valentineJimmy Butler was in a contract year last year and just got paid. Tensions with DRose appear high. DRose has all kinds of distractions including serious legal problems, he’s already focused on free agency two years away, is at least a little bitter that Butler is the man now dog.
Pau Gasol had tons to prove last year after leaving LA, but being yet another year older, and without Thibs yelling in his ear, his defense might regress along with the rest of his game. Long summer with Spanish team, and one eye on Olympics next year.
Mirotic might get exposed more defensively without Thibs, and with most of this Bulls front court aging rapidly.
Noah’s game slid significantly last year, in part because of injury, but his offense also nosedived, especially his little mid range jumper from what I understand. Same thing happened to David Lee’s jumper last year. When you start losing your legs, your shot goes too.
That team basically played at peak performance under Thibs, and his firing might have been as much about the older Bulls being close to washed up, and blaming Thibs for their decline.
Rose doesn’t strike me as a leader period, but especially not one who is going to lift his teammates up in hard times.
Mike Dunleavy is 35 and might be more like Mike Miller was last year for the Cavs. Just too old to really make a difference.
Aaron Brooks is a turnstyle, Hinrich is 34 now, and even Rose isn’t a great defender. With the frontcourt getting older and slower, how much can the bigs continue to cover up the defense of the point guards.
Jimmy Butler is looking to take on more of an offensive role, and that’s going to affect his defense a bit, especially after signing a contract and without Thibs.
New rookie coach, new offense, a little too old, and a little too much time together.
The Bulls could significantly underperform this year and nobody would be surprised come Feb.
And nobody will recall calling me ridiculous for predicting it.

SandThats a worst case scenario…I’ll provide a juxtaposition.
Pau Gasol uses his fundamentals to extend his career Tim Duncan Style
The new coach brings enthusiasm and a winning game style
D Rose is fit, and returns to his All NBA level.
Mirotic improved as a versatile 4.
Butler maintains his top 5 wing player status.
Noah plays an Andrew Bogut role as a high screener/rim protector
The East remains terrible
The Bulls waltz their way to 58 wins and everyone loves having D Rose back.
Scenario A or Scenario B?

Reptilian MonkParticipantSimple answer would be yes, I think they were overrated last year. Butler and Gasol played well but Noah played terrible and Rose is not what he use to be.

PulseGlazerParticipantThey’ll be a top 4 seed in the East, probably, but hard to see them getting further than the Conference Finals. They have a lot of good pieces, but a lot of good pieces that don’t really fit, like Rose and Butler now both wanting the ball, Gasol a mediocre fit with Noah, and so on. Again, the East, and a full year together, should fix some of those ills, but I do not see a finals contender here.
