Solid bigman who has had a decent, if unspectacular, career. He hasn’t played since being traded from the Wizards to the Suns due to injury. And I mean hasn’t played in any league.  Not in the NBA, China, Europe, D-league, etc. He hasn’t formally retired so I assume he still feels like he can play, so does anyone know what has kept teams from signing him? Yes he’s been injury-prone…but so do a lot of other guys who are signed to teams. He is, by all accounts,a solid veteran presence in the locker room and can still provide quality 15 mins/game. If Kendrick Perkins is still able to latch onto teams, I can’t see how Emeka can’t.

Can anyone give an answer to why he’s unsigned? Any team that might be able to have a role for him? Is he planning to play in other countries? Is he overweight (I heard he eats A LOT)?

I always thought he was criminally underrated, his problem was he was never on the right team for his skill set. He averaged 15 & 10 as a rookie but had a bad ankle injury in his second season which I believe he lost a step from. But he was also a great defensive player too averaging near 2 blocks per game, if he could’ve played to his strengths on a better team I think he would’ve been remembered a lot differently. That being said, if he’s healthy I would love for him to come back and play for a contender.

Did research about a year ago on him because i wondered the same thing. Conclusion: he had serious disc problems in his back which caused pain throughout the body. Not sure if he had healed from it fully yet, i truly hope he did, because he was a smart and nice guy.Hope to see him hoop again somewhere and I wish him all the best.

I heard about this story a couple months ago on ESPN. Actually its a herniated disc in his neck currently keeping him out, well he had surgery, & its healing, he is just waiting until he is healthy enough to make his comeback. The back injury happened in college, not sure if it lingered into the nba & he had some ankle issues prior to this neck injury in the nba, but it is his neck 100% now. Still he is makin a road to full recovery, hopefully, & actually teams like my mavs, the cavs & heat were all interested & following his recovery right before the 2015 free agency hurricane got into full swing. He is just waiting until he is completely ready his career, I don’t think is over, & as you can see quality teams still want him.

The story is actually on ESPN to read. You can type "emeka okafor come back from injury" into your search engine & the story should pop up.

I absolutely loved Emeka Okafor at UCONN. I remember him singlehandedly dominating Duke’s frontline in UCONN’s come from behind victory over Duke in the 2004 final four. It seems as though injuries have finally derailed his basketball career. It’s unfortunate because he was such a good college player and had a decent NBA career when he was healthy. The great thing about Emeka is that he is a smart, high character guy. He had a 3.8 GPA majoring in finance in Connecticut and I heard about him doing a lot of volunteering off the court. This is a guy who had a back-up plan for his career after the NBA which is awesome to see. He’s only 32 and I think he has a lot of options for what he will go during his post-basketball career since he is such a smart guy. Good luck to him.

I remember in 2004 draft debate, Okafor or Howard. Pro ready or Raw talent. Coming into the league Okafor was compared to Alonzo Mourning and Patrick Ewing in terms of coming out of college with more advance defensive skills than offensive skills.

i know he’s distantly related to jahlil okafor, wonder if they are close and if he will help in the young bigmans development. also, i remember back in the 2004 draft, there was actually a decent amount of talk about who should go first, okafor or howard. im sure most of it was pure hype so it didnt seem like so much of a one horse race, but shows just how much promise and potential he had coming into the league. hope he comes back to contribute somewhere.
