HS class of 2017 has Deandre Ayton (considered the best HS prospect) and Michael Porter sitting at number 2 (who I believe is the best prospect).

These two will battle along way,and it will be comparable to the Odom vs KD scenario.

Porter is a lanky SF who is a Zach Lavine type athlete with super smooth jumper, projects to grow to 6’10 or 6’11ft

Then I realized you ment "Oden" vs. Durant. Haha

I agree that both look like great prospects. Hope both remain healthy in this case

I can you are new here on this site joining  about a year ago. Certain player you are not allowed to criticize. One of them being Greg Oden. I was saying he was going to be a bust from day one. I would get a million negatives. Even today you will find crazy people who think he would rise from the grave and make a comeback. He was the poorest conditioned, most injury riddle player ever. He had ONE great game( National Championship Game) ,where he was SAVED by the extra media time-outs. He looked like he was going to pass out on the court.  I can’t recall another college game where he dominated a decent opponent.

( to be fair and not to sound like a know it all, I did think the Bulls should have taken Beasley over Rose. Then again, maybe he partied too much in South Beach, and would have gotten himself together in CHI. We have the luxury of Youtube,Watch Beasley play. He averaged more points and rebounds than  Durant and Blake Griffin!! )

You still get negtaives. Oden was not injury prone in college. He broke his wrist. That was the only injury he had until he got to the league. Had he not gotten injured, he would not have been a bust. You can’t classify a guy a bust becasue of injuries. They are a part of the game and can happen to anybody.

Oden still owns one of the bet Freshman seasons ever, averaging 15.7 points, 9.5 rebounds and 3 blocks per game. Although Durant did look like a freak coming out of Texas, you couldn’t justify passing up the best big man prospect since Duncan for him.

For the record, the only person that I know of who openly said they would take Durant over Oden was Bill Simmons.

I was pounding the table on this site, I dont know how far the archives go. I remember people being critical of Durant because he couldnt bench press the 185 and had  poor agility and vertical. I got a million negatives because I said these tests mean nothing, and I was right!

From what I’ve seen of Porter he is almost eerily similar to Durant at the same age. He has a lot of work to do on his body, but his offensive skill set is already extremely advanced for his age. He really makes the game look easy.

I haven’t really seen much of Ayton but I’ve heard he’s a monster.

That’s the thing I’ve gone by the scouting reports and heard Ayton is a monster but he really isn’t. To me he seems like a finesse type player. Reminds me alot of Chris Bosh. After watching him play its apparent he needs to bulk up and develop some grit in the post. Don’t get me wrong Bosh is a great player likely a hall of famer and amongstvthe best players my team has ever started. I just don’t think the general scouting report fielded on Ayton is correcct.

Also a possily similar scenario in 2017 draft with big man Harry Giles battling at the top of early mocks with swingman Josh Jackson who is supposed to be Andrew Wiggins type player.

Ayrton has already been compared to David Robinson just like Oden was so I can see what the post originator is getting at. I have not seen anything of Michael Porter so I’ll not comment on him yet.

Some may have stated that they would have taken Durant over Oden. But to suggest that you "knew" he would be a bust to me is revisionist history. Greg Oden didn’t have only 1 great game in his lone freshman year. That’s a ridiculous comment to make. Also; in speaking about that game vs. Florida…He dominated 2 guys who are 2 of the better big men in the game in Al Hortford and Joakim Noah. You don’t do that by accident….you do that because you are a very good prospect.

Oden did have some nagging injuries that the NBA became aware of during the physicals…but none of that was available to the public (to my rememberance) while he was in college.

So I’m going to be honest…. I thought Greg Oden was going to be great. Nothing I saw in his limited time in the NBA changed that opinion.

In 21 minutes per game as a rookie he averaged 9 and 7. In 24 minutes per game in his 2nd season he averaged 11 and 9.

To suggest that you "knew he was going to be a bust n college" ignores the fact that he was actually very productive as a pro but simply just couldn’t stay healthy.

For me I’m just not buying that.

Durant and Oden were both top tier talents.

It’s like those who kill Jordan for drafting Kwame Brown…. EVERYONE was going to draft Kwame #1. EVERYONE. He was the top rated prospect on EVERYONE’s Board that year.

We are all always right after the fact.

I have been wrong on players and right. I never thought Russell Westbrook or Kevin Love would be THIS good.

I thought Jerryd Bayless and OJ Mayo would have better careers.

I’ve been wrong…we all have. The question is are we honest about it. Lol! Not suggesting anyone isn’t being…but I’m not buying the "I knew Oden would be a bust" thing. Nothing suggested that in college. He was a monster.

Loved everything you said here but nitpicking on one thing about Kwame Brown. He wasn’t number one on everyone’s board. He wasn’t even the number one player in his HS class, he was ranked 6th behind Eddy Curry, Kelvin Torbert, Dajuan Wagner, Tyson Chandler and Ousmane Cisse. The 2001 NBA Draft was a poor draft class, as well as 2001 being a poor high school class, and what happens in poor draft classes is you take end up taking the "upside guy" and he was it.

It was still a debate between Tyson Chandler and Kwame Brown, as well as others like Curry and Eddie Griffith up to the pre-draft workout a couple of weeks before the draft.

Holy fudge, why do we always got to compare every lanky player that can shoot to Durant. Really Porter might not even be better than Quincy Miller or Perry Jones. Durant is special, meaning there’s not a prospect like him that is every damn class.

You can see the potential in Ayton, but he still has a very similar case to Porter. Yes, I understand he had one amazing exhibition game vs UNC, but he also ha 0 points against Prolific Prep and he disappeared many many other games. He better make the right decision in what college he goes to, cause if he doesn’t, he’ll be the next Jeremy Tyler.
