So far, I’d give the edge to Okafor.

If Towns can have a few more big games and get his ppg up to 16, and rebounds to 10, he should take home the award.

All first rookie team is looking like:

    Okafor, Towns, Porzingis, Mudiay, Winslow.

I reckon Towns or Zinga will win ROY. Wroten will come back for Phillie and Okafor’s scoring will decline…..

Rookie of the year shoud be Towns or Porzingis as of now. Their teams are playing some decent basketball almost near .500 winning games. They are more efficient than Okafor and Okafors team has won one game so don’t call him rookie of the year for scoring the most points because he puts up more shots on a historically bad team. Its not all about points and rebounds

Okafor had been actively terrible. No defense, poor rebounding, bad percentages, and a ton of turnovers.

Why does everyone on here NEG someone for being making an honest assessment of a player that happens to be negative. Pulse is right Okafor has been pretty bad especially on defense. His offensive game is ok, but needs work.  He’ll need some work in the off season but its all going to depend on how motivated he is and whether he can stay healthy. The potential is cerainly there, but his play has been lackluster at times this year.

I like Okafor’s potential and I think he can be good down the line, but I just straight up don’t see an argument that he’s good right now.  I was hoping someone would present that argument so we could discuss it, and instead I got negged a bunch.

welcome to my world, where it’s looked down to think Okafor is overrated and Kawhi Leonard is underrated cause of what I see in the games, and not what everyone can see with stats.

Porzingis is already the most valuable/best rookie, and looks like he’s starting to hit his stride.

Porzingis and Towns are both starting PFs for teams with identical records, playing identical minutes with almost identical stats, but Porzingis’ defense is a cut above Towns, and it’s glaringly obvious in the advanced stats.

Porzingis +/- is +2.9 per game, while Towns’ is -.7 per game, despite playing the exact same role on the exact same level team.

Porzingis is just much longer and no less agile defensively, and is much more able to swarm PGs-Cs on switches and in help defense, not to mention man to man vs PFs and Cs.

    For me

KAT is the most impressive so far

Okafor will win ROY (love his footwork)

Porzingis is the most intriguing. (How good can he be?)

(And because the Lakers fans need a moral victory after the game today.)

Russell is not as bad as everybody first thought.

needs to change.  This is like watching an 80s basketball team, but one of the youngest group of talent in the NBA, its like an oxymoron, these kids don’t know how to play like that so its like putting a square through a circle.  Their team is getting more exposed as the year goes on.  Clarkson and Randle, you can add Ben Simmons they still aren’t winning with that core.

Russell so far is what we knew:  some of his passing is brilliant, he always puts the ball in the right spot on a pass, great passer, great vision, solid shot.  That dunk surprised me.

He is just limited athletically, looks like a lost cause on defense, his legs look like they belong on my sister.  So as good as his skill is, even when he tries to play aggressive and take over a game, I don’t think he can because he’s so limited athletically.  He is 6’5”???  He needs to find some fast twitch muscles.

I know the MVP award often comes down to wins.  Less so with ROY.  BUT, I think winning helps.  So, I think KAT is in first right now, with Porzingas basically in second place.  Okafor is in third place.  Okafor has the scoring stats, but is average in rebounds compared to the other 2.

Okafor can help his cause by leading the Sixers to more wins.

Could we establish a floor this season of how many wins it takes to get a ROY?  Like 20?  Should ANY rookie get a ROY trophy with a team winning FEWER than 20 games?

Porzingas and Towns are in better shape to win the award, AND I think each guy has a shot at being an All Star this season.

Why CAN’T Porzingas be an All-Star?  The East has Drummond and Whiteside and even Bosh and those bigs should be locks (probably Kevin Love too), but the East isn’t as deep (talent wise) as the West, and if a Knick gets an All Star spot I can see it going to Kristaps, since Carmelo is competing with LeBron and Paul George for the small forward slots.

Towns might need to pick it up more, hope for an injury to one of the aging bigs like Dirk or Duncan, hope that Marc reverts to his post-contract year hangover, and keep Andrew Wiggins from taking the T Wolves ASG vote.  But he still has a shot.

I would think though that the T Wolves need to be higher up in the playoff picture.  Then hope that neither a Jazz or Grizzly makes a good enough case for the ASG.

But if you have to look at UPSIDE POTENTIAL for the rest of the year, I think you gotta go with Porzingas.  He looks like a guy who can go for 20, 10, and 3 blocks over an entire month, while helping the Knicks put together a string of nice winning streaks.

Towns slows down for jsut a little while Porzingis looks  to just getting started.. I would be suprised to see him avg 17/10/2.5 by the ASW

The five rookie of the year contenders:

    Mudiay

    Winslow

    Porzingis

    Towns

    Okafor

    their strenghts and weaknesses

Porzingis perform great some games and bad other games

Winslow isn´t doing great on offense but he is excellent on defense

Towns is always consistent but never perform outstanding

Mudiay some games is great and other games he just does turnovers and takes bad shots

Okafor has great stats but doesn´t play well sometimes and his team sucks

Porzingis never has bad games, you just don’t watch his defense and assume it isn’t elite. And then you just look at the box scores of his "bad" games. Except even then you don’t look at his +/- for that game.

Defense is half the game, but most people here think it’s about 5% of the game, an afterthought at best to be used only in a tie breaker.
