Despite NCAA sanctions Syracuse is set up nicely for a 3/4 year run, The issue will be having players ready to step in for 18/19. They have a nice start to class of 17′ with high interest from #43 Melo Eggleston, #13 Treyvon Duval and #24 Jordan Tucker. They will likely forego further recruiting for 15′ and 16′ and look to build relationships that will lead to strong classes for 17′, 18′ and 19′.

They should be great the next two seasons, season three they should be pretty good, but that exposure is going to get them cleaned out by the NBA draft and they could be in for a 3 to 4 year dry spell if they don’t have some luck recruiting 17′ and 18′.

Here is look at possible rosters for the next four years, including assumptions on early departures.

    15/16

Coleman Jr, Gbinije Sr, Cooney Sr, McCollough So, Roberson Jr, Patterson Jr, BJ Johnson Jr, Mal Richardson Fr, Kaleb Joseph So, Tyler Lydon Fr, Diagne Fr, Howard Fr, Obokoh Jr. (Out of play for Thomas Bryant)

    16/17

Roberson Sr, Patterson sr, Johnson Sr, Richardson So, Jospeh jr, Lydon so, Diagne so, Howard so, Obokoh Sr, Moyer Fr. (That’s 10, so they are out of picture for Giles, Battle, Etc)

    17/18

Richardson Jr, Lydon Jr, Diagne Jr, Howard Jr, Moyer So……This is where they will need some Vaseline. They need to bring in a strong 5 man class of 17 to back up this 5. All 5 of these players are going to be on the nba radar and may be likely that 4 of them declare.

    18/19

Moyer Sr…….If they get 5 from class of 17, they will need 4 more in the class of 18, But they may not be able to do it because they are committed to Richardson, Lydon, Howard and Diagne and can’t assume they will declare.

Hakim Warrick Fab Melo and Johnnie Flyynn r free agents and have made so much money.. Maybe they can back and play for free until the team gets back on its Feets!!! A team of Flynn, gbinijee at guards Warrick and Robertson at forwards and fab at center will win the ACC next year

There’s been a lot of talk all season (amongst Syracuse fans) about some players potentialy transferring due to not getting enough playing time. The most frequently talked about has been Ron Patterson. Despite seeing his playing time increase this season by 8.5 minutes per game, he has seen his field goal percentage drop from 38% to 32%, his three point percentage drop from 32% to 18%, and his free throw percentage "raise" from 0-3 his freshman year to 2-10 this year. Boeheim has been all over him saying things along the lines of "I’m 70 years old and I can shoot 15% from three" and when Patterson missed two crunch time free throws and called them ‘close,’ Boeheim said was not pleased since close doesn’t cut it in college. Maybe in 8th grade, but not college.

Other players who could transfer are Dajuan Coleman, who despite being the #14 player in his class has played 37 games in 3 years, and never played more than 25 minutes in a game; BJ Johnson, who has potential in my opinion, but at 6’7 185 and viewed as a shooter, he needs to shoot better than 26% from three; and Chinoso Obokoh, who saw limited action in 13 games, and was mainly recruited to help bring in his high school teammate, Thomas Bryant. Obokoh has some potential, but at 6’10 215, he’s not ready to contribute and be a force to be reckoned with in the middle of the zone. He’s definitely at least two years away from being a contributor, if not three.

And it is possible that Gbinije or Cooney could jump ship and leave without sitting out because of these sanctions (I think they can at least). Cooney bleeds Orange and I don’t think he’s even considering leaving. Some have suggested Gbinije could leave early this year if he really wanted to (he’s put up 17-5-5 since McCullough went down) but I expect him to be back again.

All four incoming recruits have said they will remain committed despite the sanctions. I believe Syracuse has the option to push the scholarship sanctions back a year, so they can still have 13 if they want to next year (it kind of sucks cause Syracuse only had 8 healthy scholarship players this year. I wish they could count this year as one of those four haha). So if one person transfers, we are still in the running for Bryant this year. I’m fairly certain he wants to come here, it’s just a matter of the spot opening up for him.

Then for 2016, Moyer said he will also remain committed to Syracuse despite the sanctions. Let’s assume Patterson transfers in 2015 and we land Bryant.

