valentineThroughout NBA history, there have been 25-30 NBA relocations (depending on your definition). That averages about one in every 2-3 years.
Recently, the Nets moved to Brooklyn, which wasn’t too far….and Seattle got straight blind-sided by the OKC group in one of David Stern’s lowest moments.
Recently, we have many "close calls". Sacramento and Milwaukee were/are on thin ice, yet managed to secure irresponsible stadium deals their city’s can barely afford to keep the team in town. If New Orleans didn’t win the Anthony Davis sweepstakes (hmmm), there’s no way they’d still have a team after Hurricane Katrina.
I think we are majorly overdue for a relocation…unless the league expands. Everyone knows Seattle would bring in higher revenue than many of the smaller markets in the league. Some of the bigger metropolitan areas with rabid fan-bases could probably even support a second team.
So who do you predict will be the next team to relocate? Remember…every 2-3 years average people……
Bucks? Hawks? Pistons? You tell me!

he_gets_bucketsParticipantThere won’t be any for a while. It’s too hard to move teams in a market like this, the few teams that were on likely to move have sorted it out, if the Bucks arena deal goes through then I could see them maybe moving, but apart from that, I think it will be a long time before we see another relocation.

There been reports that the NBA wants to put an entire division oversees in Europe. And there also were reports that if the NBA relocate or expand in the United States/Canada the team will be located in Louiville, Kansas City, Las Vegas, and/or Seattle.

Rip255You guys seem awfully sure about that…
But the question asks for the next team to relocate…
Your answer suggests no team will EVER relocate. Or the absurd notion that a Euro Division will be BEFORE a single relocation.
Either you’re naive or scared of negs.
These Billionaires are all about the green…theyll follow the money.

ChicagoCaseyParticipantIt just being resonable. Mostly all the teams getting new arenas and most logic will say that the NBA won’t relocate Detroit and the NBA said Atlanta will not relocate. The only hope of a team to relocate is if Milwaukee don’t build their stadium on time (highly unlikely).
So let’s some NBA teams and let me explain why they won’t relocate anytime soon by using fact and/or logic
- Lakers – They play in LA. They have one of the most iconic areneas in the world
- Clippers – Look up
- Kings – They are building a new stadium
- Golden State – They are also building a new arena
- Suns – There been rumors the last couple of days about a new Suns arena
The list goes on about those explanation. The league will expand before they relocare and the only way the NBA relocate in the near future is if Milwaukee does not build their stadium on time.

Rip255Sounds like Milwaukee is your answer.
Going to be tough for the fans. Imagine Jabari Parker and Greek Freak in Las Vegas.
You could sell tickets to home games for a fortune with all the tourists and high rollers.
Franchise value would double overnight.

whiteflashParticipantNO ONE is relocating to Las Vegas, at least not in the forseeable future. Seattle needs another team asap, ’cause Stern straight up fucked them and continued to fuck ’em til the day he retired.

wonzi_bellsParticipantIf you’re question was that we have to choose a team, I don’t see why anyone wouldn’t say Milwaukee. The NBA can literally buyback the team.
It’d be sad though, the team that moves to Seattle would inherit the old Sonics history, thus killing whatever franchise past history that moves there. So, no more Bucks history, no 1971 championship banner and no retired jerseys.

Memphis MadnessParticipantA European division sounds pretty dumb.
Travel would be a pain. Also don’t think the league could absorb more than 1 or 2 new NBA teams.
I WOULD like to see an NBA Europe minor league/major league. Do a 12 team league and pay guys as much as possible. You have a ton of high level college talent going over to Europe now. This way they can play in an NBA affiliated league. It would be a step up from the D League.
If I were to expand the League I would add Seattle and either San Jose or Kansas City. Either way, both teams would go West, then I would send the Memphis Grizzlies and New Orleans Pelicans to the East.
Make sure Seattle winds up in Portland’s division.
If San Jose is the other expansion team then you have a California Division with the Lakers, Clips, Kings, Warriors, and San Jose.
Or, you get Kansas City in the Southwest division with the Texas teams. Probably Phoenix moves there too.

wonzi_bellsParticipantI don’t think you know how close San Jose is to San Francisco and Oakland. I mean, it’s already enough that they got Sacramento having a team near the Bay Area but three-teams in NoCal is a bit much.

ropeParticipantI’ve always thought what the NBA should do is form an NBA Europe, possibly by plucking off some of the big market teams in Europe. Eventually this league and the US based NBA could play for a truer World Championship. Keeping them separate in the regular season eliminates a lot of the travel, tax, hassle that comes with send teams back and forth across the ocean all the time.

Memphis MadnessParticipantNBA Europe would be great. Not sure how a title match would work out.
I kind of like having the NBA champs be the champs.
you could start off the NBA preseason with the NBA champs vs. the NBA Europe champs at Madison Square Garden or something like that.
At the NBA All Star game you could have the D League All Stars take on the NBA Europe All Stars.

DolanCareParticipantThere’s too much money in the league for a relocation to happen. That whole business with the previous Sacramento owners is a thing of the past. There’s just too many billionaires who would like to own a cash cow that is an NBA franchise. Too bad for many American cities, these arena deals usually rob the treasury.

Rip255The money is why a relocation will happen.
If you havent noticed…the Nets just moved to Brooklyn. The Warriors are moving to San Fransisco…and the Kings were hanging by the smallest of threads.
Teams have moved throughout NBA history…yet now theyre going to stop?
The NBA has been rich as hell for decades…theyre not suddenly rich when they were once poor.
When the next Franchise is up for sale…the offer will be 1.2b from Seattle…or 600m from Atlanta. Which one would you take?

Memphis MadnessParticipantI think The Cavs could move if the post-LeBron hangover gets ugly once he retires/trades himself, etc.
Especially if LeBron can’t get them a title.
Seattle, San Jose, and Las Vegas would be better places for an NBA team. Maybe even Kansas City or Columbus, Ohio.
There might not be a major cross-country relocation for a while, but I can see the Cavs relocating to Columbus, Ohio.
Other similar moves would be the Memphis Grizzlies to Nashville although I think the Grizzlies are the number one team in the city, and Nashville already has two major league teams (NFL and NHL).
The Kings will be a political football for the NBA. Threatening moves to San Jose, Seattle, or Las Vegas will be a reoccuring theme.
My sleeper cross-country relocation pick? The Orlando Magic to Las Vegas.

HitsterParticipantAs an English guy, having a team or division based in Europe sounds great but it will never happen, the travelling logistics for teams would be impossible given the amount of games played.
The Kings are getting a new arena so it looks like they stay put.
The Bucks likewise have new owners, former owner Herb Kohl made a hefty donation towards the new arena and with a potentially strong team going forward, the Bucks future looks much healthier.
I agree that Seattle needs a team back in the city and if one other expansion could happen then a 32 team league could be a legitimate proposition with the mega new TV deal in place.
No other immediate relocations spring to mind honestly. You can rule out a large number of the mega market teams, then teams whose circumstances have improved. After that you are virtually trying to pluck a name out of the hat or find some reason to move a team.

Rip255Money is the only reason teams relocate.
Do you think LA or NY could support a 3rd team? All 4 franchises in those cities are making BUCKETLOADS of money.
What about a 2nd yeam in Chicago or San Francisco. Cant even get a season ticket to Bulls or Warriors unless someone dies.
Tickets to Charlotte games can be had for $15
