UnbiasedObserverParticipantBelieve it or not, there is a method to the Sacramento Kings madness. Now I’m not saying it’s conventional or even smart, but it is a plan that could work.
The Kings have one MAYBE two years to build around Cousins, the Kings know this and are doing their best to put a solid team around Cousins, as of right now, that trade with the Sixers looks horrible, the first rounder and the right to swap picks. However, the Kings DESPERATELY needed to clear the cap room that was weighing them down. (Thompson, Landry) and Vlade Divac took a HUGE risk with this trade.
If the Kings get who they want however, (Wes Matthews, Rondo) they have an opportunity to be a good team.
If things were to go the Kings way, their starting lineup would look like this
PG: Rondo
SG: Wes Matthews
SF: Rudy Gay
PF: WCS
C: Boogie Cousins
I don’t care who you are or what conference you play in, that is a POTENT starting lineup. The Kings biggest problems last year was defense, passing, and spacing.
WCS has an opportunity that many rookies dont, make an impact defensively their first season. Not to mention Rondo can defend (when he wants to) and Wes Matthews is no slouch either, so they would be improved on that end.
The addition of Rondo by himself makes the Kings a much better team at moving the ball, and then there’s spacing.
The Kings would have JUST enough spacing to get away with having the starting 5 I listed above. Rudy Gay is an adequate 3 point shooter and Wes Matthews is a fantastic 3 point shooter, not to mention Boogie can step outside and hit shots.
Then the Kings would have a bench that consists of
PG: Darren Collison, Ray McCallum
SG: Ben McLemore, James Anderson, Ray McCallum
SF: Omri Casspi, James Anderson, maybe Derrick Williams
PF: Reggie Evans, maybe Derrick Williams
C: Ryan Hollins, WCS
That’s an above average bench with some punch and some firepower, I’m not saying the Kings plan will work, but if it does, they can be a playoff team in a tough Western conference even with this whole George Karl mess. And if they’re plan works those picks they traded to the Sixers will have little to no value, it’s definitely risky, but one the Kings had to make or they start all over again.

llperezif they can land those two players, then the trade was worth it and the off season was a success.

LionsLiferParticipantRondo is washed up and a head case and Matthews is trash. The Queens are a joke as an organization. Probably one of the worst in sports. Try again.

SmooveKRYPTParticipantThey need to get both guys to commit for 3 years for it not to be a failure. If Rondo just signs a 1yr & bolts they’re right back in the same boat. If they can get longer term deals locked in with both then they should make the playoffs at minimum once. They have Gay & DMC locked in for 3 more years, adding those 2 FA’s with Collison & McLemore as bench pieces for the next 2 they’d have some real upside.

SFGiantsParticipantKings fans here and it’s odd watching people unanimously classify this trade as a loss for the Kings. People are overrating the abilities of Stauskas and watching him play last year, he might be a 4th option on a good team if he develops properly. Yes, he was drafted in the lottery, but he was an absolute reach where he was drafted, and many on here agreed. Kings already have Ben McLemore at SG, so Stauskas wouldn’t have had the playing time to develop. Landry could never stay healthy, and as such, was simply occupying cap space on the team that could be used on another player. Thompson is a decent big man, but simply needed a change of scenery. The Kings have two years of Cousins and simply needed to make a move to win now to keep Cousins from leaving. They may never draft a player of Cousins’ caliber again, so the time to win is now, not rebuild and be patient. I’d choose Cousins over Stauskas, Landry, Thompson and protected first-round draft pick any day of the week.

mixtape2003ParticipantRondo is coming off a bad season and Mathews is comming off a achilles injury so they may be able to get them on short cheap deals. But will Rondo and Karl workout? Karl like to run an uptemp offense and that was an issue with Rondo in Dallas cause he wanted to walk the ball up, seems to me all signs point to Karl being out cause they could have landed Lawson with the trade for with the Sixers.

TripleDoubleScoutParticipantI agree with you to a degree and it’s a thoughtful post which I appreciate. A respectful minor disagreement I have with your assessment would be the possible bench. That bench would not get it done in the West. The East yes but unfortunately Sacramento is in California lol. I ALMOST feel bad for the Kings. I think this scenario gets them in Utah Jazz territory but not really in serious playoff talk unless like 3 other teams have a complete meltdown.

Roland209ParticipantBeing a Kings fan it’s been a frustrating summer. I see this either being very successful or being dangerously close to another Brooklyn Nets.

EndlessknightParticipantThe Kings would still need to make the playoffs for the plan to work and given how loaded the west is that’s far from a given even if they get both their targets. Can you imgine how bad the plan is going to look if they miss the playoffs and win the lottery? Even if things go their way they’re at best the 6th seed in the west, not sure if that’s worth the risk they took.

bmac697ParticipantI really do hope they have a plan, I’ve always had high hopes for this franchise, they were always in good position to draft good players, but not all have turned out so far. The salary dump trade was kinda a head scratcher to me, but if you want to dump salary you got to make deal worth it for other partner. Now if they can get rondo and Mathews, but imo even if they could sign those players, I would like to see Denver do a salary dump and trade Lawson chandler and faired for some package of Cauley and Macklemore. I’m ibviously dreaming but I could see benefit for both teams and the Karl connection with the players from Denver. We still need to see how the whole Karl cousins drama unfoldeds. But the Kings need to start doing something. I originally liked the Landry signing, didn’t really pan out from injuries but there cutting their dead wight and looking to build around cousins which is their first smart move.

tblazer_NZParticipantWhat now that Matthews is off the table?
I guess they just have to stick with Brn McLemore

Bmore_DCParticipantThe Kings…have a plan?
They should just trade Boogie for Rusell, Randle, and Clarkson and start over, again.

Mr. HookShotParticipantAny chance the Kings can pick up Lawson and Faried without losing McLemore and Cousins. If they do they would have a nice starting line-up, albeit a bit weak on defense.
