high floorParticipantI just finished watching these highlights this afternoon, and am I crazy to think that Payton is just a jumpshot away from being a star player??
Only 4 players in history have posted back-to-back triple doubles in their career (Antoine Walker, David Robinson, Jason Kidd, Magic Johnson). I know this is not a great litmus test, but it has to mean something. That’s great company.
If you watch him play, he has excellent court vision & he just seems like he’ll have a knack for making winning plays. Will he develop a jumpshot? That’s very much debatable.. but he wouldn’t be the first 20 year old rookie to learn how to shoot as he gains his NBA footing. Can’t wait to see how he improves this season.

dcaseParticipantMore than four players have posted back-to back triple doubles in their career. For example Westbrook had a triple-double in 4 consecutive games this past season. This was the longest streak since 1989, when Jordan had a triple-double in 7 straight games. A more glaring ommision would be the Big O. He averaged a triple double in the 1961-62 season…..so I am pretty sure he had several back to back triple double games.

high floorParticipantMy mistake. Oscar Robertson averaged a triple double over an entire season… lol. So I’m sure many players have had back to back triple-doubs. Meant to type Rookies instead of players

dcaseParticipantTo follow up on the point above….there have been way more than 4 people to have back-to-back triple doubles in their career. Here is the list of players (some of them multiple times) that have accomplished this feat over the past 30 years…..Chris Paul, Rondo, Kidd, Barkley, Igudala, Jordan, Kobe, Grant Hill, Lebron, Magic, Bird, Weber, David Robinson, Walker, and Dikembe. All these were elite players, but there are others that aren’t even close to stars that have done it….Bobby Sura, Fat Lever, Aaron McKie, Anthony Mason, Shawn Bradley.
So as you can see the feat isn’t as exclusive as only having 5 members. Time will tell where Elfrid Payton falls on this list….with the stars or mixed in with the ‘others’ that have accomplished back to back triple doubles.
Oh yeah…..the longest streak of consecutive double doubles is 9 by Wilt. Don’t see that record being broken anytime soon.

Reptilian MonkParticipantI agree Elfrid would look like a star with his crazy hair and a stylish jumpsuit. Hollywood star in the making.

Magic JordanParticipantThank you for this. I was going to jump on it but you already have it covered.

adumParticipantHahaha T Rex you are too real.
I can’t wait to see how different this team will be with Skiles at the helm. I can see Elfrid being a star regardless of his shot but don’t get me wrong having a jumper is the sexiest thing you can have these days in the lg.

ExumInfernoParticipantIt’s a big game, all the players come on the court, most have the regular uniforms, Elfrid Payton has the yellow jumpsuit with the black stripe like Bruce Lee, not only does Payton’s team win but he becomes the biggest name in the sport.
He really can do a lot on the court, and you are right with the idea of him being a superstar if he could shoot. I am sure he is practicing a lot, and I read that he has a shooting coach, and in college he was a bit better on free throws than as a rookie in the NBA, so he can improve.
If he can get to 45% from the field, 33% on 3s, 65% on free throws, Payton will be a lot more dangerous on offense. Someday he might average 15 points, 11 assists, 6 rebounds, 2.5 steals, and as the Magic get more shooters on the team he will get more assists and have an easier time getting to the basket.

Robb_CParticipantHe’s going to get coached well under Scott Skiles, I see him making a couple of All-star games as a very solid contributor to his teams rotation ala Joakim Noah, Luol Deng, Kyle Korver. He’s going to be a really good guard due to how long he is and his want to be good on the defensive end

T RexI’m not even sure Payton should be starting on that Orlando team. Not having a jump shot is a much bigger deal than it used to be when illegal defense was called.
If getting a triple double once in a while was so important, Evan Turner and Rajon Rondo would be all stars.
Big freaking deal. Guy who can’t shoot passes the ball every time, manages to get 10 assists, and manages to get 10 or 11 points.
Did his team win the game? Does that even matter?
It’s all about how cool he looks in a jump suit, and how cool he looks when he’s not missing the backboard on his free throws.
The ability to shoot means the ability for your team to play 5 on 5 rather than 4 on 5.
Teams would gladly give up a triple double to one guy if it means they don’t even have to guard him, and can double team anybody else who gets the ball.
But with Oladipo at PG, the Magic could play 5 on 5, and in the 4th quarter the other team can’t just play hack a jump suit and watch Elfrid self-destruct at the FT line.
Oladipo, Hezonja, Tobias, Aaron Gordon, Vucivic. That’s four good ball handlers and passers, and all four can create their own shot from anywhere, including outside of two feet, unlike Payton.
If Vucivic had better range on his jump shot that would be one thing, but he doesn’t, and Vucivic’s double doubles are nearly as empty as an Elfrid Payton triple double.

oogellsParticipantWeird coming from you, Rajon Rondo was a 4 time all start and world champion. Other then that, good points T Rex. Vicivic double doubles are very empty indeed.
