valentineThe 6 worst franchises in the NBA are as follows:
1) Sixers – This one is a no-brainer. Whilst they’re a draft-nerds dream, they’re running a once solid franchise into the ground. Jahlil Okafor was so upset to go there. They’ll never get free agents. Philly fans on this site love it, yet the empty stands suggest otherwise. A joke of a franchise.
2) New York Knicks – How these guys came in second is beyond me. James Dolan is the worst owner in the NBA and makes the environment toxic. Given the advantages New York has over small markets, they should be mentioned in the same breath as the Lakers and Celtics.
3) Brooklyn Nets – Hand out max contracts for unworthy players and give away all their draft picks. They’ pay so much in luxury tax that teams like Philly can tank like crazy and still turn a profit. Looks like they’re trying to turn it around, but the scars run deep.
4) Sacramento Kings – More of a comedy act than a basketball team. Seems like forever since this team was competitive and I doubt they’ll make the playoffs in the next 5 years. Someone managed to get a new stadium deal, but the league would be better off if they were sold to a Seattle-based ownership group.
5) Detroit Pistons – Newsflash! Greg Monroe is skipping town. Well that certainly isn’t shocking to anyone….except his own team! In the meantime, they’ve made Josh Smith (who wasn’t a bad player before or after his time in Detroit) look terrible and are wasting a lot of salary cap space on him while he plays good roles for the Rockets.
6) Charlotte Bobcats – No wonder that Sad Jordan face keeps popping up. Bostons throwing the kitchen sink at them to get that #9 pick…and they take Frank Kaminsky? He will help them get the 8th seed they seem to so desperately want.
Who did I miss? What order would you put these teams in.

Mad MaxParticipantI would put the Twolves in there they have the longest playoff drought of 12 years. That’s got to put them up there, although are seemingly begging to turn it around

Rip255I was close to putting the Nuggets in but just couldnt leave the nets off. Phoenix is an interesting one. They sure know how to alienate their players.

chall23ParticipantI hear you about the Sixers but I’m not putting them number one. They have a very good coach, ownership who is on board and a couple legitimate building blocks. I understand from a talent standpoint they obviously aren’t the best team but I’d take them with their current direction rather than a team that consistently is in the lottery and has a crazy owner that makes the draft picks for the team (Kings) Sorry Vivek

SpartanGloryParticipanti partly agree with your choices, minus the sixers and Pistons. Yes the sixers have a d league team but they have a few young players with lots of potential and tons of assets going forward. They also have a good coach, good ownership, and a plan (not saying it’s going to work). All they really need is one more good draft and a couple decent signings and they’ll be competitive in the east. Also, the Pistons and josh smith were a product of joe dumars, the previous GM who was a complete idiot when it came to free agent signings. SVG has the team on track to improve greatly.
I agree with your other picks though. Kings have terrible ownership and no organizational cohesiveness or control, nets have billy king…and the hornets have MJ who should completely remove himself from basketball decisions. Knicks should be improving and I think made the right choice with Porzingis, but because of Dolan should still be considered one of the worst. I think those 4 teams really make up the worst franchises.

Bed HeadParticipantAnyways, I’ll focus on Brooklyn (since they receive very little attention around here).
So what you’re really saying is that the Nets have the worst GM in the NBA? And I won’t argue that.
However, from a financial standpoint, Brooklyn is perhaps the best run organization in the league (well, top 5 at least). And now that ownership has become better acclimated to the American business model, there’s no doubt Billy King will soon be canned, and replaced with a non-asspuppet. At which point, the team’s outlook immediately improves dramatically.
P.S. I’d just like to add that Irina Pavlova is totally amazing and an awesome role model. For those of you who don’t follow the Nets closely, Pavlova’s the president of Prokhorov’s sports/entertainment company Onexim, and the person you see representing Brooklyn at the NBA Board of Governors’ meetings. (She sorta stands out, actually.)

Rip255Who said Billy King is soon to be fired?
It’s not just his fault. One man doesn’t mortgage the entire organisations future. The owner insisted they compete right away which isn’t easy….so he got the best available free agents at the time. The Owners are also responsible for this situation because they set Billy King an impossible task.
The Russians had no patience….Billy King stinks but he was just doing what he was told to do. They sunk into an even deeper hole with KG and Paul Pierce but thats beacuse they were digging a deeper hole using a "win-now" mentality that was never going to work.
Jason Kidd chose the beer and cheese ofMilwaukee over the Diamonds and Jay-Z in Brooklyn….that’s saying something.
(And 6 is only a random number if you choose to believe in random numbers. Stay tuned for my next post….the 6 worst coaches in the NBA).

Bed HeadParticipantUm, I did, actually. A little while ago.
That dude is brutal! Just check out this list of King’s "accomplishments" since taking over the team in 2010. (Note that he sucked when he ran the 76ers, too.)
http://www.basketball-reference.com/executives/kingbi99x.html
In fact, as we speak, he’s probably preparing to, like, package RHJ and McCullough in a deal for Kendrick Perkins or something.
P.S. "The Russians"? Seriously? Wow.

PulseGlazerParticipantThe Sixers have an unpopular plan, but aren’t poorly run. They are just trying something new. I also really think the Pistons have been well run the past few years. Beyond that, it’s hard to argue.

