valentineI watched the Pistons-Pacers last night, and it’s clear that Stanley Johnson is going to be a very good player from day one of his NBA career. Probably already a top 50 player.
He’s very much in the James Harden mold, and his shot is just as fluid and soft as Harden’s. Johnson will get to the ft line at will and will knock down a very high % of his shots.
I suspect Stanley will very much remain the primary ball handler for Detroit all season, much like Harden.
I also suspect Detroit will underperform as usual, which means Johnson is going to get maximum shots and stats. He might average 19-20 ppg as a rookie, with the full support of the coach and city.
I don’t play fantasy sports, but you should think of Stanley as perhaps more valuable than even DWade, and perhaps even better than many all stars.
He could be a top 20-25 player by the end of the year, or sooner.
I think the "lower ceiling" talk before the draft was erroneous. In part because he’s a very underrated shooter, and in part because his i.q./instincts/intangibles are off the charts, along with his strength and shooting stroke.

ZouldiersParticipantRight now, he’s a low-upside guy. If he starts more for Detroit, then yeah maybe but right now he is only suited for deeper leagues and plus they have Reggie Jackson and Drummond so I’m not sure if he gets more touches.

Robb_CParticipantLow upside? This kid is a defensive nightmare that alone will keep him on the floor..

ZouldiersParticipantIn fantasy leagues, yes. Of course, this kid has high upside but he’s not someone i’ll take in the early rounds of fantasy leagues.

T RexJohnson’s upside is perennial mvp candidate. He already looks like an all star.

trelos6ParticipantBefore the CBB season started, Johnson was a STUD and Winslow was the 3rd wheel for Duke.
After the final 4, Winslow was touted as a top 5 pick, and Johnson, despite having a great year, was being talked about in the top 10.
After the draft, people were mocking Detroit, saying they should’ve taken Winslow.
After summer league, Johnson was all the rage, Winslow played OK, but Stanley was out of this world!
Who knows what the season ahead holds. If Deng or Wade gets hurt, Winslow has a chance to shine.
At this stage, Johnson looks like he will get the starting SF spot, or at least 6th man role.
Should be an exciting season ahead!

T RexJohnson is like a stronger Winslow with an amazing jump shot.
Winslow is probably up to 230 now, and his athletic advantage over Johnson is gone.
It’s always important not to overreact to tournament runs, and East Coast/ACC/Duke exposure advantage.
All the talk about how the top 6 prospects were obvious, and how Russell, Winslow, and Mudiay were three of those 6, was always bs.

MopgrassParticipantJohnson has always been near the top of my list (ahead of Winslow and even Hezonja). However, his jump shot is not great by any means. He’s been making shots the way Kendall Marshall does: awkwardly. If he doesn’t change his form, he won’t improve.
I didn’t catch the game or the Pistons’ summer league, but I watched most Arizona games. He shoots a bullet from his forehead. Luckily, he has aim, but he’ll need to rebuild his mechanics.
Point being: yes to everything except him having a great shot.

T RexHe’s been working like crazy on his jump shot all summer, and it’s not a line drive anymore.
Justin Anderson is another underrated shooter. Most guys with that build shoot like Winslow.

holefillers1ParticipantAgreed, he would have to be Joe Johnson with defense to be a top 50 player. Its amazing how much spacing and pace of play can dictate a players transition to the NBA.

T RexI can’t wait for the Pistons to play the Rockets, and watch Johnson take on Harden. Marcus Smart played Harden pretty well for a rookie, but now Johnson is the new kid on the blocks.
