I was going to post a Timberwolves offseason recap/review, but didn’t really feel it was necessary becuase it’s not like they made any brilliant or bold moves. Basically, Flip and staff did what they should have done, didn’t overthink decisions, and put the team in a great position moving forward.

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about what the rotation is going to look like. The position that reallly intrigues me is PF. With KG, Bjelica, Bennett, and Payne there’s a lot of bodies, but not a lot of proven NBA production (besides obviously KG). Add in the fact that Towns and Gorgui can play both C and PF and my head has been spinning trying to imagine how this is all going to work. What I decided to do is project what I’d like the minutes distribution to look like and then use each players per minute stats (estimates for rookies and realistic progression for young players) to come up with some statistical projections for the Wolves in the coming season. Here is what I came up with.

    Pos – Player – MPG – PPG/RPG/APG

    STARTERS

    PG – Rubio – 32 – 10.5/5.8/8.9

    SG – Wiggins – 32 – 17.3/4.6/2.2

    SF – Muhammad – 26 – 15.4/4.9/1.4

    PF – Garnett – 14 – 4.9/4.6/1.2

    C – Towns – 26 – 11.6/7.6/2.2

    BENCH

    PG – Miller – 10 – 2.8/1.2/2.3

    SG – Lavine – 22 – 9.0/2.7/3.1

    SF – Kevin Martin – 22 – 13.1/2.3/1.5

    PF – Bjelica – 20 – 8.3/5.6/1.4

    C – Dieng – 20 – 6.5/5.7/1.4

    PF – Payne – 16 – 4.6/3.6/0.7

I don’t have projections for Pek, Bennett, Tyus, and Prince. With Pek I’m not assuming he will be healthy. If he is, I’d assume he’d take Payne’s mins and Towns and Gorg would play some 4. Overall, I don’t have super high expectations record wise. If we end up with 30+ wins I’d be happy.

What do people think of these projections?

Those are pretty on point, I would predict somewhere in the 25-30 win range, a lot depends on if the vets get traded. If not, I would speculate

    MPG/PTS/REB/ASSISTS/PER

    Starters

    PG: Ricky Rubio 34/11/5/9/16

    SG: Kevin Martin 25/15/2/2/15

    SF: Andrew Wiggins 36/19/5/2/17

    PF: Kevin Garnett 16/5/6/2/13

    C: Nikola Pekovic 27/15/8/1/19

    Bench

    PG: Andre Miller 10/4/1/2/9

    SG: Zach Lavine 20/9/2/3/14

    SF: Shabazz Muhammed  25/14/5/1/19

    PF: Gorgui Deng 15/6/7/1/16

    PF: Bjelica 12/6/2/1/15

    C: Karl Anthony Towns 25/12/8/2/17

Most likely multiple players will be traded.

I mentioned him at the bottom. I love Pek, but I’m skeptical of an injury prone guy his size coming off an achilles injury…

I expect lavine to start and shabazz to come off the bench. A starting lineup of rubio, Wiggins, Muhammad, Garnett and towns will have issues with floor spacing.

I think they should attempt to trade or buy out both Martin and pekovic. Neither will do much for this team but get in the way of the young guys that need mins, and both still could provide some value to a contending team at this point in their careers.

I don’t know if Lavine is a better set shooter than Bazz. Bazz shot almost 40% on 3’s last year (given it was on just over 1 attempt per game). I think people forgot how good Wig and Bazz were together last year. When a team is forced to put their bigger wing defender on Bazz it creates a matchup nightmare with Wiggins.

I don’t think you have predicted anything too outlandish. Just a couple things I would adjust, one being an increase in Garnett’s minutes. Considering he won’t be playing back to backs this year, I have a tough time believing his minutes will have much of a drop off at all. I bet he is right around 20 minutes again with less minutes coming from Payne/Bjelica.

The other thing being that it sounds like Kevin Martin is all but a lock to start next year. Muhammad’s post scoring will be of more use with the second unit than with the starters. Also a Rubio/Wiggins/Muhammad lineup creates a difficult spacing problem because none of the three have shown consistent perimeter shooting outside of the corner.

Otherwise about what I would expect.

Very good points. KG will probably play more especially at the end of the games since Flip has so much trust in him and he’s a vet. As far as the starting wing spots, the mins projections are more what  I hope to see rather than what I think will happen. I agree K Mart will most likely start, but I have a soft spot for Bazz because he works his butt off and plays so hard. It would be cool if he got rewarded with a starting spot because I know that’s what he wants.

I totally agree about Shabazz. He might be the most exciting player to watch on the Wolves because he is everywhere doing everything. He has gone leaps and bounds since his first NBA appearances and UCLA days. I love how he posts up smaller guards and hits the offensive glass hard. Don’t see that out of 3 men in the NBA much anymore. The addition of Andre Miller, one of the best post-up guards in the league, might help Shabazz more than anyone.

