llperezdidnt know much about this guy when i heard the lakers signed him to a non gauranteed deal this summer. But I knew the lakers needed a true pg on the roster to come off the bench if both deangelo and clarkson were going to start becasue that would only leave lou williams as a ball handler off the bench so I figured this guy might be able to help. To begin preseason he didnt play due to a hamstring issue so i wasnt even sure if this guy was going to make the team. Well he has played these last 2 games and man has he been impressive. He is in complete control of the game while he is out there and he has been throwing highlight reel type passes all over the court.
So far in 2 games: 31 minutes..12 pts…5/11 fg….14assists…2turnovers
that assist amount in limited action without turning the ball over is impressive. More importantly he allows the second unit guys of nick young, lou williams, brandon bass etc.. to just focus on finishing and not having to dominate the ball and create all their own offense. This guy isnt just going to make the team but i see a solid 20 or more minutes per game from him.

OhCanada-ParticipantHe’s been one of the best PGs playing outside of the NBA for the last couple of years at Real Madrid. This is no real surprise. Should fit in perfectly as a backup PG with room to grow.

lakreParticipantHe’s been playing for FC Barcelona, not Real Madrid.

NBAjunkie81Participantbasketball is about movement W/O the ball & a really good PG is like the Conductor of an orchestra… like a coach on the floor, it is a thinking man’s position & Russell should be able to learn a lot from the clever European Vet…

CDPHParticipantYep, I wrote about him on my blog (www.deepishthoughts.com), great under the radar move for the Lakers to provide a stable backup point guard off the bench. He won’t put up huge numbers, but he’s the kind of guy who helps a team.

King CaluchaParticipantI always thought he was a brazilian Nash. Of course, he’s way past his prime and while he had never been a great scorer, he can distribute the ball at a very high level.

llperezStyle wise he looks a lot like Nash. Those runners off of one foot and the way he plays is very similar. Saying a guy plays stylistically like someone else doesn’t mean your saying he is as good.

Kwame33ParticipantHe’s just saying style wise. You can play like someone and not necessarily be as dominant as them. Hence the phrase : "he’s a poor man’s________(insert name)".

MopgrassParticipantHe makes all the difference in the 2nd unit. If they have Ryan Kelly in the lineup (though Bass is better) they move the ball really well, even with Swaggy in the lineup. It also opens up some high % 3’s. They work better together than the 1st unit (though unit 1 is more talented).

barbabodomParticipantHe´s a master in the P&R game. Such a shame he moved to NBA past his prime, although he will still able to contribute for a few more years

Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantI like his game a lot and he seems like the type of player who would just be enjoyable to play with. This should save them from having to use Lou Williams as a back up pg, which is never a good idea. Really smart and crafty player who looks to distribute first, which should mesh nicely with a second unit with so many shoot-first type of players.
