It’s probably going to be a tall guy, taller than LeBron’s 6’8".

LeBron’s story isn’t over, and he may very well go down as the GOAT.

But even if he does, who has a chance of toppling the King?

    Anthony Davis

Steph Curry? If the rings start adding up.

    Giannis

    Porzingis

    Myles Turner

Marcus Smart (positional value works against him a bit)

    Ben Simmons

    Skal

Who am I missing, who has at least a small chance?

I could even see Jusuf Nurkic taking over like a shorter, more skilled Shaq.

The ultimate basketball player would be a 7 foot tall, dominant rim protector with a good/great 3 point shot, passing and dribbling skills.

Davis, Giannis and Porzingis have the raw tools. The raw tools to be. To be the Greatest of All Time.

    Time.

    To be.

Porzingis lacks the agility and explosiveness of the other two, but he is just about the longest player in NBA history, and GOATs often possess a freak measurement or three as well as dominant game.

Myles Turner lacks the ball handling and passing ability to join the conversation, and his awkward gait probably has on-court ramifications that were not present during Summer League 2015, Summer of Myles and Porzingis.

Ben Simmons isn’t 7 foot like you and eye picture the next point center GOAT, but he is 6’10", and he has GOAT point skills that we would be looking for in our next GOAT.

His GOAT to move is the same as Magic Johnson and LeBron, coast to coast transition domination.

Simmons still doesn’t have the 3 point shot that the GOAT of our dreams would probably have, but at least he has a small chance of us eventually singing "GOAT Tell it on a Mountain"

Really T-Rex.. …Marcus Smart.. Marcus freak in Smart.. smh.. I mean we’re all aware of your feelings toward Smart and Myles Turner but c’mon bro.. Anthony Davis is or will be the best player by the end of the season. Ben Simmons is the truth and if Skal puts on decent weight, look out.. .. But let’s not kid ourselves.. the next GOAT is just that.. NEXT… As in, the next player to be annointed the second coming; for it to become abundantly clear.. There is only one GOAT.. .. you may know him as the current owner of the Charlotte Hornets…

      frequent goat traits (FGT’s):

      Elite physical tools

      Elite work ethic

      Elite leadership

      Elite clutch play

      Elite defense

      Elite offensive and defensive versatility

      Point guard skills

Elite ability to draw fouls and score around the basket

At least good 3 point ability

Smart has all the intangibles a GOAT could ask for, including a certain level of craziness/a-hole-ness

The only areas he comes up short are:

Positional value – being able to play PG, SG, and some SF is great, but not as great as playing center at a goat level.

Explosiveness – I still insist that Smart’s superior strength helps make him an overall elite athelete, but from the more specific athletic category of explosiveness, Smart doesn’t scream GOAT. But now that he has a healthy ankle, we’re going to see the same aggressive rim attacking that helped him dominate college basketball on both ends of the court. Also, dominating college basketball on both sides of the court is a sign of possible goatness.

Smart can answer his explosiveness questions with his crazy-high bbiq and reaction speed. Rather than just blow by guys, Smart will often have to set them up first, like Paul Pierce had to. And at SG, Smart has an absolutely elite strength/quickness combo. Some explosions are slower and more powerful than quick, weak explosions.

Think about a .177 bullet vs a shotgun slug. The .177 bullet is was faster than the slug. Does that mean it’s more explosive? Just look at the target downrange for your answer.

Another area of current weakness for Smart is his inbetween game. He shot very low efficiency from 2 last season, and he will really need to improve his scoring efficiency to avoid platauing at Russell Westbrook level of goatness.

Did I miss any glaring weaknesses?

Marcus Smart?  GOAT?  Seriously that is retarded.

T-Rex, you really do not know this game at all if you are suggesting that Marcus Smart could ever be considered the greatest basketball player of all time.

IMO, the GOAT is MJ and always will be.  How any of the guys on your list could even begin to approach his airness is beyond me.  But Marcus Smart?  Dude.  No.  I have just lost any respect for you that I might have ever had.

All Smart would need is LeBron’s medicine cabinet.

Jordan was probably a juicer himself.

Smart is already a defensively dominant player. He’s already as good as Kawhi, and more versatile.

You take a 12 year All Defense Team guy like Smart, who perennially will get DPOY consideration/votes, and then you add in offense.

Say, career averages of 23 ppg, 6 rebounds, 7 assists, 2.5 steals, .9 blocks, and ridiculously high number of offensive fouls drawn. He was tied for second in the league as a rookie in offensive fouls drawn. You combine those forced turnovers with steals, and Smart was already forcing turnovers at a higher rate than Leonard, all while playing with a severe ankle sprain. Nobody blamed Ricky Rubio when he shut his ankle down for the season, but Smart as a rookie not only toughed out his ankle, he literally forced turnovers at a higher rate than the DPOY.

Not to mention making more 3s than Kobe or Michael were able to match in their first 5 years. Smart already shoots 3s like Kobe and better than MJ.

Smart is as physically dominant against PGs and most SGs as Shaq was against centers.

Smart has already shown a very rare ability to draw offensive fouls. And in college he got to the line as well as James Harden.

