great rebounder and energy big man on both ends of the court, but that’s about it. He doesn’t shoot or score much from the post, and is only an average rim protector at best. TT is a valuable role player for a contending team, but he is severely overpaid. He has little upside left to improve his game, given his limitations, so what you see is what you get.
Several factors led to his mammoth contract including the rising cap, his playoff performance on the national scene, and most of all: the desperation of Cavs’ management to make Lebron happy at all costs. Dan Gilbert’s net worth is $4,5 billion, so he’s probably sleeping pretty easy.

MatosParticipantPaying Tristan Thompson that amount of money is an injustice to the underpaid players in the league. But he cashed out because he knew he couldnt replicate his playoff performance from last season with Love being around this year.

markfitz14ParticipantI think they did it just to make Lebron happy. But they also knew that they have a chance to win and needed him to make a run at a title. SO they way overpaid becuase they got stuck. They got stuck becuase there was no toher quality big men on the market. They needed to have a team this year that could win it all and had depth. So they were forced to spend extra now becuase they simply could not hold on to the money and try to get someone else next year. It had to be now.
Also I think just having Lebron makes the Cavs so much money that it literally doesn’t matter how much they spend or go over the cap. Gilbert prbly dosen’t care much about luxury tax becuase Lebron’s must watch and they make it back by selling out every night and all kinds of other marketing.

Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantWhen you have the best player in the league in his prime on your team you do what it takes to keep him happy and go for a championship. If it means slightly overpaying a role player like Thompson, so be it. I personally don’t think it was that big of an overpay given the current landscape of the NBA. He is a limited player but what he does well he does extremely well and he doesn’t go outside his comfort zone really. Don’t forget how important he was to them getting to the finals last year.

Stop_basketball_nonsenseParticipantLook i get where the you guys who say he is gwtting overpaid are coming from, but he is a huge part of the cavs current foundation. Considering the cavs was a healthy scorer( love or kyrie) didnt matter away from winning the championship, only helped Thompson’s case. He is their best rebounder on many nights. A solid defender, has a decent hook shot, not a weapon consistently, but he does not need to be. Didn’t green for golden state get paid a huge contract for what he does in his swiss army knife role for the warriors? He and many other players who are playing a role will keep getting these kind of contracts because with the new TV deals guys becoming free agents will be sought after with severity because teams will pay what they want for players who they see as contributors to winning in their system.
I was one who said.many guys was getting overpaid, but now that I try objectivly as I can in viewing the situations. I try to put in context the concerns of the teams like the warriors, cavs, & even the bucks with Middleton, among other examples. As long as he keeps helping them win while rebounding the way he does,Thompson, I think the cavs will be content with the $ they paid him.

MatosParticipantBucks overpayed Middleton and Cavs overpayed Thompson – point blank. No sugercoating.
Justifying their contracts is absurd. Team need (especially involving role players) is no excuse to overpay a player as drastically as the Cavs did.

OhCanada-ParticipantHa he cashed in. Can’t be mad at him unless your a Cavs fan. Even then he serves his role so as long as the win a championship I guess it’s money well spent.

nill650ParticipantHow much you get paid should never govern your desire to work , but if your work ethic and skillset were the only thing that governed your future and that gets you paid ,its a bad deal but when the org expects you to work harder and fronts you the cheese, you damn well better go earn it. so far this season he has’nt done anything coming off the bench worthy of a big payday. So insert him in the starting line up and bring Mozgov off the bench, Thompson will get what he wants,The Cavs will get better bang for their buck and at the end of the day He will likely prove to be worth every penny. Most underated offensive rebounder in the league.

doubledribblerParticipantCavs were kind of in a bad spot. They didn’t have any money or other options on the market and it came down to bringing an important piece back or likely letting him go and getting nothing back. If you are competing for a championship, it’s kind of hard to just let a young player go with nothing coming back or no one to fill that void. The problem is, he hasn’t gotten any better. He’s like a poor man’s Taj Gibson, except he can’t shoot outside of 3 feet and isn’t that good of a defender. I still think it’s a contract they will be able to move after the tv deals become official.
It’s just tough to watch. Seems that all their returning players regressed except for Dellavadova and Lebron.

UncledrewParticipantTristian had the biggest cosigner…Lebron. Like someone said earlier the cavs couldn’t spend the money on another player so it was a perfect time and situation for tristian. His playoff success last year had alot to do with the absence of Kevin love but even as good as he was neither his play or numbers suggested he was worth 82 million dollars(more then John Wall, klay thompson, Demarcus Cousins and the list goes on). On his best day he’s worth about half of that contract. On the bright side, he’s still 24 years old and will play his best basketball over the course of the contract although they will never see 80 million in production. Rule number 1….never pay a bench player max money Rule number 2…never pay a one deminsional( offensive rebounder) undersized center with limited ball skills max money…and Rule number 3…..see rule 1 and 2
