So listening to espn radio yesterday. This was being talked about.

David Lee being traded to the Cavaliers for Brenden Haywood. This gives the Warriors cap flexibility because there is a clause in Haywood’s contract that makes his salary non-guaranteed (they would waive him). Thus giving them ability to match any offer Green gets in free agency. Lee gives Cleveland more depth in the front court.

If I’m Cleveland I don’t do this. Next season I have Mozgov, Varejao, Thompson, and Love. If Love leaves, then maybe I do it. However, $15 million as a cap hit is a lot to take in Lee’s salary.

If I’m the Warriors I absolutely do this. There were many trade rumors before the trade deadline. With the reduced role Lee plays on the team now, you have to move that salary. This also let’s them dump the salary without taking on anything or losing any valuable assests (draft picks).

    Thoughts?

Cleveland probably says no. Warriors do this in a heartbeat.

Why do people keep saying Love is leaving this off season, he’s said recently as what 5 days ago? that he is playing next year under his player option with Cleveland.

Because that narrative was set in the beginning of the season and everyone knows the media loves their reoccuring narratives.

Nevertheless, where there is smoke, there’s fire. I can’t neccessarily believe what an athlete says coming out of his mouth. They are taught to give the bland answers that causes the least media attention possible. What do you think he was going to say right before his team was going to play a Finals game? I don’t think he’ll leave this off-season to keep his options open but next year, I’d be suprised if he stayed. If you want to be honest with yourself, if Love were to have it his way, he’d be a Laker as a first or second option and as a contender but that can’t be locked in because he needs reassurance that another star player will come that you know he can jive with. So, he has backup plans. Cleveland is one of them. I think he wants to see how the LaMarcus Aldridge situation goes down in Portland and probably Houston too.

mahad – I think everyone is just waiting for Kobe to retire.  No one wants to play with him.

That narrative is somewhat overblown though. Henry Abbott was making it out to be like Kobe’s personality was the sole reason free agents wouldn’t come. Or, maybe it has to do with the guy tearing his achilles heel at the age of 34 and at the end of the season too, where it would carry over into the next season as it did in 2013-14, and him probably turning into a shell of himself, which proved to be true for the 2013-14 season and the 2014-15 season.

So if it was 2009 Kobe, who cares about his attitude. People would come play along side him. 2015 Kobe, not so much.

Golden State should be looking to trade David Lee to have as much cap space as possible for Draymond Green, but I can’t see Cleveland going for this. Portland could be a candidate if they lose LaMarcus Aldridge through free agency. I could see Detroit being another possible destination for Lee as well if Greg Monroe bolts elsewhere (which seems very likely at this point). To me, Detroit seems like the better option as Lee as shown the ability to hit the mid-range jumper consistently and would have his defensive ability covered up by Andre Drummond. I’d be interested to see what Golden State would want in return for David Lee. He’s now 32 and is past his prime but can still be a very serviceable role player on a contending team.

Golden State better throw in their 1st with that because the production you’d get from Lee isn’t worth half of what Cleveland would pay him and probably even less to the Warriors. If GS would rather be safe than sorry with DeDe Id actually still move it with the pick and maybe get a future 2nd from the Cavs otherwise it isnt worth it to Cleveland (with or without Love)

He’ll be a decent 6th man any team with a lot of cap room could be interested.  I even think a return to the Knicks isn’t out of the question depending on how free agency goes. Portland, Detroit and other teams might be interested as well.  If you get a 1st out of GS then I’d definitely do it.

Agree that this would be a bad move for Cavs money-wise.  But if they could get a 1st round pick, might be worth it.  David Lee is not worth his contract in GS, but could have an expanded role in Cleveland and he is a solid baller.

warriors would have to throw in more. They desperately want to dump lee’s salary and while lee can still play and contribute for someone, he is not worth 15 mill on a one year rental deal.

Or maybe the Warriors to play Lee a bit more, or actually play him.

For his career, a much better shooter from the field and the free throw line than Green.  Better rebounder and scorer.  Assists are close, Green is of course the better defender and he hits lots of three-pointers but his percantages are not great.  Lee at center and Green at power forward for a few minutes, Green at small forward and Lee at power forward, it would put another rebounder out there to combat T Thompson.

There is no way teams fight in the finals and then make a big trade.

The Warriors do want to move Lee because of the money situation, so that means another team with cap-room or a trade exception or non-guaranteed deals.  Lee can still play, his per 36 minutes numbers this season are 15.5 points, 10 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, 1 block,  51.1% from the field.

A team with money will miss out on free agents and will appear as a place for Lee.  Maybe Phoenix will have room and will hope Lee gets them into the playoffs, there is always the 76ers with money available, if Detroit or Portland lose their free agents they could use Lee, Atlanta too if their free agents walk, and maybe Utah is the best fit.

Utah and Golden State have made a trade before, Utah taking contracts and the Warriors ridding themselves of money.  Either plan it now and have Golden State pick for Utah in this draft, or because Utah already get their future pick then a 2019 pick to Utah.

Jazz start Gobert and Favors, then bring Lee’s offense off the bench, it would work.

Maybe Orlando, they could have a lot of room if they don’t pick up some team options and miss out on big free agents.  Lee was a big college star with Florida.  A former two-time All-Star on the team, a veteran who knows how to play, Lee would have to help the Magic a bit.

Another reason to play Lee more in the playoffs, push his perceived trade value just a bit higher.

Except a lottery team like Philly,in order to get a first round pick with Lee’s contract,I see no reason for any team to take Lee. Not even a good mid range shooter anymore, bad defender, out of rythm…