If you can’t at least see that Smart has clear Scottie Pippen level potential, I don’t know what to tell you.

But Smart can be a lot more than Scottie as a scorer and as a 3 point shooter.

      Joe Dumars is his basement.

Jordan was my hero but I’ll admit that he had the league pissing in his pocket and was on the juice.

The 80 and early 90s in pro sports were rife with PEDs…and Jordan is the kinda guy that wants any competitive advantage.

Still the Goat since all his competition were on PEDS too..or at least had the choice.

He was on the juice so much he got an endorsement deal to sell juice from Gatorade.

Poor Barry Bonds, paying the full price while Jordan gets worshipped.

It’s not like David Sternburgler was going to bust Jordan for roids. Jordan was as teflon as Donald Sterling.

Jordan was super-photogenic/handsome, and "star fouls" were invented by Stern for Michael Jordan, the first player-brand.

Star fouls not only boosted Jordan’s points and wins, but they also put a handsome brand at the FT line for his TV close-ups. Jordan was like Michael Jackson level famous, and everybody benefitted from pretending their star was as bright as possible. Just like with Mark McGuire, Sosa, and Bonds and Clemons.

Porzingas has an intriguing skill set plus he is tall and really long.  Being a Knick should help him get plenty of publicity.

Regarding Ben Simmons, give me a 6’10 athletic playmaker and I will be ahead of the game.  Hope he does really well.

To pass Jordan, guys are going to need a TON of luck.  MJ has SIX titles.  TWO 3peats and ten scoring titles.  Plus he played on the iconic Dream Team.

So, a guy needs to not only put up dominant stats, he also needs to WIN.

Still time for LeBron to be the GOAT.  He has two rings and has been to 5 straight Finals.  I think if he can pull off a 3peat with Cleveland, then 5 rings and 9 Finals overall would put him at the TOP — and, stylistically, I prefer Michael Jordan’s game.

The Cavs brought in DJ Stephens.  Hopefully the uber freak can make the team.  I think he could give the Cavs the athletic X factor that they need.  I really do.  He can soar, board, block shots, and defend.

Steph, to me, is going to get that Pure Scorer/Crazy Range GOAT award from Pete Maravich when all is said and done.  Steph even has the passing and fancy dribbling.  The Warriors look like a dynasty in the making.  Winning might not be everything, but it is everything else.

Will be someone that is a wing in the 6’7 to 6’9 range that is a freak athlete. Inline with Lebrons muscle definition and size. Has a sweet 3 point shot. The league has changed since MJ. He didn’t need the 3 then. But now teams are going to it more and more. If he can destroy people in the lane and then hit 3 pointers like Steph it would be a wrap. This guy isn’t in the leauge yet. Lebron is the right here and now top player.

He will have to be an in incredibile defender as well. The rest would fall in place if he has the talent and drive.

Also MJ is GOAT I don’t see anyone ever having a better career. Someone might get close ala Lebron right now. But people will still go with MJ.

It sounds like you’re describing a taller Kelly Oubre, with better intangibles.

     I agree markfitz.

Big, athletic wings are the most fun guys to watch — and the most deadly.

I think Magic was the best ever but then Jordan passed him by.

Magic’s overall record still holds up.  You could even say that Jordan was the BEST ever, while Magic was the GREATEST ever — all-around play, flair, winning, creativity, charisma, and personality.  A guy who redifined a position, defined an era, and help launch a golden era for the NBA.

It’s hard to quantify who will be the next GOAT.  I guess we will know it when we see it.

Still, different guys have different records:

Wilt: Most points in a game and in a season.

    Kareem: Most career points

    Bill Russell: Most titles

Michael Jordan: most scoring titles and highest overall scoring percentage

John Stockton: Career record for assists AND steals.

LeBron: 5 straight Finals while with two different teams.

Oscar Robertson: averaged a triple double for an entire season.

Then you have Magic who had the assist record before Stockton passed him.  Kobe had the 81 point game.

I guess the next GOAT will be a combination of all these guys.  Most guys on these lists above were TWO WAY players except for maybe Magic.

My prediction: The next guy to get a 4peat will be the next GOAT.

Michael Jordan appeared in six NBA Finals.. his team won every series.. he never left doubt as he never played in a Game 7.. Jordan and the Bulls beat surefire title teams(Knicks, Sonics, Suns, Pavers, Jazz) en route to 2 three-peats.. … oh, and he won MVP of each and every one of ’em.. … ladies, gentleman, fellow forum posters, I give you, Michael Jeffrey Jordan… simply.. … The G.O.A.T.

There have been several cases of baseball players taking performance enhancing drugs, but I’ve never seen any substanstial information that MJ ever took anything similar. The guy was the top NBA player for over a decade if you take out the first retirement stint. He went to an Olympics, World Championships, 6 NBA finals and over that time as the biggest name in the sport he must have been drug tested randomly several times.

A lot of the baseball sluggers took PED to give them extra bulk and strength whilst MJ retained a similar build throughout his career and still looks in good shape today.

We know he liked to live life in the fast lane sometimes but he always had a good public image and has not wasted his fortune like others have.
