This thread is designed to encourage participation. I have intentionally left some teams blank, so feel free to insert comments.

Atlanta Hawks – Danny Ferry wasn’t too complimentary of the fan base at Atlanta. His comments led to his resignation, but I’ll leave it up to you to decide whether you agree or disagree.

Boston Celtics – What a great fan base. Have an "Us against the world" mentality. Wills their team to win. Boston community is a key reason why they keep fighting back to prominance, any way they can.

Brooklyn: Best arena, but least engaged fans in the league in my opinion. Not every New Jersey fan followed them to Brooklyn, and the whole Jay-Z hype thing makes them seem gimmicky. Him and the Russian owner don’t know jack about basketball, and fans know it.

Charlotte: Hard to hate on the fans. With the Original hornets leaving town, lack of success and quality of NCAA teams in the region, I’ll give them credit for sticking with it.

Chicago: Great fans both locally and world-wide. Know good basketball, and the city has become iconic in global basketball community.

Cleveland: Would have burned Lebron James on a stake if given the chance, yet welcomed him back with their collective lips firmly pressed against his…. No respect for them.

Dallas: Fans create a great atmosphere. Mark Cuban knows how to entertain them, and love talking trash against Texas Rivals.

    Denver:

Detroit: Barbarians. Disgraceful behaviour in Malace at the Palace. Think the sport should still be played like it was in Bill Lambeers era.

Golden State: As reliable as an Abacus…these guys turn up and make noise regardless of how the team is performing. In the running for best fans in the league. Always appreciate good offense…

    Houston:

    Indiana:

LA Clippers: The fact that the team wanted to silence Clipper Darrell has left the fans bitter. And half the people watching in the arena are opposition fans or nuetrals who can’t get Lakers tickets. Poor fan base who survive on big-market factor alone.

LA Lakers: Biggest fan base, including Oldschool and Newschool fans. But are jaded and indifferent at the moment. They’ve been humbled, and they’re now like scared pussy cats. A Sleeping giant though.

Memphis: Possibly the most overweight fanbase, but a better alternative than the Vancouver Grizzlies. The wholesome basketball community is responsible for keeping Marc Gasol there and Zach Randolph outta trouble.

Miami: Fans don’t get to their seats until quarter time. Idolise D-Wade, and treated the King like a Mercenary and never made him feel welcome.

    Milwaukee:

Minnesota: Possibly the worst run franchise in the NBA since their inception, so remarkable they still have a team. Thank Kevin Garnett, and good fans for that. Respect.

New Orleans: Deserve some success after the city nearly lost the team after Katrina. But the fans stayed loyal and are now packing out the arena. Deserved a franchise star.

New York: Most cynical fanbase, and outspokenly critical. This isn’t a bad thing, but every New York fan thinks he’s smarter than the coach and management. Hipocritical too, cos they were hypped about Amare Stoudamire and changed their tune,

    OKC:

Orlando: Definitely the fan-base who has had their hearts broken the most by franchise players leaving. Makes them durable, and appreciate loyalty. How else could Jameer Nelson stay in the league despite being horrible.

Philly: Fans don’t show up to watch that rubbish, and I don’t blame them. No-one’s watching on television either.

    Phoenix:

Portland: Regulation fanbase, although too paranoid about injuries for some reason.

Sacramento: Rallied hard to keep the team. That’s what a basketball community is all about. The management has their flaws, but the fans kept basketball in Sacramento.

San Antonio: Luckiest fans in the NBA. Spurs have dominated since even Moms and Pops can remember. Appreciate good basketball and treat their players with respect.

Toronto: Loves to boo ex-players. Canadians in general are quite ruthless at sporting events for some reason. I’ve seen it in Hockey too. I love it.

Utah: Never say a bad thing about the team. Always optimistic. Always loyal. Definitely a basketball city who identifies with the Jazz.

    Washington:

It’s funny I’m from Memphis but I will agree that team does have the most overweight fanbase.

You can actually see the seats are more spaced apart at the arena there. But damn, that Memphis BBQ looks too good to resist.

I bet they serve great food at home games. Need extra napkins for sure.

Being from Indiana, I can tell you the basketball really is like a religion here. I can’t say the state is 100% filled with Pacers fans (what state is completely loyal though?), but Indiana has a large fan base with many knowledgable fans who know how the game should be played and realize that excellence doesn’t happen over night. They appreciate the process of developing the young guys and turning them into local heroes. Larry Bird is about as close to a Messiah as you’ll see when it comes to how Indiana basketball fans view him too.

I’ve hade the opportunity to go to a couple of celtics games in the 2 years the one I went to in 2013( well actually the year was 2014, but you know) stood out. I got stuck behind a group of drunk guys who berated the refs while standing up an entire game. Everyone was surprisingly enthusiastic considering the fact they sucked that year. The game I attended this past year was the same except the team was better this time around and the train ride on the Downeaster took 2 or 3 hours and I missed some of the first quarter. Although I have to say the fight I saw at the McDonald’s in north station between an employee and customer made things interesting. The family member I attended the game with decided we should stay after we purchased our beverages at McDonald’s to see how it played out. There ended up being a fight that was somewhat gut wrenching and somewhat disturbing.

I added that because I’m not sure whether or not the customer attended the game. There was also another incident at a different game where a father with his sons who were attending their first game was knocked by someone thought to be playing the knockout game. I can say as a whole the celtics fan base aside from a couple incidents has remained positive and friendly.

I can agree with this, and think Boston fans are some of the most knowledgable in all of sports, mainly because a lot of historic moments have come from their teams (Boston Sports have gone to 13 World Title games in the past 14 years, and went 9/13 in that span…that is extremely impressive for a sports town). Obviously the fan base has a reason to stay committed, and to be possitive. I also think Boston as a city is fantastic, and adds to the whole effect. I remember my first time going to a Sox game and just feeling the weight of Fenway growing on me as we got closer. It was surreal.

As a Celtics fan though I will say this, the Celtics don’t get NEARLY as much love in Boston as they should. The Celtics are literally last in the pecking order in Boston when it comes to team loyaly, and I doubt any town with 4 major sports in it can say that about their basketball team. Try to walk a minute in Boston without seeing a Red Sox hat, I dear you. Everyone has an awkward loyalty to the Patriots, and the Bruins have more loyalty and sponcership with the local talk shows. Celtics are kind of an afterthought sometimes, and that bothers be :'(
