PulseGlazerParticipantOnce the Knicks inevitably strike out on the top free agents (as poorly as they are run, why would anyone go there?), here’s what I think the Knicks should do.
They need a defending center more than anything. While DeAndre may be the dream, there’s a ton of competition. They’re far more likely to get Robin Lopez. Lopez proved he can anchor a top 10 defense, he sets screens, and can finish.
West is apparently all but in. Fine. I’d prefer Milsap, but fine. That leaves Melo as a 3, so fine. They have no 2-guard. Danny Green is a fine dream, but honestly, wait for whoever’s left of the 3 and D guys at around 10-mil. If they need to go cheap, either Jared Dudley or Jae Crowder work and give them some size at the 3.
At the 1, they should go get Patrick Beverly. His D at the point of attack with Lopez should cover for a lot of Melo’s mistakes. Milsap here over West would be huge, but with West, the 1-4 and 1-3 PnR’s will be rough. That’s why I think Beverly is so big. He gets after opposing points and doesn’t need the ball.
Does this make the Knicks title contenders? No, but they aren’t going to be next year. The organization refuses to tank for longer to get another stud. This should make them around a second round playoff team, introduce their rookies to a winning culture, and be attractive to big stars next year with the cap jump. What do you think?

Memphis MadnessParticipantNext year’s draft might be less deep at the top so even if they tank they could still wind up at 4. I don’t see the all around depth in next year’s draft either.
Bringing Porzingas along in a winning culture without mortgaging the future looks like the way to go. Then go after Kevin Durant or Anthony Davis, etc. in the next few years.

SnowtaParticipantThat’s interesting. With all the talk about Monroe I’m surprised you don’t mention him. Do you not want him? I think he could be a nice fit for the Knicks. Afflalo also sounds like he’ll probably sign there. With West also apparently favoring the knicks I don’t know how much room that would leave, but if they could get Beverly that would be huge. A lineup of Beverly, Afflalo, Melo, West, and Monroe with Grant and Kristaps off the bench could be a playoff team in the East. I’d be pretty impressed if Phil pulled this off although the team may not have the highest ceiling.

roni3ParticipantKnicks cannot tank next year because they do not have a first round pick. I like Lopez because of his defense but Monroe’s skill set fits the triangle better. West should provide for a stable pf, and affalo is two years removed from averaging 20 points on the Magic. Assuming Monroe gets 13-15 mill, 5-7 mill for West and 7-10 million for affalo should be within their cap space of 27/28 mill the Knicks have to spend. Beverly would be the dream pg for the triangle (spreading the court and elite defense) but I do not see it happening financially. good thing the pg position is of a lesser role in the triangle. Plus a solid bench leading with Porzingas, Galloway and other vets, playoffs are not out of reach.

TallmanNYCParticipantThey would need most of those guys to be a 500 team. They won’t get them. West would be huge because he cuts into Barga minutes and Prozingas. Even if Prozingas pans out he is not physically strong enough at this time to help an NBA team win. Remember he is 19. And he is not a physically strong 19.
Melo coming back will help, but they need to be much better to reach the 40 wins or so it will take to make the playoffs. I can’t see that happening this year without spending a ton of money to lock in vets at overinflated salaries.

Bed HeadParticipantIf you can even call it that.
Also, according to WFAN, the Knicks will not give Monroe the "max". Though whatever the offer, I hope he turns it down. Would much rather conserve the cap space for somebody who’s, like, actually good. Not some semi-slug who can barely muster 16ppg on a terrible team.
BTW, TallmanNYC, it’s spelled "Porzingis". "Prozingas" sounds like a herpes medication.

Sewok15ParticipantInstead of signing a bunch of mid level free agents they should save their money for next summer. Even if they signed one of the top players in this years group that won’t be enough for them to compete even in the lowly East. I think they need to be patient but Knicks fans think they have the right to contend every year because NYC is the basketball "Mecca" (it seems that phrase is out of favor now in this post 9/11 ISIS is gonna kill us all world).

How can you say Monroe is a semi-slug who is not actually good?? Do you actually watch the NBA? Or just like, like to say like a lot?
Honestly i find your posts to be slightly annoying to read.

Bed HeadParticipantClearly there must be something wrong with you.
At any rate, guys are constantly criticized for "putting up numbers" on lousy teams. So then what does that say about someone who can’t even do that? Particularly when that same player is slow, unathletic, and useless defensively? Plus boring as hell?

PulseGlazerParticipantMonroe is quite good. I’d take him over West, even… but both he and West is a recipe for disaster. Neither can cover the PnR and they’re both good at essentially the same things from the same basic spots as Melo. That front line could cover no one.

PulseGlazerParticipantWell, Lopez and Afflalo aren’t bad. Go get Beverly and maybe they can even cover someone!