I think Wiggins could potentially average 20 and 6, but I know that that’s a decent jump to make after your first year. I have a lot of faith in him. What do you think Towns’s defensive stats will look like? I don’t think 2 blocks and a little under a steal is too crazy to suggest, but I also have a lot of faith in him too

I actually included blocks and steals in my projections, but didn’t include them in the post. I had Towns at 1.8 blks and 0.7 stls.

first off i don’t believe the roster will remain the way it is… i do believe if they can move him;rubio will be traded along with pekovic.

maybe not until later in the season, as that seems more likely.

but if not others will be released to make room for the plethora of young talent.

this team has as much upside as the bucks…if not more.

i won’t get into numbers/stats, but i expect with prince, miller and kg on the roster the young pups will improve at a faster rate than before they were signed.

I do not expect towns to live up to the expectations in yr one… but non the less will have a very productive rookie season only to be outshined by wiggins and the emergence of the real anthony bennett.

Very sound predictions above guys, I’m wondering how the T-Wolves will handle KG next season, he is 39 years old now and had not been playing major minutes for the Nets over the last couple of years. Will they have a KG in the line up system and one without him as I don’t see him playing a load of back to back games given that he sat a fair few out for the Nets in recent years.

The T-Wolves won’t be likely pushing for any play off birth so overplaying KG would not make sense and they need to blood the younger guys to a certain extent. I fully believe KG should start any games he plays, he has an unbroken run going back nearly 20 years and as the T-Wolves greatest ever player, he deserves to keep this intact.

He could almost become a ceremonial starter as his value to the team is as a mentor/locker room leader especially for the likes of KAT.

KG must feel that he can still contribute as he could have easily taken a none playing role with the T-Wolves this season and maybe had an official retirement match.

A lot for the T-Wolves will depend on if Rubio stays sound as he can create and feed Wiggins, Lavine etc.

I can see them being a very uptempo team this coming season and really running the floor, KG would play defensive anchor and help to initate fast breaks by laying the ball off to the younger guys and let them do the running.

Fellow veteran Andre Miller will be a good guidance for Lavine and can be a useful playmaker for the 2nd unit.

Though some of swaggimal’s PPG averages seem a little high, they don’t necessarily mean that the Wolves will average 131 PPG. Garnett and Pekovic may both play under 40 games, Martin and Rubio (injury prone) and Miller and Prince (old) might miss a lot as well. So in their absence the other guys will have to score more and it will make their averages a lot higher.

Simply adding up individual PPG in a season doesn’t add up to the teams PPG. For example, if you add up the PPG of the often injured Nuggets’ players last year (excluding Barton and Lauvergne who were aqcuired mid-season) – you will get 130+ PPG as well.

     I’ll play

    Player-MPG-PPG-RPG-APG

Rubio-31-10.5-4.5-9.0—if he plays 65 games thats a plus.

Martin-29-17.3-3.1-2.5—hopefully we feed him, boost his stock and trade him to a contender

Wiggins-36-20.5-4.9-3.3—needs to take the next step, not jut scoring but make winning plays

Garnett-16-4.8-4.8-1.9—hopefully he plays like 30 games and we can forcefeed Payne/Bejelica

Towns-27-11.8-7.4-2.0—hopefully he follows the Wiggins track, struggle initially and just build as the season goes

Miller-10-3.8-1.5-2.7—thats where my fingers went, for no apparent reason

Lavine-24-10.6-3.3-3.1—he needs to become a complete player, not just an SC top 10 guy

Bazzy-20-10.8-4.6-0.9—just stay healthy, improve the 3 ball and try to defend

Bjelica-17-6.7-5.0-2.2—no clue what to expect, so I’m setting the expectations low

Dieng-22-8.4-7.3-1.4—he’ll probably play a fair amount. Want to see him play better in limited minutes, he played alright when he got a lot of minutes, really struggled when he didn’t play as much.

Pek—not banking on him giving them anything. Whatever he does is a bonus as long as he isn’t blocking Towns/Dieng/Payne

Payne—no clue what to expect. Would love to see him not shoot so many jump shots. I know he fancies himself a 4 man, but it’s not illegal to go in the paint.

Jones—hopefully he can have like a half season redshirt and start to crack the rotation sometime in January or so. I think he’ll be a good backup PG.

    Prince—don’t care, he’s old.

Bennett—anything is more than what he did last year. Kind of like Payne, needs to get his beefy azz in the paint.

My projection is if Anthony Bennet Doesnt get traded, he will let childhood obesity get the best of him, some popeyes, a little KFC, 12 inch sub, and 3 big macs later and he will find him self in a food coma. Marks my words.
