The battle for Player of the Year will be a battle between Ben Simmons and Kris Dunn, and it is hard for me to pick (albeit great) the Freshman over the returning Senior who is just a complete all around player and fierce competitor. Will most liekly average something along the lines of 20pts 8ast 5rebs 3stls on nearly 50fg%.
I have been a fan of Dunn since his rookie year and to be honest I thought, along with Semaj Christon, would both one and done.
His style of play is similar to that of Rusell Westbrook and dare I say, if he gets a more consistent jumper and learns how to make the simple play when the possibilty is there, drafting him at 8/9 will be even to low for the amount of things this guy brings to the table.
Elite perimeter defender, elite athleticism, elite ball handling, elite shot creating.

     -Returning B12 POY

    – Averaged 17.5 pts and 5.4 rebs on 41% fg

I’m not saying he will win it over Dunn and Simmons, but I wouldn’t be suprised either. He needs to be in the conversation.

I think it’s a little early to call it a 2 man race. There are a lot of players that could play their way into the discussion once the actual games start, some you might not even think of right now.

I like dunns game a lot, especially if he cuts back on his turnovers and improves his outside shot. He sort of reminds me of John wall, albeit not quite the athlete. I definitely think he has a good chance to be drafted in the lottery this year, and could even play his way into that top 6 or 7 discussion with a really strong season.

Head to Head stats between, Yogi and Melo. This data is recorded from 3 games, IU vs Maryland.

    Yogi — 22 PPG, 5 APG, 3 RPG.

    Melo — 15 PPG, 2 RPG, 2 APG.

I also think Nigel Hayes could be a darkhorse canidate

Providence is going to be an 8 ish seed which could hurt Dunn’s chances. I think the you have to include Kyle Wiltjer among the frontrunners. If I were picking today I would pick Wiltjer. He is so overlooked because of his defensive deficiencies, but you really have to appreciate his versatile scoring and shooting ability. Gonzaga is going to put up a crazy W/L record too which will help his chances.

Wow, Kris Dunn will definitely be fun to watch this year.  He will be the showcase talent on an otherwise unremarkable Providence squad.

Dunn has a couple of major limitations: cannot take care of the ball, and cannot finish.  He has a high TO % per 40, and for a point guard wannabe, this is bad.  He also finishes a low percentage of shots in the paint.  For a guy with his strength and athleticism, this is a red flag.  His inability to finish may be due to his rather unfortunate injury history requiring surgeeries to his shoulder, and this may be affecting his desire to bang down low for the finish.  He may be worried about reinjury when driving.  Understandable, but again a red flag.

Injuries have plagued Kris Dunn, and I know that the major draft sites have him as a mid-lottery pick, I suspect he will be picked lower based on injury concerns.

As far as POY?  Sure it is possible but it is wayyyy too early to start talking about that for him.  He is 21 and will be 22 by the time the draft rolls around, but because of injuries his real first year was 2014-15.  It’s not like he is an experience 4 year senior leader kind of guy.  He definitely has first round talent, but he is unproven as a leader and a winner at the collegiate level.  Mostly because of injury, but still…

Ben Simmons on the other hand is way overhyped.  He will have to be way better than the number 2 college player to justify all the hype thus far.  Remember how hyped Andrew Wiggins was, and he basically had an unremarkable year at Kansas.  I bet Simmons has a good year at LSU, but I bet he will disappoint given the stratospheric expectations that he, and all around him, have been building up.

I suspect guys like Kyle Wiltjer, Anthony Gill, Denzel Valentine, Georges Niang, Melo Trimble, etc.. to have a shot at it depending on how well their teams play.

If you actually watch Kris Dunn play the turnovers are not too detrimental because he dominates the game in so many other ways. He also has one or two turnovers a game which are completely avoidable. He does have to improve his finishing, but part of the problem is that Providence needs him to create so much offense that he will force a tough finish in traffic. It hurts his numbers but its a better alternative than a forced shot from someone else.

In terms of his draft stock, I think he is a lock for the lottery and could move into the top 5 depending on who needs a PG
