    Actualy 2 Questions……

    1. Is there anyone on this site ( besides me) who thinks you can make the case for another player to be called the greatest ever?

    2. If MJ never played b-ball..who would be the greatest ever?

I personally think Wilt Chamberlain was the best player ever. 100 points in one game is hard and he was dominant.

Wilt is widely considered the best ever. O or Magic would fight for the top guard spot.

A case can always be made that MJ is not the greatest (personally i dont think he is)

1.) Russel won more titles (as a player and coach)
2.) Wilt changed half the rules and led the league in scoring, rebounding, and assists in seperate seasons, and averaged 50 some odd points one season and nearly 30 rebounds just some obsurd numbers
3.) Oscar averaged a TRIPLE DOUBLE for a season
4.) Kareem scored more points than anyone in history
5.) Magic changed the way we look at point gaurds and integrated in flash and uptempo play into the NBA
6.) Pete Maravich bridged the gap from the old to modern game with his handle and passing ability, plus he averaged 44 points a game in college (no one talks about him cause he was cursed by being on bad teams)
7.) Bird was arguably the smartest player ever and one of the games feircest competetors and helped bring basketball ack into the mainframe of american society

so yes MJ is widely regarded as the greatest basketball player to ever live, but the is an argument to be made, and to answer your question Wilt would be considered the greatest (and should be ahead of Michael) if it had not been for MJ (and should be ahead of Michael)

I think Jordan should be considered the greatest. Kobe and Lebron are the only other two i would put in the discussion. Guys from back in the day like Oscar, Wilt, and Russell were great for their respective era, but I doubt they would do much today. Also, because it was a diferent game back then I don’t think the stats and championships meant quite as much.

I would’nt put Magic over Jordan because Magic was terrible on defense and was’nt a very good shooter either. He was arguably the greatest with a full head of steam, but in half court sets, he would have to turn his back to his opponent and back it up the court.

You are right that it was a different style of game, but so too do I think those truly great players would have adjusted today. Part of the reasons their highlights aren’t as impressive is because of the different rules. For example: it was considered unsportsmanlike to do a flashy dunk or break a backboard during a game, which Wilt could have done who knows how often.

I won’t even go into the other guys physical abilities, but imagine someone who is 7 foot 2, has a verticle of reportedly 54 inches (younger days) and could bench press over 500 pounds multiple times (even when he was 50!). I think someone like that would do very well, which is why I think Wilt may have done even better today than in that era. Oh, and he led the league in assists one year, just to show he could.

1)I don’t think you can really compare players from different eras. MJ is currently the best player of the modern area, but is looks like things are changing towards more of a point guard centered offense, so a new era may be coming soon. You could definitely put Robertson, Magic, Kareem, Moses Malone, and Wilt up there, but they all kinda played different styles in different types of the NBA.

Would Wilt have scored 100 if there was a center like Howard or Ben Wallace (4 years ago) guarding him?

Would Magic have won as many rings if he didn’t have Kareem and Worthy on his team?

How would Oscar’s stats have been if the 3 point shot was always around?

Would Malone still lead in career offensive rebounds if the 3 hadn’t been introduced?

Would Kareem have carried both Kobe, D-Wade, and possibly now LeBron to championships?

Its just like the argument with saying Jim Brown is the best football player ever, if he played today he’d get killed!

    2) I’d say even with MJ playing, Magic is the best ever based solely on his dominance and his ability to play all 5 positions. There will never be another point guard who has the ability to win a championship as a center like Magic did his first year in the league.

There were a lot more shots going up when he was in his prime so his stats were a little misleading. He had a season where he avereged 39.5 shots per game. He avereged 23 rebounds per game for his career. There was one season where he played 49 minutes per game. It was just a different era back then. If I remember correctly, he took like 63 shots and 32 ft’s in the game where he scored 100. That stuff is crazy to even try and imagine someone doing that today.

I’m gonna call bs on that one. I don’t think anyone who has ever played the game had a 54 inch vertical, let alone a 7 footer.

I don’t blame you. Its ridiculous. Especially when 6 foot 6/7 guys like MJ and Vince topped out at 45. But the more I read and heard about the Wilt’s abilities, the more it sounds like he may have been the most unreal athlete to ever play sports. When he was with the Globetrotters supposedly he would dunk while cradling the ball in his armpit. Footage from the 60’s? Not that I know of. The reason you can’t cross the line with your feet when taking a freethrow is because Wilt would take off within that little circle and dunk it every time. Basketball might never have evolved like it did if they didn’t change the rules around him.

