It seems like to every bball fan believes it’s insanity that some players dont have a hook shot. But I was just wondering, if it was such an amazing move and so easy, why is Kareem really the only player to really just be unstoppable with it? I find it hard to believe every player since KAJ would avoid something that can really benefit their game if it was that great. I get this feeling because Kareem was 7’2 and long like a giraffe, that hook shot really worked for him but to say it’s the most unstoppable move, I think we need more of a sample size of guys who made it work for them.

Not just a hook shot. A skyhook.

And I’ve never really seen anyone else do it.

It probably doesnt really work unless youre that tall.

And how many 7’2" have that kinda touch.

Yao Mings turnaround Jumper was borderline unstoppable too.

If you can consistently make it and you are the size of the Empire State Building, yeah, you can make it.  BUT, if you brick all your sky hooks, then it is LITERALLY the worst shot in basketball.

It might just be Kareem’s shot.  The shot that worked for him, but not necessarily everyone else.  Like George Gervin’s finger roll, or Dirk’s jumper off one leg.

That’s the thing, it isn’t easy. I actually just had this same talk with a friend yesterday. You have to remember the skyhook, or any move for that matter, is a skill. Skills require time and patience to get proficient at, let alone master at a professional level.  I think saying "o well… why dont you just learn the skyhook" is the same as saying go learn steph currys shot and you’ll be fine. Certain skills fit players better and some just never master those skills. Kareem found a shot that worked for his size and strength the same way Steph Curry does now and the same way Jordan did with his fadeaway later on in his career.

Have you ever really tried hook shots yourself? You might make one here & there, and even with extensive practice it’s almost impossible to master. It’s a trick shot more than a legit shot, and if you start throwing up hook shots in games your coach will probably pull you out.

I’m surprised there aren’t more turn around shots like Dirks, that’s virtually impossible to block and is a much more stable shot than a hook. Regardless Dirk & Kareem are both legends, and those shots are one of the main reasons why they’re special and stand out above the rest.
