IlladelphParticipantWith all the buzz with Kobe retiring, I’m surprised no one has come out with what many of us are thinking. With Kobe gone, high level guys are gonna want to go to LA again. It’s been known for a while now that Kobe was toxic and an egomaniac who scared off several elite players who were being courtes by the Lakers. All the way back to forcing the Shaq trade to running off Dwight. No one wanted to go to the Lakers and have to deal with Kobe. Now everyone is writing love poems to the guy. He’s been the franchise’s albatross for years now. Kobe retiring is the best thing that could happen tot he Lakers. Just watch next year. Magically they are gonna start signing awesome players again. Addition by subtraction. If I were a Lakers fan I would be ecstatic Kobe finally will be gone.

herceg_bukuParticipantI bet a lot of franchises would love to have a toxic player like that, that will bring them 5 championships in 20 years

IlladelphParticipantLol. Yeah Kobe won all of those championships single-handedly without anyone named Shaq, or Gasol, or a coach named Zen Master. Oh yeah for the past several years he hasn’t been a drag on the team and hasn’t scared off any FAs. Lol, ok.

SkalAndJamalParticipantPlease dont blow up Gasol like that. What has Gasol done without Kobe.

IlladelphParticipantLet me ask you this:
Does Kobe win any of those championships without Shaq, and Gasol? Take those two players away, and do you think Kobe would have won 5 championships? Hmmm?

r377ParticipantFor years on this forum a lot of users keep posting how Lakers will land a big time free agent. It has never happened and still will not happen with kobe going….
Dwight never really wanted to go to LA, have they actually signed anyone more than a 40yo steve nash and Hibbert ?
Why do FA want to go there ? the attention and media of Hollywood ? the history of lakers success ? if that was the case the Celtics would be landing quality FA’s.
Most young pros come out of college, love the money, fame and attention. Then after about 5 years they actually realise they want to win a championship. Lakers are not going to contend anytime soon, I dont’ think any big time FA will sign there no matter how many topics and dreams kids on here have……

IlladelphParticipantActually LA is an amazing destination that a lot of guys would love to go to now that Mamba is out. Comparing LA to Boston is a joke. Boston is a dump compared to LA. showtime is the big stage and all the OKCs and GSWs in the world can never compete with the brand power of the Lakers and the city of LA. If you don’t know, you don’t know.

r377ParticipantI guess I don’t know then ?
In 60+yrs of basketball please tell me all the high end Free Agents that have come to the Lakers ?
Shaq, who else ?
They traded for Gasol and Howard, who then both didn’t want to hang around.
All the hall of famers that played for the Lakers – Kobe, Mikan, Wilt, Kareen, Magic, West, Worthy, Baylor etc 90% of them were drafted by the Lakers, while the other few were acquired in a trade.
Here is an article listing all the top lakers free agent signings since 1980.

So in 60+ years of basketball, the Lakers have only signed Shaq ?

Mr. HookShotParticipantHow many FAs switch places anyway when their contract runs out? Most of them stay where they are, and only if a team has already a solid group of players other guys will join. All in all, the Lakers have a good shot at landing quality FAs if they laid the groundwork for a solid team because of 1) their good organization, which takes care of its (star)players and is willing to spend when needed, 2) the city, as most stars want to be surrounded by the stars from Holywood, and 3) the history of the franchise, which allures to players.

khaled_a_dParticipantYeah,let’s make Kobe the scapegoat for Lakers not being to land all the gr8 FA in the last few years
Man ,you are right about the Lakers are interesting destination as gr8 club with gr8 history in amazing city and show etcBut you forget the other factors ,they are a mess team right now ,they are badly coached and badly run too atm .they have no cornerstones .just a bunch of young players who might turn into something or became busts
Those factors right now neglect anything that the Lakers has .players at their primes care about their careers above anything else .
Do you think many players would want to be in Melo situation right now? to be in a crappy team in a big market?!to be mocked by most of the league and not winning much?
That is pretty much could be what going to the Lakers become .it could be a career suicide for many stars .Once the Lakers get back on track and show some improvements ,becoming a team who can at least compete for a play-off spot then many stars will find it appealing again and you could finally land a big name player because of all what you said .many superstars will surely love to be the one who brings the Lakers back .few would want to try doing that starting from the scratch

Ahkasi ClayParticipantIt will be very telling if the Lakers are able to start signing good free agents again.
(Lakers have only signed 1 high end free agent since Shaq Played for them)
