Yesterday we found out that Flip Saunders has been diagnosed with a treatable form of Lymphoma.  He sounds defiant about letting it get him down and is going to fight it.  Get well soon Flip, go T-Wolves!

Hope that Flip can make a full and fast recovery, the T-Wolves have a couple of very experienced assistant coaches in Sam Mitchell and Sidney Lowe who can probably run the bench if Flip was away for a long period of time. I wonder if this might might make Flip decide he needs to split the roles of Head Coach and President of Basketball Operations, I’d assume he’d likely retain the Front Office position given the amount of travelling and stress the Head Coach role must carry.

Hope he gets better soon, but I am with Hitster. He needs to put himself first at this point because being a head coach AND president of basketball operations would be a tough job for anyone so something will have to give if he has to go through a lot of treatment. Praying for him.

Hopefully Flip does recover and returning to the bench and having a chance to coach KAT for the first time could be an important part in his recovery. But I am still mindful of the stresses and emotions a coach goes through every night even if the team isn’t in contention, add in the road trips and it’s a hard schedule for anyone let alone someone with health issues who is 60 years old.

I supppose the perfect secenario could be Flip hands over the reigns to his assistants for a season with the idea to return to coaching in 2016 but interim coaches aren’t really a good idea and they would need to follow the same system as Flip otherwise the players will not know where they stand when Flip returns. Also if Flip did return and then found it too much they would need to make a permanent appointment eventually.

Flip has a major Front Office job and can leave the door ajar for himself to return but I still feel he’d be making the right decision by having the chance to appoint his own successor. It could be an internal promotion Sam Mitchell perhaps or it would be an exciting job for an up and coming coach. An established coach could want more autonomy if Flip insisted the assistants were maintained, felt Flip was in the background watching him, having KG sat near to him on the bench as a possible long term successor etc.

I’d be prepared to let Flip have the chance to return to the bench but if it seemed too much for him I’d hope he’d be advise by the owner, KG etc that he needs to put himself first and just concentrate on the FO job. He’ll have future draft picks to make, guys to trade, contracts to sort so he’d still be busy and he’d have been able to choose his successor of course.
