    Report —

Free agent Greg Monroe strongly suggested that he won’t re-sign with the Pistons, and he’ll meet with at least five teams once free agency begins — the Bucks, Celtics, Knicks, Lakers and Trail Blazers.
“I don’t want to be anywhere I’m not wanted,” Monroe said. “[The Pistons] have different plans and I respect that.” This isn’t at all surprising and Monroe said that he hopes to join a team “that’s ready to win,” where he can be “the missing piece.” All five of the teams Monroe is expected to meet with have copious cap space and a thin frontcourt. ———–

As a Pistons fan this really, really p1sses me off. Monroe playing the poor innocent victim “I don’t want to be anywhere I’m not wanted,” Monroe said…

FFS SVG has bent over backwards to try and get you to sign for over a year now. He got rid of Josh Smith for you and has done everything possible to try and get you to sign. If you want to play for a contender or chase the cash that is fine but how dare you say you are not wanted in Detroit – that is an insult to us fans !!!!

    From another report ———

It was always clear that Monroe wanted to be in the driver’s seat this offseason and take control of his career in a way his agent says he hasn’t seen the likes of.
“He took the very unusual step of not accepting a long-term offer, signing a qualifying offer so he can choose the team he wants to play for next season,” Falk said. “I can’t remember a player of his stature doing that in many years. He turned down a significant amount of money because he had the intelligence to want to examine his options. He didn’t want to sign a long-term deal with Detroit [last year].”

I want no part of Monroe especially at the max. I want either lamarcus or a defensive center. Though Monroe is a legit up and coming player the defense with him and melo playing a majority of their minutes together scares me lol.

Getting back to your points, I agree. I felt Monroe didn’t want Detroit not the other way around. I was reading an article online where they had him going to Toronto. Perfect fit. Another "me first" player to add to the "me first" players Toronto has. But bucs make a really good fit for him in my opinion. They definitely need the scoring and have players who can make up for his lack of defense.

Despite playing the victim, you gotta question the lack of foresight from the Pistons. I think it was pretty clear from the moment he declined the extension that he wasn’t sticking around. Only person taking a financial risk like that is someone who really wants to get out of Detroit.

It became evident that they weren’t making the playoffs at least half way through the season. Even if you only get cents on the dollar, a trade had to take place.

Instead, they paid Josh Smith to just disappear instead of trading Monroe and seeing if Smith was more productive playing PF. Now Monroe’s gone, and the team is looking at the lottery again.

Also, isn’t Detroit like the most unsafe city in America? I’ve seen Hardcore Pawn….No wonder he wanted to leave…..

I think Detroit is happy to see him go, it will be addition by subtraction.

I like Monroe, but he was stifling Drummond’s development as a post-up player and his defensive deficiencies were glaring.

I’m honestly not sure where he’ll fit in, probably at a team like the Knicks where he can post-up in the triangle.

If Porzingis’ shot-blocking is legit, Monroe and Zinger could actually make a pretty decent frontcourt down the line.

addition by subtracting their best scorer? the only thing greg didnt do well was defend and protect the rim. he still averaged a good amount of steals.

He’s simply a guy if I was a GM(but I’m not) I wouldn’t touch him. Not an efficient player, has a star style of play while not being good enough to be a star. Worst type of players if you want to win.

Not an effecient player? he shot over 50% from the field and 75% from the line for a center last year.

have you ever even seen him play?

Detroit was better with Anthony freaking Tolliver than with Monroe. He blocked less shots than Andrea Bargnani over his last 150 games. I could go on and on. You won’t win with a guy like that . Plain and simple.

Well duh, Toliver fits into SVG’s scematics more so than Monroe, who has been playing out of his comfort zone for most of his career. Having a big man in Drummond in the paint and surrounded by terrible shooters/me first players would make any 4/5 big man look bad.

