valentineI realise that everyone’s Big Board today will look nothing like pre-draft, but Skal is the only prospect who is on Ben Simmons level.
That must mean he’s a damn good prospect, since most people who watch Simmons believe he ranges from a ‘Can’t Miss’ pro to MVP Candidate.
I went through DX’s strengths and weaknesses vids (awesome)…and whilst I see a solid big man, I wouldn’t put him on a higher level than recent high lottery bigs.
In fact, If I had to choose between Embiid, Nerlens, Skal, Kat and Okafor….I think he’s last in that crew…
So tell me if hes really that good? For example, where does he rank in that group of bigs I mentioned.
Is he really a #1 pick contender ahead of Simmons?

Robb_CParticipantIm actually with you on this, Ive been saying this since his jr year.. Ive never really been sold on Skal as a great NBA prospect.. Hes going to be great in college due to the fact he’s extremely skilled and has great size, I just see him as a tad bit overrated as an NBA prospect. He will be good not great, hes nowhere near the prospect Simmons is and just lacks the strength and size to bang with 4s and 5s, I see him being a better version of Channing Frye honestly

Memphisboy14ParticipantHe’s made huge strides on his strength over the past year. Also he’s 6’11 or 7ft with a 7’2 wingspan. He has pretty good size for a post player even if his arms aren’t that long.

EspressoParticipantIf I had to choose between Embiid, Nerlens, Skal, Kat and Okafor…….. I take Skal last.
He’s just not very special in my honest opinion…. for stretches in the game he dissapears.
He’s not super athletic, on par with KAT, if that.
He can dribble the ball up and down and makes some decent passes. He can shoot the 15 footer if they leave him open. He will block a shot if the opportunity presents itself. He will get rebounds that are coming his way. He doesnt do that with fire, doesn’t "wow" me, and doesnt do it in high rates.
I’m having a hard time finding the "big gap" between Skal, and someone like Henry Ellenson. Not to mention Dragan Bender can go above him.
It’s absurd to have Skal over Simmons, as I have expressed before. And I have even decided to put Jaylen Brown at #2, which I haven’t seen many mocks do, if any.

Memphisboy14ParticipantI don’t think it’s fair to include Embiid in this conversation as we don’t know if he’ll still be the same player we saw before he was hit with all of those foot and back injuries that will prevent him from playing baskeball at a professional level for at least 2 years. Also we have a bigger sample size to judge the other guys you mentioned in comparison to Skal. After giving it some thought I guess I’d take those other guys before Skal since we haven’t even seen him play a college game yet. I will admit though I’m extremely high on him. I think he’ll have a better chance to show off his game than KAT did at Kentucky since the school doesn’t have any other big man prospects and won’t have to deal with the platoon system that KAT dealt with that kind of hindered his game.

EspressoParticipantMaybe is fault for not clarifying and being unrealistic, but I’m talking about the healthy Embiid we saw at Kansas. Matter fact, I would take that Embiid over everyone up until Anthony Davis.

MopgrassParticipantI agree with your list of centers. Right now, I say…
1) Ben Simmons 2/3) Jaylen Brown or Brandon Ingram 4) Skai.
I’m definitely willing to change every pick after they start playing this year. However, I told people on here that Embiid and Karl Towns would be picked 1st before their college careers begin and I didn’t change my mind (I really thought Embiid would’ve gone 1st). I was way off on some other stuff though.
I don’t know about Skai’s ceiling, but he already looks serviceable as an NBA PF today. I don’t think he’s even a possible threat to Simmons. If Brown or Ingram play amazingly, they’d have a shot.

