Huesy7ParticipantI haven’t been paying as much attention to this years draft as others, but I’ve recently been watching some highlights of Mario Hezonja. From what I’ve seen, he seems like he should be a top rated prospect, most mocks I’ve looked at have him going to denver or the pistons.. I’m just wondering if any of you guys have looked into him a bit more and know what he’s lacking? Cause from what I’ve seen he’s an athletic, confident player with a couple of dribble moves, some nice passes and a solid jumpshot. Do you guys think he could surprise and jump into the 3-5 range??

Anton123ParticipantI think top 5 is certainly a possibility. There have been some questionsabout his character and consistency, but the guy is an athletic 6’8” SG/SF with very deep range and experience playing on a very good team (Barcelona). If he gets into a situation where he’s constantly motivated to play within the team and improve, I think he can be one of the best players in this draft class.

ExumInfernoParticipantWhat he is lacking, or maybe what teams can be scared off. A few ideas.
Fran Vazquez, using a lottery pick on a European who never arrives is bad, and can scare teams off. There are a few players on Mario’s Barcelona team who were drafted but have yet to agree with their team in the NBA, like A Tomic, or haven’t been able to play well enough for the NBA.
The Eastern European father agent, lots of stories about who is in charge and guiding him to or away from teams.
The possible arrogance, he not only thinks he should be pick 1 but tells people that.
Not a starter, there are a few players picked high who didn’t start for their college or overseas teams who were not good enough to start in the NBA.
Playing time, 15 or 16 minutes a game doesn’t give a lot for scouts to judge on.
Not my opinions there, but just some things that have been said. Of course his shooting percentages are very good, he has length and as a young player was trained as a point guard, so he could be a passing small forward with long range shooting who can play two or three other positions.
Pick 4 to 10 would seem to be possible. 6 to 9 the more likely area. Many think at 8 to Detroit.
Something to look forward to in the draft, the possible overseas reach or steal, and how the fans of that team react, and how Mario reacts and if he stays away or is ready to play and go in summer league.

- 1984 Chicago Bulls – Michael Jordan #3
- 1996 Charlotte Hornets – Kobe Bryant #13
- 2015 (Insert Team) – Mario Hezonja #?
Moral to the story is that it does not matter where you are selected at to be a great player. No one will believe in you unless you believe in your own confidence. Will Mario Hezonja become Michael Jordan/Kobe Bryant? No! (possibly) But, this is something, I most certainly appreciate from any prospect coming into the draft already having a chip on his shoulder to boil over into Summer League play heading over to the regular season.A lot of these athletes try to play it safe by being "politically correct" all for face value. We need more of those Mario Hezonjas (Jameis Winston) type of prospects to have confidence in themselves to take a stand for who and what they believe in (self).
I do not know about anyone else, but I am just speaking on how I feel about Hezonja’s confidence to feel as if he is #1, which is not a problem at all. It gives him some type of expectation to play-up to during the season.

Huesy7ParticipantYeah.. thats what I saw in his highlights… he wasn’t at all afraid to step back into threes and shoot with confidence.
Kobe and MJ are two of the most arrogant players I’ve seen in any sports and they’re also two of the most sucessful. It almost seems like players without that ‘I’m the best’ attitude don’t live up to their potential.
That’s something I felt prospects like Ben McLemore didn’t have… I watched a couple of his games and he kinda seemed to float around on offence not really being uber confident. He still could be good, but he hasn’t lived up to the expectations he had surrounding him before the draft.

Lotto StudParticipantIf the Sixers feel the "need" to bring on a perimeter game to make life so much easier for Joel Embiid and Nerlens Noel; Mario Hezonja should not be written off as the selection for #3.

IndianaBasketballParticipantI’ve only had the opportunity to watch highlight videos of Hezonja, but I’ve heard A LOT about him from others, one person in particular who’s worked with him directly through overseas/international training, etc. That person is extremely high on this kid and thinks his work ethic, skill level, competitiveness, aggressiveness, confidence and understanding of the game is extremely high. Throw that in with his physical tools and great "pop" in his game. He definitely could end up being one of the best players in this draft.

Magic JordanParticipantI love this guy. I have stated multiple times that if the Lakers had two lottery picks I would target him with the 2nd. If they would have stayed in the 4th position I would have been on board with them taking him at that spot. I don’t think that is too high. I believe 2nd might be too high, especially considering the Lakers current situation, meaning if they had more players already in place then they could take him, but they really need a big.
Great athlete, can shoot and has a mean streak. He sounds perfect. I am not quite convinced that he is that good at creating his own shot as his dribble moves are a little unothodox, but if they work in the league he is currently in they might work in the NBA. That can also be improved with time. His stepback game is nasty. Overall I just really like him as a prospect and I see him as the best wing in the draft. He should be able to contribute, or at least play in the rotation from day one. He has been a pro for a few years now and I think him not getting a lot of playing time at Barcelona is more politics than due to his talent. I have read that they didn’t play him a lot because they were hoping to keep him (seems like fault logic) but when he did play, he typically produced in the 2nd best league in the world.

kobyzParticipantHe doesn’t have advanced game, low basketball iq, bad shot selection, not good enough to get any minutes the last half year in Spain…

Lotto StudParticipantDante Exum may be the perfect example of why a team should take Mario Hezonja. Life is like a box of chocolates; you never know what you will get out of any prospect, no matter how big of a household name they present themselves to be.
Prior to Hezonja’s rize to trending topic. Rudy Fernandez and Danilo Gallinari have been my favorite Euro guys to come over and make their mark. As of late, Danilo Gallinari has been slowed down by injuries but the season he had in New York was amazing under Mike D’Antoni.
As for Henzonja. I believe he is the real deal from the clips alone, besides the point of nailing 8/8 from Spain to Pluto! From what I have been hearing of Draen Petrović through the older guys before my time. Hezonja strikes me as the "next best thing" to a modern day version with more athleticism. I am very anxious to see him land in the perfect situation as a "Stealth Bomber" this upcoming season.
