Chris paul hornets days were clearly his best but in 2015-2016 season chris is averaging 17 ppg 8.3 asst 3 boards and 1.7 stls. His 8.3 assist are his lowest since his rookie year and his 1.7 steals are his lowest EVER. Granted the season is still young but with cp3 being 30 years old and several other point guards clearly better at this point( westbrook, chef curry, healthy irving) is it safe to say chris is no longer in the elite category?

He’s great, but he can’t bring it every night anymore. He’s taken a clear step back, sadly. Age catches everyone – small PGs sooner than most.

    I’d say CP3 is still a top 3 PG.

Curry is the obvious #1, Westbrook #2

I have CP3 ahread of Lowry and John Wall rounding out the top 5.

Then from 6-10, Teague, Conley, Bledsoe, Lillard, Jackson.

Once Kyrie is back and healthy, He will skyrocket up this list.

Not sure how Jeff Teague is 6 on that list. He may not even be the best point guard on his own team.

I agree with your top 5, but then I have Bledsoe, Lillard, Thomas, Conley, Jackson

I think so, I’d put him behind only Curry and Westbrook for now, and still well ahead of Irving. In fact I would take a couple other guys over Irving. I have faith he’ll pick it up and end the year with better averages than he has right now, as long as he stays healthy.

Isaiah starting to gain major traction as a high level PG now that he’s starting. I’d put him over Reggie Jackson.

I don’t see Isaiah as a complete PG like Reggie- he doesn’t get his teammates involved the same way. He’s a great scorer but I see him more as a Jason Terry type combo, though a much better passer than what Jet was. He’s averaging 6 assists a game but I think he would thrive a lot better with another ball handler next to him so he could focus on finishing the play with a bucket and not initiating it and looking for others in their spots, whereas with Reggie I think he provides better playmaking despite the similar stats in the assist department- he’s a better penetrator and if he had as many shooters around him as Isaiah I think he would have at least 8 assists a game. The other edge I would give Reggie is his defense- Isaiah isn’t a bad defender, he’s just too small to be an especially effective defender.

Thomas’ numbers on defense, both advanced and regular stats, are exactly the same as Damian Lillard and only a little worst that Reggie.

He also averages just as many assists as Reggie, without a behemouth to throw alley-oops to.

There is a perception of Isaiah Thomas that he is a lesser point guard, but every stat bears out that he is at least top 10.

He’s definitely not 100% healthy. Not that player (or anyone) every truly is but his injuries can linger and heal much slower if you don’t rest them. I believe he had hamstring/groin injuries at the beginning of the season and a rib injury recent, all of which can signifcantly impact your play.

I wouldn’t write off CP3 and the Clippers just yet. They are dealing with injuries to their best player and integrating a bunch of new pieces.

You can put CP3 at #3 based off of longevity and respect but I’m taking into context overall player talent, age and future of a franchise if you give them the keys and with that said I have to give the edge to Irving wall Lillard and Bledsoe at this point ahead of cp3….People will say these guys aren’t better but assist numbers aren’t everything…point guard roles are changing with the incorporation of point forwards, pace and space and which has created more scoring guards. At the end of the day the name of the game is to outscore your opponent so if you need a bucket in the 4th who you gonna go with Cp3 or Irving/lillard??

Paul is still the best pure floor general in the NBA but the pg position has changed rapidly in recent years. The new breed of pgs (guys like curry, Westbrook, Irving, lillard etc. ) are all guys that put pressure on the defense with their ability to score the ball and create opportunities for others off of that.

Paul fits the mold more of the old-school definition of pg position ( guys like Stockton, Nash, Kidd, etc.). These are guys that have the ability to score but only really looked to do so as a last resort and look to create opportunities for others first.

To answer your question, I still believe Paul is a top 3 pg and top 10 overall player at this point, although he is starting to show some signs of decline. However, as the NBA is shifting toward more positionless basketball, with bigs that can handle the ball and create opportunities as well as guards, it may be possible that old-school pgs like Paul may not be quite as valuable as they were in the past.

Talking about PGs (not just statistics) so it speaks to being able to lead your team as the floor general, handling the ball well, distributing, and scoring.

Curry, CP3, Westbrook, Wall, Irving – top 5

    Lowry, Conley, Lilliard, Rondo, Teague

I forgot this is draft.net where you have to be specific as possible….we all know Chris is a very good player he’s been the standard at the pg position for years but…when I say elite I mean game changing to the point when he is playing he makes his team so much better that if defenses don’t execute the game plan to stop him in particular they will lose and I’m not talking about Regular season teams I’m talkin about championship caliber teams. The only point guards that have that ability today is Curry and Westbrook. For people who don’t want to include Irving he’s plenty capable as we’ve seen the spurs game as well as the brilliant performances in the 2015 playoffs where he’s torched opponents. The injury is clouding some judgement on one of the 3 best pure scorers at the point guard position.

Chris Paul impacts the game that way as well. And while Paul has never gotten to the conference finals, lets not forget where Kyrie would be today if Lebron didnt go back to CLE. Im not downplaying Kyrie. I think he edges out the top 5 behind Curry, Westbrook, CP3 and Wall. Besides, considering CP3 on that cavs team in place of Kyrie would be scary.

He has another 2-4 years of being elite, or top 3/4 PGs. Maybe Wall surpasses him but CP3 is still an amazing player with talent all around him.

Not sure how exactly we are defining "elite" but I’d say CP3 still is. Holds his own against any PG in the NBA still defensively (eye test), and he is top 5 in the league in Assists while averaging 16.8 ppg. Only 4 other players in the top 10 in dimes average more points than CP3, and one of them is a shooting guard.