Oh, and the highest vert I’ve ever heard of was 60 inches for American high jumper Franklin Jacobs and a Cuban volleyball player whose name I can’t remember.

MJ is the greatest all time because of his ridiculous resume and his WILL TO WIN…. Jordan could have played in ANY ERA and dominated… He was the BEST defensive (2.35 steals and dominant on ball defense in the 4th quarter) and offensive (30 ppg 5 asst 6 rebs on 49 percent shooting) wing player EVER….. I dont think the Bulls would have won 6 championships with Wilt, Larry Magic, Oscar or any of those players mention…….

If sportscenter was around when Wilt played he would easily be the best ever whether MJ played or not. They say Wilt was taller and more athletic version of Dwight Howard, two things about Chamberlain 1.Chamberlain was a world class athlete who did track and field in college even won a high jump competition 2.Chamberlain led the nba in assist with 8.6 ,if you do not believe the athleticism look it up,about 15 years after he retired the Nets offered him a contract to play, teams wouldn’t ever offer MJ a contract now let alone 15 years after he retired, like I said if you don’t believe me look it up

absolutely the Wilt’s and Oscar’s would have adjusted to todays NBA game so i think its unfair to say who is the greatest player EVER i think it is mor fair to say who is the best player of their ERA

anyways IMO LeBron will end up being the best player EVER

Considering Wilt played in less than 2000 games in his career, and I doubt you are joking, that is hilarious. Also, please make your case for David Thompson being the best SF in NBA history. This I would also love to hear.

No love for Kareem? NBA’s all-time leading scorer, Multiple titles, and 5 MVP’s put up crazy numbers early in his career who cares if he didn’t have a 60 inch vert and could bench 1000 pounds 70 times when he was 80. Kareem is right up there with Wilt, Magic, Oscar, and Russell

Now a days with no hand checking, and the game being more catered to offensive player Wilt may have put up better numbers, they also say when he played he was too nice of a guy he was know for holding back not playing to full ability

Go over NBA seasons and look at who should have won MVP. I did so, and I believe that if the award wasn’t ridiculous and media controlled, as well as having that Oscar’s career achievement make-up award feeling, Michael Jordan would have won 9 MVP’s. That is 4 more than the next closest two players in this system (Kareem and Wilt) and it was just ridiculous how dominant he was over his time. Honestly, you need to look it up to see how great he really was, because I doubt that is happening here. Go to basketball reference, look at MVP seasons, see for yourself. Michael Jordan was incredible, and while you could make an argument for Bill Russell who has won 3 more championships than anyone to have ever played, it is hard to say that certain players surpass Michael. I certainly do not see Knicksboy having an honest argument for Oscar, other than the monumental importance of the triple double (Oscar, by the way, might not have even won MVP in that season if it wasn’t ridiculous, as Wilt averaged 50.4, Elgin Baylor was huge and Bill Russell actually won the award. I would still take 50.4 and 27.2 over Oscar’s triple double year easily as the greatest single season. Please someone argue against that, I would love it.)

the discussion would be better fitted if you talked about players each decade, because the game seems to have a tendacy to change each or around each decade or so.

Had 6 MVP’s. Check facts people, lol. Honestly, I know it is a message board, but I have heard Knicksboy say he wants to write for ESPN. Well, than maybe he doesn’t have to check his facts:) And, while Kareem was amazing, I do not argue for him over Mike.

I for one, would be up for you making a case about anything, as your sentence posts never tend to sway me. Also, it can not include “MJ never averaged a triple double in a season.” Because, honestly, while it is fantastic that Oscar did so, who cares? Triple doubles are a really overrated statistic honestly, they are little less than cool and it is slightly impressive, but MJ averaging 33.5, 8 and 8 is just as impressive in his time. I mean, Oscar was way ahead of his time, but would he have averaged a triple double in 1990? I doubt it brother man.

Kareem was one of the best ever, while Wilt played 13 years Kareem played almost 20 years if Wilt played that long as Kareem he would still have tons of record, plus Wilt changed the game for real rules were changed so Wilt couldn’t dominate as easily, but didn’t help much, plus when Wilt played the block shot wasn’t even a stat along with a few other things that I can’t remember right now
