Not gonna hit the panic button just yet but I feel like the wizards are stagnant as a team and not making any progress, if anything going backwards. Think it times for change. Thoughts?

Randy Whittman may have taken them as far as he can as the head coach. If one of the assistants look like they can do a better job then it’s worth considering. If no assistant is promising then firing him in the off season may be the best choice. Personally I’d give him a little bit more time, but I’ve never been impressed with him as a coach.

He got rid of contracts and messes that he created. He’s the one that signed Andray Blatche and amnesty wavied him. Wiz gave Gil that huge contract and ended up having to flip it for rashard Lewis’ terrible contract. He’s the one that drafted javale McGee(2008), Nick young(2007), traded 2009 pick for role players Mike Miller and Randy foye, Jan vesely(2011) and has absolutely nothing to show for any of those picks/trades. The only things I can give him credit for is putting solid vets around his young stars but I can’t give him props for digging himself into a hole but ends up saving his job because the Wizards made the playoffs.

The Wizards are only a few wins outside a play off place, I don’t think they press the panic button yet. There may be a case that Randy Wittman has taken the team as far as he can and might be better suited as a coach developing a young lottery team if he did move on.

But he has been with the team for over 6 years and so a lot of the roster have played most of their basketball with him as Assistant or Head Coach, so a new face may change a lot of things players are used to.

Ernie Grunfield has been with the Wizards since 2003 so knows the front office inside out and has certainly put this roster together and cleared out the previous mistakes he’d made to build a good team around John Wall. He is the President of Basketball Operations so any decision to remove him would have to come from the owners.

Ernie is a vastly experinced Front Office guy who I think is an asset to the Wizards and they’d miss his input greatly. Maybe he looks to hire a younger GM to work alongside himself and the vastly experienced Tommy Sheppard to freshen things up a bit. The Pacers hired Kevin Pritchard to work alongside Larry Bird and Donnie Walsh for example.

If making the playoffs and losing in the second round every year is the goal, then, yes, keep Grunfield and Whitman.  If you want to make something of Wall’s career and move beyond that? They need to go.
