saladdaysParticipantJust saw some of Gay’s highlights from a couple nights ago (36 pts against the Bucks). What prevents him from being elite? He’s a great scorer with a nice jumper and elite athleticism. Seems like he has the physical tools to do it, but why isn’t he one of the best defensive/offensive players in the league?

losnopesosParticipantIQ keeps him from being elite.

KingslayerParticipantGay has always been a tantalizing talent, and it’s nice to see him playing his best basketball in Sacramento after struggling so much with Toronto. However he’s never been able to maximize that talent due to some limitations, and his playing style. Even from watching those 36 point highlights, you can see how reliant he is on his mid-range jumper. The vast majority of his attempts that game came from mid-range jumpers. They looked nice during a game where he was lights-out hot with the jumper, but it’s a very inefficient shot. He’s been one of the best mid-range shooters in the leage this season, but is still only shooting 46.2 % on shots that aren’t taken at the rim or from the 3 pt line. His overall efficiency has improved in Sacramento (53.7 TS% this season), but it’s still far from that of an elite scorer. A big thing holding him back as a scorer is his handle. He has never been an advanced ball-handler, and struggles to get all the way to the rim to score, despite his physical gifts (also why he’s so reliant on the mid-range game). He’s also a bit of a ball-stopper, favoring isolation ball and not being the best creator for his teammates.

NBAjunkie81Participantthat has so much natural talent he can get by w/o working very hard…. But when you get to the pro level…. that’s doesn’t work if a guy wants to be a star…. So what you are left with is a sensational performance once in awhile……. but you are always left wanting more b/c he’s not capable of consistency…… B/c he’s just not a guy that has Kobe or Lebron’s tireless work ethic off the court…..

RUDEBOY_Participant1 of my favorite players.and 1 of the good guys in the nba.i’ve met him several times.
rudy’s a versatile player, rbs, block shots, hits mid range j,occassionally make 3s.if he can average at least 25 pts a gm on a consistent basis.it’ll help put him in all star consideration.
he’s a more efficient player now than his memphis days. he’s shooting over 50% in his last 10 gms.but he’s a poor defender and as mentioned above he lacks the iq of elite players.i think thats why he’ll never be in the class of a lebron or pippen.

tuck243ParticipantHe’s also a poor finisher around the basket which leads to him settling for a lot of long 2’s… Plus he’s a guy since UConn that you forget is on the court for long stretches (Wiggins was like this at Kansas). He has all the tools to be great too… His form on his jumper is what you dream about having as a basketball player.

SportsNinjaParticipant1/13, 2 points, 4 rebounds, 27 minutes. When the jumper isn’t failing he has no alternate way to help. Elite players find a way to help win when their bread and butter is toast.