The team will have: Joseph jr., Howard so., Richardson so., Johnson sr., Roberson sr., Moyer fr., Bryant so., Lydon so., Diagne so., Obkoh jr., and Coleman sr (assuming he redshirts this season). This is also assuming McCullough is gone after next year which is likely the case anyway. I don’t think we ever had a shot at Harry Giles, but I do think Tyus Battle is 50/50 between us and Duke right now. I think he is also like Bryant, and wants to come to Syracuse so he can be a PG (he’d be a SG at Duke), but it comes down to whether we can get him a scholarship or not. It’s possible we could someone get a scholarship open for him, but it’s so far in the future, I don’t know how it would happen, considering it looks like we’ll be at 11 for 2016 (whether we have Bryant or Patterson, it doesn’t matter. We are on pace for 11 that year). So we really would need to free up two spots to land Battle. This is why I’m thinking we could potentially see three players transfer this offseason. One to open up a spot for Bryant, and two so we can get Battle down the road. Boeheim isn’t going to force a player out obviously, but he’s going to sit down with his players and be realistic with them. How much time can BJ Johnson get at the 2/3 spots with Richardson, Roberson, Moyer, and Lydon also competiting for minutes. How much time is Patterson going to get at the 1/2 spots with Joseph, Howard, Richardson, and maybe Johnson and Battle? How much are Coleman and Obokoh going to get with Diagne and possibly Bryant coming in? I’m not saying I want to see these players leave, but if they want to play, they either really need to improve their games or transfer. There aren’t going to be enough minutes to go around for everyone, so transferring sooner rather than later may be their best choice considering they shouldn’t have to sit out a year with these sanctions now.

It’s really not even worth looking into 2017 and beyond at the moment since we don’t know who, if anyone, will transfer. The amount of people who transfer this offseason will be huge in terms of which recruits we get in the long run. If no one transfers, which is a good possibility, then Syracue’s hands are tied for 2015-2017. If a few kids decide to transfer, Bryant and Battle could still be in play.

I respectfully disagree with you on a few points, though I’m not going to neg you like you did me. A thoughtful response deserves that respect.

First, rumors of mass transfers are like you said, amongst Syracuse fans, that is pure unfounded speculation. In the case of Patterson, Syracuse rescued him from academic pergatory(i’m a little more sure how) and he is beginning to blossom in this system.

Pointing to stats such as FGP to show a decline in efficiency is useless as he took a total of 29 shots in limited minutes as a freshman. You can’t point to fgp as an indicator of anything for a player that didn’t play. His production this season will serve as his baseline, not last season. Jim B is harsh, that’s his teaching style, if you can’t take it then you have a lot more issues to deal with.

He is developing as ball handler in this system averaging nearly 2 assist per game in just 11 minutes, that is something he needs desperately to have a shot at the next level. His shooting will get better as he gets more comfortable. It sounds like you are hoping he transfers so Syracuse can give Bryant his scholly, but why would he do that considering he is in position to see a huge increase in PT? I would prefer to see Patterson in a 3 guard rotation with Gbinije and Cooney next season and Joseph take a red shirt.

Dajuan Coleman, again, why would he transfer? He is a local kid who has worked hard to rehab injuries and is now in a position to be a go to player next season. He played 37games because he got hurt both years and spent this entire year rehabbing. He has not deserved to play more than 25 minutes in any game because he simply was not good enough to warrant minutes over Christmas ad Kiete.

BJ Johnson does have potential, again he is next up on the depth chart to see minutes increase.

Gbinije and Cooney are headlining the team next year, why would they transfer after all the work they put into the program, knowing they will contend for ACC champ next season. Gbinije may consider entering the draft, he has just completed his 4th college season, but he is still under the radar, a great season next year might solidify him in the 2nd round.

The most likely to transfer is Kaleb Joseph because he can see Patterson possibly being ahead of him on the depth chart and Frank Howard coming in behind him.

First, I didn’t neg you. I don’t comment nearly as often on this site anymore and rarely log in and vote on comments.

The rumors of transfers are just speculation as you said, but Boeheim did say to expect "tremendous changes" this offseason. Maybe he knows something we don’t.

As for Gbinije and Cooney, the rumors of them jumping ship were mainly if we were banned from postseason play again next year. Seeing as that is not the case, they both should be back. As a matter of fact, Gbinije said he is "more than likely" returning next year and Cooney, Joseph, Johnson, and Roberson all pretty much said the same. Patterson and Obokoh left the locker room before they could be asked their plans for next year by reporters. It all needs to be taken with a grain of salt since players have always said one thing immediately following the conclusion of their season and then gone back on their word a few months later.

And obviously Patterson’s sample size wasn’t that big his freshman year, but what I was mainly trying to point out is that his shooting percentages are abysmal at best in both seasons. The only reason he even played was because he could dribble the basketball. If he couldn’t do that he would’ve never cracked the lineup. Once Joseph develops his handle a little more, and hopefully his shot too, Patterson will barely sniff the court, especially with Howard and Richardson coming in. Joseph is pretty much guaranteed to start again at PG next season so there is no reason for him to transfer from Syracuse. I can’t see how you think Patterson is more likely to stick around than Joseph, especially considering how much Patterson is in Boeheim’s dog house. And at no point was Patterson ever ahead of Joseph on the depth chart, so what makes you think he will be next year? Sure, Patterson played minutes at the end of games sometimes, but that was because he could dribble past a press. Joseph couldn’t do that. Once Joseph can, Patterson has no role on this team. I hope the best for Patterson, but unless he drastically improves his game, he won’t ever average more than 10 minutes per game on this roster. That’s why a lot of people are thinking he may try to transfer for more playing time.