I think Monroe is an extremely talented player, and people need to realize what he CAN DO and not what he CAN’t DO. No, Monroe isn’t going to lead the league in blocks, and no, he’s not going to extend his range out to the three point line. But what Monroe does bring to the table is something you can’t find in most 25 year old big men. Monroe is:

-An extremely good passer for a big man. He was never able to showcase his abilities because since his rookie year he’s been playing with the likes of Knight, Gordon, Smith, and Jennings. The one year the Pistons actually had any kind of offense was in 2012-13 when they got Calderon and Singler, and Monroe’s AST’s shot up to a great 3.5 for a starting center.

          – He’s a durable player, only missing 16 games in his 5 years in the league, and has the versatility to play both the 4 or the 5 for a team.

Defense. For all the flack this guy gets as a defender, he’s never once had a season where he was below league average in Drtg, VORP, defensive win shares, or DBPM…face the fact guys, Monroe might not be a shot blocker, but the stats say that he’s actually pretty good at D.

-He’s a great rebounder. He’s posting about a 23% defensive rebound rate for his career (Better than Blake Griffen’s, just to give you a thought), while playing most of his minutes along side a player who’s posting a ridiculous 29% defensive rebound rate for their career.

From analyzing the advanced statistics, and comparing to players who I think have the same impact, I think Monroe falls into the same category as a Paul Milsap, a player who many people on here wouldn’t argue if they got a big pay day, and a player who people love. Literally, all their advanced stats are close, and they even average the same amount. Milsap’s PER 36 is 16.9/9/2.5/1.6/1.2 while Monroe’s is 16.5/10.6/2.6/1.4/.7. Now obviously these two guys play extremely different games, and both bring something that the other doesn’t (Milsaps range and speed, Monroes ability to play the 5 and with his back to the basket), but the point I’m trying to make is that statistically speaking, these two players are extremely similar.

Personally I would love to see what Monroe could do on a team full of unselfish players who like to move the ball, and hope all the rumors of him going to NY are false. I think he would look good for the Spurs and Celtics, and would love to see him play center for the Celtics!

I’ll take him on Milwaukee.  He can do all the things Zaza did for us this year, but better.

I’d rather sign him than the other center we’ve been linked to in recent days; Tyson Chandler.  Chandler’s just too old at this point; it doesn’t make sense with the direction this team is going.

At time slast year Monroe just took over. Monroe is not the greratest player but last year he showed me flashes where he finally was assertive and took over games. Huge loss for the Pistons and for nothing.

This is ridiculous, all the hate Greg Monroe is getting is unwarranted. Sure, he is not a great defensive player, but he is a goot post player, passer, and a good rebounder. I actually find it ridiculous that there is talk that Tristan Thompson will get max but Monroe will not.

Monroe is a solid player and I think it’s pretty clear that Detroit and him had mutually agreed to part ways after this season so you can’t put the blame on one or the other. Detroit wanted more of a stretch 4 type to pair with Drummond. Hes not a great shot blocker but he isn’t as horrific on defense as some people say he is. He is an excellent rebounder and finisher around the basket, has a very good feel for the game, and can be effective in the high or low post. In this current market, with the salary cap set to jump, hes close to a max level player and someone will pay him. He’d actually be an outstanding fit for the triangle, although I’m not sure the Knicks fit his criteria of a team that’s just a piece away from contention.

I think Monroe really wants to go. He looks really hurt because Detroit acquired Ilyasova. This is, of course, unwarranted, because Ersan was brought in as a scorer off the bench. I’m sure Van Gundy is going to propose a max contract.

Monroe is a very good low post scorer and his midrange shot is OK, not great, but decent. His post defense is pretty solid, eventhough he’s not a shotblocker. Rebounding is great. Where he really struggles is defending the pick and roll. He’s going to receive a max contract somewhere.

what is the issue with a players testing the free agent waters. Seriously this is what free agency is about.  People get to  personal over when players are making busines decisions but say nothing when management does something.  Detroit was not a great team for Monroe and if I was him I would be leaving too. I think if Wiz moved Nene, Washington would be the best fit for him to play well and win.  Knicks have a chance to move up in a weak East if they can get Monroe and some other pieces.