Memphisboy14ParticipantSo you would take a perpetually injured Embiid over Skal Labissiere. I’ll give Skal this he has a better chance of playing a NBA game before Embiid does. Of the other guys you mentioned I will say that he doesn’t have the long arms of the guys you mentioned. He doesn’t have the huge body or strength that Okafor has. And he doesn’t have the defensive potential of Nerlens or KAT. But, I think of all of the those guys he probably has the most offensive potential. He can take his man off the dribble with his face up game. He has very good form on his jump shot with a super high release. Skal has the rare ability for a big man to create his own offense. He has good athletcism with a very good frame on his body that he’s improved at an extremely fast rate. I remember vividly around this time last year he was skinny as hell. Now if you look at him he’s still on the slender side but he looks way stronger than he was before. He’s got a nice amount of tone in his arms and they’ve gotten bigger. Obviously this is something he’ll need to improve on though.
Now on the defensive end he has very good fundamentals. He’s pretty good at avoiding fouls also. Granted his wingspan isn’t the biggest at 7’2 but, a 7’2 wingspan is still just that. He has the agility to get around the court quickly. He’s taller than most PF’s (the position he’s projected to play at) and once he gets stronger which is happening at a rapid rate he’ll also be able to guard the C position for a bit. Granted I don’t think he’s gonna be an elite level shot blocker and that’s fine because with his physical ability he can still at least alter shots.
In my opinion he projects to be LaMarcus Aldridge with more defensive potential or a Chris Bosh player. In my opinion as a 2-way player he’s got more potential than Nerlens Noel who will be a defensive juggernaut but offensively will probably never be good. Okafor I think there are questions about how well his old-school game will translate to the NBA. KAT while he will be a good player there are questions about the strides he will take offensively also. Embiid……. hell we don’t know if he will ever play an NBA game. Skal’s game is tailor made for the NBA. Especially when you see how they want big men to versatile more than ever now the fact that he projects to be able to guard both frontcourt positions and is able to score outisde of the paint out to the 3 point line. He also has an improving post game. Combine those things with all of the physical gifts he has and you have a guy with a pretty huge ceiling. He needs to play in college first before we see how good he really is I will concede that. But on a Kentucky team that won’t have nearly as many big men as they’ve had in the past. He will be the premier player on that team.
So to answer your question yes he is that good. He just hasn’t been hyped up like Cousins, KAT, Davis, WCS, or Nerlens.

moochieeParticipantYes he’s that good IMO. He’s got the prototypical size that you’re looking for in an elite NBA power forward. Huge potential as a midrange shooter (More so than everybody else on your list), as well as an ability to play back to the basket. Maybe not the elite defensive potential as some of the others on the list, but he has all the tools to be a very good defender at his position. Athletically, he’s a lot smoother than KAT and more explosive than Okafor. I haven’t seen enough of him playing at a high level so it remains to be seen if he will put it all together, but based on potential he might be at the top of that list for me (minus Embiid because of the injuries)

Bankroll PJParticipantA lot of Skal’s hype is attached to progression KAT made with Calipari last season. Very few believed in Towns as a possible #1 draft pick before the season started because he had an inconsistent motor, loved shooting jumpers much more than playing inside, and appeared uninterested in defense. With Calipari, KAT improved on every aspect of his game and I think Skal can do the same. I see Skal as a starter and borderline all star for a decade in the league.

HitsterParticipantI haven’t seen a lot of this guy being based in England and highlight reels can be edited to show what you want. From what I’ve read about this guy across respected reviewers, he seems a very skilled big man prospect, who has the sort of shooting range that NBA coaches love in the new breed of bigs.
He is supposed to be a well grounded, coachable guy and will probably be the main man on a powerhouse NCAA team under a Coach with an excellent record of getting guys drafted very high. So the future looks very bright for Skal, the real test will probably come this time next year when he’ll hopefully be a few weeks away from making his NBA debut.
I see him being a legit top 3 pick and likely the first legit big to be drafted. I don’t think he’s up there with Ben Simmons yet but making a case for anyone else to go ahead of him at this moment is quite hard. I could see Brown, Murray and Ingram all being legit top 3 contenders and having the ability to go top 5 but unless someone took a flyer on them or think they have seen something in someone like Dragan Bender, I cannot put them ahead of Skal at this moment.
But as always it’s only my opinion and there is usually someone who emerges as a high pick who isn’t on the radar at this moment.

SkalAndJamalParticipantI would say he’s the best big man prospect since Davis.
Reasons that not all those other guys have is
1. He just started playing basketball in high school and has not really been coached. And this dude still showed out in the hoop summit, jordan brand classic, and Ballislife game. Calipari is also the big man guru, just look at his track record.
2. He’s coachable, incredible work ethic, and has already shown that he’s making improvements in his all-around game and body, and he’s done that quickly.
3. Maybe he’s not the longest or strongest, but make no mistake, his game both offensively and defensively will be able to handle the speed and length that NBA will bring. This guy stays playing above the rim, quick sharp release, incredible touch, and the footwork is pretty good cause he played soccer his whole life and that will only get better.
Expect some 20-10-5 games in college.

GBeeParticipantHe’s not that great and I wouldn’t rate him ahead of Simmons. Long-term I think Dragan Bender has more potential and I could see a guy like Ivan Rabb being a better pro down the line too. He’s got soft touch on his jumper and he’s pretty agile for a big (quick leaper), which means he has decent scoring potential and good defensive potential as far as being a big who can defend in space and contest shots. Besides that, his physical profile isn’t that impressive. His length is nothing special, pretty average for a PF. He has a natually slender build with narrow shoulders. Although agile, his explosiveness is eh. His offensive moves aren’t that quick, neither is his first step. I don’t expect him to be a back to the basket threat so as a face up big does he have the blow by/driving ability to provide a counter to his jump shot? I don’t know. I think he’d have to become an exceptional shooter for a big for him to be a 20+ point scorer
