Wes Washpun

I’ve actually been on washpun as an NBA prospect bandwagon for awhile now although I’m not sure how crowded that bandwagon is. He caught my eye early last season. I doubt he gets drafted but I could see him being one of those guys who latches on with a team after a few years overseas or in the d-league. Love his competitiveness and ability to pressure the ball defensively. Still needs to work on his decision making and outside shooting though to play at the next level.

 It’s one thing to do that against Berry and Britt who have struggled in their young careers guarding penetration.  I wish Roy would have taken his head out of his ass and put Theo Pinson by far our best perimeter defender on him, but he did not check him once.  

Still a great player though!

 Washpurn made Joel Berry look ridiculous.  Being a Carolina fan it kills me to watch a team play in a hostile environment and show little to no fight or intensity.  They had a 16 point lead at the beginning of the first half and then Northern Iowa began shredding them apart.  This team is not young and has played in hostile arenas before.  They should not have been wide-eyed in this type of environment.  Northern Iowa played a hell of a game.  Kennedy and Brice should be absolutely unstoppable down low but they don’t have the "there is nothing you can do to stop me attitude"  Hansbrough had.  Without Paige, they still shouldve won easily.  I would go so far as to say Carolina has been soft for the past half decade.

Sure, they have some nice pieces.  Big MEN who can pound down low, and solid wings who can defend well.  But ultimately, Paige is the driver who makes this engine go.

As a lifelong UNI fan I would love to see Wes in the NBA, but there is almost no shot of it happening. Although he is an extremely explosive athlete, the rest of his game is simply not quite there. He often goes on long spurts where he gets out of control and is careless with the ball. If you pay close attention to the UNC game you can see how painfully dependent he is with his left hand. Any time he takes it to the rim one on one he is going left. In the NBA where Wes’s athleticism would be neutralized with other athleticism and length and players key on his weaknesses more often, he would really struggle to make an impact. I’d love to see him in the NBA, but he simply is not a complete enough player.
