sitlbitoParticipantFor basketball junkies,it’s that time of the year where the NBA is still far away, but somehow basketball is slowly coming back with FIBA competition, and today marks the start of the best continental FIBA tournament:Eurobasket. It should be a competitive one wth France defending their title on their home soil led by 6 NBA players, and Spain,Serbia,Greece,Lithuania and Croatia to take the crown away from them.
12 games today, with the highlights being Spain-Serbia at noon eastern time(I guess). The other notable games today would be Italy-Turkey and Croatia-Slovenia at 3 pm eastern.

BornaskulParticipantItaly has a lot of firepower with Bargnani, Gallo and Bellineli even Datome and Gentile , but it still remains to be seen how will they perform as a team .
Lithuania is missing a few players(Kleiza, Motiejunas..) but is always dangerous , It will be interesting to see how many minutes Domantas Sabonis will get and how will he play.

sitlbitoParticipantI’m not in the US but I’ve heard some games will be on ESPN3.
First 4 games are over: No title contender played except maybe Germany who had a hard time beating Iceland, which is not a good sign for them, with all due respect to Iceland. Czech Republic was impressive against Estonia,Poland defeated Bosnia in a close one but were leading all game, and the Netherlands, after leading by 12,then being down by 5,came up with the win over Georgia.
Again Spain-Serbia at noon eastern.

herceg_bukuParticipantSerbia vs Spain highlight of the day. Two very good TEAMS, a lot fo team basketball and some very good individual stars as well. Excited for this game, even though Spain is favorite due to the fact they are sort of loaded, Serbia has proved they are a very good team, hopefully the game will be intresting.

sitlbitoParticipantSerbia beats Spain 80-70,whata game. Bjelica led the way with 24 points to go along with 10 rebounds and 4 assists(it’s ok to be excited Wolves fans). A terrific game of runs ,a19-2 run by Spain who had a 10 pint lead in the second until Serbia came back to tied it before the half. A sergio Llull jumper gave Spain a 36-34 lead at the half, then the game was extremely close until Serbia pulled away late with clutch threes from Nemanja Bjelica and Bogdan Bogdanovic.
In the other 3 games,Greece took care of Montenegro like they should 85-65,Israel surprisingly defeated Russia 76-73 with 21 points by Casspi, and Latvia in a terrific atmosphere in Riga got the better of Belgium 78-67.
Still 4 games to go,France-Finland,Croatia-Slovenia,Italy-Turkey and Lithuania-Ukraine.

herceg_bukuParticipantI have to say Serbia is the team to beat. They are very tough and talented, they have enough fire power and defensively are lock down defenders as proven today. What a game by Bjelica, ready to contribute in the NBA right away.
Gasol had some nice moves, but the rest of the team just got shut down by Serbias defense. Im sure Spain will pick it up. This tournament is great, i look forward to watching Turkey, Croatia, Slovenia and France. A lot fo quality teams and talent.

sitlbitoParticipantAlbeit France needed overtime to beat Finland, they’re still at home(and I’m french so maybe I’m just a homer),so they are the team to beat for that particular reasons AND they’re the defending champs. Spain got shut down as you said, but their usual strength is becoming their absolute weakness:the depth. What a decrease in talent when some members of the starting five are resting.

herceg_bukuParticipanti had not seen the France game but i am surprised it went into OT. France has a quality team they will do just fine. Like u said with Spain their depth was the key before, but the problem has become the fact they dont incorprate any new talent, dont develop them along side Llull or Gasols. They rely too much on their past and the players that are in decline of their careers.
Teams must always develop youngsters and give them fair chances! Or your team will go through a tranistion of a 3-5 years of struggle to find the pieces again like serbia did between 2005-2011 ish

McDunkini expect big things from Koponen. I honestly believe he comes into this as one of the top pgs in the tournament. He destroyed a (out of game shape) Tony Parker a few weeks ago in a friendly and I think he is entering/in the prime of his career.
Umm….please don’t let Euroballer see this but I like Greece.

sitlbitoParticipantFrance needed overtime to beat Finland, what a fantastic effort by Finland,to me they’re the second best team in this group. Parker had 23 points and 5 assists,De Colo had 17. I’m not worried for France, they had a 16 point lead, maybe got a bit comfortable and didn’t see Finland coming back. 97-87 final score. Turkey edged out Italy 89-87 after leading by more than 15(22 by Erden, newest Piston Ilyasova had 17,while Gallinari led all scorers with…33 points),Croatia hang on and beat Slovenia 80-73(Simon had 20,Hezonja 13 for Croatia,Zoran Dragic led all slovenian with 14). Lithuania defeated a surprising Ukraine team 69-68.
