Status QuoParticipantI’m curious of the reaction I’ll get to this post but I think it’s worth taking a look at. I think there is alot to consider with the rumors of Noah and Gibson both being on the trade block and the reasons the team may want to move them. You hear Noah is pretty much a broken down shell of himself, because Thibs played him into the groud. You hear Gibson is pissed with the decision the Bulls management made firing Thibs. You look at their playoff performances against both the Bucks and the Cavs, and you see two players who have pretty much played too many hard defensive-minded minutes for a team that was without their star point guard and a number two scorer (they scored by committee for the duration of the lost Rose years until Jimmy Butler went in full contract year mode this year).
With all that said, the Bulls may not be looking at their most valuable trade asset. I believe that asset is Pau Gasol. I say this because there are two things that must happen this coming season that will affect the Bulls future, Mirotic playing over 25 minutes a game and Hoiberg completely opening up the offense. While Gasol is a great offensive player and blocked shots at a more than feasible clip this year, he’s 34, on the books for 2yr, 15 mil and a true asset to another contending team. I won’t get into who to trade him to, but you can’t tell me teams aren’t calling to see if he’s available. With the cap increase, if a trade can be made for him, you’ve just received a player who made the All-Star Team and is basically under contract for the MLE.
I mentioned Mirotic earlier, getting over 25 minutes a game, hopefully, starter’s minutes, I believe they should be Gasol’s starting minutes. He’s the type of big Hoibery has had at Iowa State. I like the combinations of Noah/Mirotic and Gibson/Mirotic more than him next to Gasol as well. I’d rather have two big bodies ready to bang than an aging center who shrunk and got tired in the second round next to my stretch 4 of the future. Yes, Noah and Gibson did the same thing, but Gasol doesn’t have that ready for war mentality. I realize he was hurt, but we’ve all watched Gasol over the course of his career to know he’s not an alpha dog type who will scrap and fight for every win, Gibson, Mirotic and Noah all have that in them. I think Chicago is going to need two men like Gibson and Noah for what may truly be the last playoff run the Bulls have in them, while developing a young but experienced Mirotic.
Noah is on the books for 1 year and 13.4 mil. Gibson is on the books for 2 years and 17 mil. While both are very tradeable contracts, the value isn’t truly there. For Gibson, maybe, but Noah is being talked about like he’s in an iron lung. Hoiberg knows what to do with a big who can see the floor. Shooters like McDermott and Mirotic should get increased minutes. Old Bulls relic Kirk Hinrich shouldn’t be re-signed (if this happens, I’ll start drinking), Mike Dunleavy hitting free agency, and the more than likely drafting of another shooter or a rookie point at 22. Chicago is already getting younger, Gasol just isn’t, I just think his minutes should be Mirotic’s versus losing Noah and Gibson to bang down low. When Noah and Gibson walk when their contracts are up (I don’t see Noah going anywhere though), they can say they took it as far as they could even with a new coach. I see Gasol as an experiment that ended with mix results, got regular season, not so great playoffs.
Gasol makes sense as a tradeable asset to help revamp the bench while not impeding on the development of young talent. He may be worth a late ist round pick as well. Those are my thoughts, as a Bulls fan and basketball junkie. What are yours?

TRC1991ParticipantKirk Hinrich was, via the PER, one of the worst players in the NBA last year

Memphis MadnessParticipantWithout Pau though, you guys wouldn’t have a low post scorer.
Trade Noah, Gibson, and Doug McDermott to the Grizzlies for Marc Gasol.
Get a two way center in Marc, a great offensive scorer in Pau then you still have Mirotic as a pick and pop big man off the bench. Mirotic can play with EITHER Gasol.
You can always pick up some cheap, young energy power forwards to help replace what Taj Gibson gave you.

ChewyParticipantI would pull the trigger in a heartbeat. Yes Marc is 30 and his older brother is older (duh). But even though Jimmy Butler is an up an comming star in this league, he was still a four year college player. He is not young. Time to win is now. You can’t wait for Lebron to grow too old, because by the time that happens, this Bulls core will be too old as well. You have to find a way to go through him.

Mr. HookShotParticipantIf the Bulls make Gasol available there should be plenty of suitors. Maybe OKC is an option, with them sending Lamb, Novak (for salary) and the 14th pick in exchange for Gasol?

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipantThe case to trade one of them is that Jimmy Butler is at his best when he is at the 2. He is bigger and stronger than most of the 2s in the league, and it gives him an advantage offensively in the post and off the dribble. Also, while he gave a nice effort against LeBron, he is giving up a lot of size and energy to handle that duty for 40+ minutes. If they can find a big, long 3, even if it is just to spplit the duty with Butler, then it would not be a terrible idea to consider. It is still too early. I think the draft, Butler’s extension talks, and other things need to happen first. I tend to be of the belief that Chicago will try to fill the Aaron Brooks/DJ Augustin/Nate Robinson/CJ Watson/JLIII/Mike James role in the draft. I happen to think Joseph Young would fit like a glove. Delon Wright could give a different look because of his size, but history says they prefer the gunner off the bench. Also, with the franchise’s affinity for big program guys, Tyus Jones and the Harrisons would not shock me either. If that is the case, the options to bolster the wing are limited. They are not a tax team, but are not flush with cap room. If the second or third tier market of Jared Dudley, Luc Richard Mbah a Moute, or maybe Wes Johnson does not interest Bulls management, then they have to look into a trade. If they have four big men worthy of playing 30+ minutes per night, then why not see what the trade market might offer? Once players start moving in free agency, the availability of others in a trade might change. They cannot be married to the status quo if they can possibly take another step by taking a risk.