VRod305ParticipantIt’s clearly not the Sixers. The Knicks are paying Carmelo and Amar’e like 45 million to not play basketball. They have no draft picks. They have no young players other than Porzingis. No hope.
Lakers are next. They are paying Kobe way too much money because he’s Kobe and filling the rest of the roster with garbage.
Then you have the Kings that have Cousins and nothing else. They blow the draft every year.
Sixers aren’t even top-3. Hinkie has a plan.

Sewok15ParticipantAlso the Sixers made no effort whatsoever to field a competetive team and they still finished with a better record than the Knicks. They have more cap space then the Knicks and they won’t be in a hurry to use it unlike the Knicks who will likely sign whoever they can get in an effort to "win now" because they are the Knicks.
They still owe a 31 year old Melo coming off of knee surgery 100 million over the next 4 years. Their 27 million in cap room will likely be spent on 2 mid level free agents in an effort to appease Melo although they would be better off trading him…the only issue is who wants an aging injured gunner for 100 million bucks. Aaron Afflalo and Greg Monroe will not fix this mess…add the ownership issues and it is pretty obvious the Knicks are in much worse shape than the Sixers who will be on their way up.

mgreener_34ParticipantI actually think this thread is a little premature, and think that this is the best state the NBA has ever been in since I started watching ball back in the early 2000’s. We’re seeing small market teams like OKC and MEM go deep into the tax to sport good teams, and other teams like Utah and the Bucks are building their teams right through player developement, which is also at a league high in my opinion. Obviously their are some exceptions, and I’ll go over those even if I think it’s over rated.
Brooklyn Nets: They went for a home run and missed pretty hard, but lets be honest, do you blame them? They traded for Derron Williams who at the time was considered a top player in this league and was ranked only second to Kobe/LeBron in the "who’s better?" threads that get started every year (with Chris Paul). When they saw that didn’t work out they swung for the fences again with KG and Pierce, and again, do you blame them? That team on paper was stacked, and should have been a lot better. It’s not their fault that Johnson and Williams took such a big step back. I rather have a franchise that goes all out than have one that just sits on their hands all the time. People who watch baseball probably know what I’m talking about more, as it hurts so much to watch a team that never tries to sign good players, and trades their players once they get any kind of value.
Philly 76’ers: Again, they have a plan, and are atleast sticking with it. They don’t want to be mediocre, and I respect that. They are fielding bad teams, but they are doing it because they want to develope a star, not wait 3-4 years and hope that one signs with them. They are making great draft selections, getting arguably a top prospect in the last 3 drafts, and have really found some gems that might not have gotten a shot in the league like McDaniels, Covington, and Grant. They aren’t signing anyone to bad deals, and they aren’t drafting low level talent. They aren’t winning, but they certainly aren’t a terrible franchise.
Detroit Pistons: They had a great run in the mid to late 2000’s, and haven’t found their footing yet. They have drafted extremely well since them, getting Monroe, Knight, Drummond, KCP, Singler, and now Stan the Msan. They have given out bad contracts, and have traded for wierd players in an attempt to win more games. Those players didn’t work out, but they are attempting to fix that now by bringing in a competent coach who actually has a plan, and he’s starting to put some pieces together. Trading for Jackson was a great move, and I actually like the trade of Knight for Jennings. They aren’t the best run team, but I don’t think they are that bad to be honest.
I’m on the fense with:
New York Knicks: Since I’ve been watching ball, this team has always been doing something they shouldn’t. From putting those horrible Starburry/Zbo teams together, to over paying for bad players, and drafting duds like Renaldo Balkman they have never drafted a player who is really a game changer. I respect the fact that they again went for the home run like the Nets did, and bringing in Chandler/Stat/Melo was exciting for a while. That team could have been really good if they stayed healthy and had a better bench. I think Jackson is doing an okay job right now, but he’s in a wierd place. He wants to rebuild, but he has a star player in Melo who doesn’t want to leave, so it makes it really hard. He’s going to have to really hope he can strike in FA. Again though, this team is always trying to win and stay competative, so hats off to them, but I can’t forget the Isaiah Thomas years that easily.
Teams that I think without a question are terrible:
Sacremento Kings: From firing Malone mid season after his team literally just bought into what he was preaching was crazy to me, and now to be trying to get out of the Karl deal is another head scratcher to me. Drafting back to back SG prospects is also questionable to me, and trying to trade McLemore just shows me they have no interest in player developement. The team has new owners, so they might just need to figure out how to run this business, so I wouldn’t worry too much. It’s going to be a long journy, but people need to look at the facts and not what they hear. The Kings do not play a cherry picking offense, and no Vivik does not make every move for the team. He’s an owner that likes to stay in tune with his team, and that is casting a bad image for the team right now, but I think with time it could be a good thing.
Char Hornets: People need to understand that this team was an expansion team, so it was inevitable that they would start off terrible, but it’s some of the moves they have made that put them here. They are easily one of the worst drafting teams in the league, taking Felton, Morrison, May, Zeller, Biyombo, and a bunch of other players who they either gave up on quickly or just busted out of the gate. A lot of the signings they made were also pretty terrible, as they are a team that’s always looking to win now, but just don’t know how to put the pieces together. I don’t think they are horrible compared to other teams in proffesional sports, but for NBA standards, they are pretty bad.
