I was really looking forward to this year’s Summer League (particularly Las Vegas) but it has honestly been pretty disappointing. Obviously, it is unreasonable to expect a fluid game with such little practice time, unfamiliarity betweeen players/coaches and systems, players maybe changing their games a little due to fighting for roster spots, etc.

But some teams, IMO the Knicks and Lakers, barely look like NBA teams. Porzingis is lucky if he touches the ball once every 4 posessions and Derek Fisher still looks as lost as ever (from the NY area so I had the pleasure of watching him do nothing all season). D’Angelo Russell and Jordan Clarkson haven’t been put in good position by their coaches and kind of run through random motions before they are forced to improvise. Three of the most intriguing players are stuck on teams running outdated sets.

It seems as if the refs are blowing the whistle on almost every single play. Again, the players are a little out of control but let the guys play a little. Fans are trying to watch this game.

FInally, the timeouts have been terrible. The last two nights during the Knicks games, there were timeouts to end the first half around the 2 minute, 38 second, and 10 second marks. To end the second quarter we don’t need 3+ timeouts. Again, fans are watching the games and the coaches can go over anything at the half. Unfortunately, the popularity of the summer league amongst fans is going to turn it into a big commercial just like the NBA.

I’m watching the Knicks game now and I was thinking the same thing about Porzingis.  The team doesn’t really look to go to him consistently.  A lot of times when he does get the ball teams are bringing a 2nd defender forcing him to move the ball.  You’d think the Knicks would want to feed him the ball to see what he can do in a live game.

I’d want to put Porzingis get looks in different ways.  Have him set screens with the opportunity to roll or pop.  Mix that in with giving him post ups to show his versatiity.  Too often he ends up setting a couple of screens or standing on the weakside without touching the ball.

Derek Fisher is clueless. He’ll prove it this year when he can’t win with a decent roster.

Fish may or may not be clueless, but, again, does the Triangle offense still work?

If it did, wouldn’t Steve Kerr have used it?

The Knicks at least have a guy to build around in Porzingas.

I think the Knicks and Lakers are in the same boat.  Two aging superstars (ok, one being more of a super star and more aging than the other), a solid young piece to build around (Porzingas in NY and Clarkson and/or Russell in LA), and more questions than answers with the rest of the roster.  If the pieces fit and everything goes well, then both teams can compete for an 8th seed.  If not, it will be Skals The Limit or Lemons for Simmons…
