Only watched a few games this year (early on at that).  He seemed extremely tired throughout the games I’ve watched and looked as if he wasn’t in shape for the NBA game.   I forgot all about him (honestly I did) and recently played MyCareer w/ him talking to me.   That prompted me to check his stats (for the record no rookie in 2015 wowed me) and they’re terrible *Chuck’s Voice*.

Thoughts on Exum?  Did he improve later on in the year?  Was he still out of shape?  Do you think he’s more than likely a bust?  Was he drafted too high?  Was college a better destination?

I dont think any 19 year olds should be in the NBA.

    Assured bad stats.

Hard to judge him based on his rookie season. Even though he played a decent amount of mins, he was given very little offensive responsibility and was rarely the primary playmaker on offense. It was clear early on that he wasn’t really ready for the NBA game so the jazz found ways to get him game experience without really just throwing him into the fire.

I’m not sure yet if he is a pure pg or if he is better suited to play off the ball. He definitely has elite defensive potential for the pg position with his combination of length and quickness. Outside shooting, finishing at the rim and making plays off the dribble are all areas he needs to improve on to be effective at the pg position though. I was actually interested to watch his development this year and see how he would respond to a presumably bigger offensive role. Sadly, that will have to wait now.

He was very underwheliming his rookie year. Usually rookie PGs tend to make the most immidiate impact compared to other postions because (Lillard, Wall, Rose, Irving are some recent ones), because they have the ball in their hand and impact the game most. Exum showed no skills of creating offense not only for himself but for others (which is the main job of a PG). I dont think Jazz’s starting PG of the future is on their roster and I see Exum as having same career path as Antonio Daniels

All Rookies you mention were starters from the get-go, being the focal point of the offense of their respective teams. Exum on the other hand was not even a starter for the most part of the year, and only sparsely dictated the game for the Jazz. That doesn’t mean he didn’t had an underwelming reason, but it is the main reason for the difference compared to the other rookie PGs you mention.
Sticking to Excum, I think he will be fine as long as the Jazz give him time to develop. He should put some more time in developing his outside shot, and he should be pushed during practice and preseason in order to get used to the high pace of the NBA’s game. He is a smart player though, with excellent athletic ability, just lacks to experience needed to succeed last year.

He didnt start in the beginning of the season because he couldnt beat out Trey Burke. He became a starter once Burke got hurt. And he was chosen really high, you expect Exum to be a focal point. And all the strengths you mentioned are on point, except he cant create offense, lacks good vision and isnt assertive enough to ever be an all star PG. The Jazz should have been an 8th seed team had they even had a decent starting PG. Exum played way below average and I didnt see anything from that shows hope, escially court vision

Exum was one of only a few rookies to post a positive +/-, and the Jazz success did ramp up when he was getting minutes, so while he’s not responsible for all of that team success while he was on the court, I’m not going to doubt that he was doing some things right and facillitating winning basketball.

him getting injured is going to set him back. You cant blame Utah for drafting him though, ish happens.

Worst case now – Shaun Livingston?  I know that sounds bad, but Livingston is a very valuable role player.

About him being out of shape,  while watching one of the summer league games the announcers were pointing out the fact that he is a ‘mouth breather.’ Meaning that for some reasons he only breathes out of his mouth, and not at all through his nose while playing. This actually makes him look more tired than he actually is because it always looks like hes sucking wind.
