I’ve always been a big fan of his game and its nice to see him finally getting some recognition this year. He’s having a historical level season shooting the ball as far as percentages go and he’s also underrated in other aspects of the game as well. However, I would have to stop short of jumping on the Korver for All-Star bandwagon.

For one, he’s only the fourth or fifth most important player on his own team, easily behind Teague, Millsap and Horford. While he may be the deadliest catch and shoot player in the league, he can’t really create his own shot and has to rely on other players to get open, making him a very one-demonsional offensive player. If you look at every other guard who would be considered for All-Star status this year, they are all players that can create their own shot and create shots for others. While he is a feisty and probably underrated defender, no one’s gonna confuse him for Kawhi Leonard.

I understand that some of the things he does best are in the more subtle areas of the game that don’t show up on the stat sheet, like moving without the ball, setting screens, and being in right position defensively. His presence on the floor also creates more space for other players to thrive. Still, I can’t really think of a player with worse overall stats and a lower usage rate that has made an All-Star team. (Jamaal Maagliore in the early 2000s comes to mind but that was literally because there were literally no quality centers in the East at that time).

This is not a knock on his game at all. He might be the best role player in the entire league right now and I think that the league needs more players like him. He knows his strengths and weaknesses, and plays to them perfectly. I just can’t really see him being an All-Star.

I agree with you for the most part. Worth considering is putting him against your other Eastern reserves. Thinking back to a 2006 Detroit team that had 4 all stars (Chauncey, Rip, Ben and Sheed) named as reserves, I am inclined to think that this Atlanta team deserves 3.

36-8 and by far the best team in the East record wise definitely deserves two allstars and maybe 3. You don’t normally picture Korver when you think All star but I agree with the OP that he is one of the best role players in the league. The Hawks are firing on all cycles and he is a big part of it. All star may be a stretch but I wouldn’t put up much of a fight with how theyve been playing

Allstar game is for the fans. They want to see the league most talented  and gifted players on display. Players are not going to be setting screens and running  plays all day so Korner can get open.

Also the allstar  games is not and should not be soley a team reward.  Just because  you play good as a team doesn’t  mean you have great players. Also I wouldnt reward players like kobe putting up a million  shots on a bad team and shooting  terrible. A guy like Vuecic on Orlando  is an allstar to me. He is not on a good team but he is definitely  a guy that can play.

It’s weird because they are more team than individual players..  I’m not sure if any of them truly should be in the All-Star game.  They sit every other game and no one averages 20 points.  In fact, no one average 15 and 10 on that team…  I say they probably get 2 players in, the thing is….who do you choose?

Plus the Pacers had the best record last year, Lance wasn’t included in the All-Star game and he had a better season stats wise than Korver.   It’s a awkward situation because we may look back on this and say "Kyle Korver was in the All-Star game"?

Millsap and Teague should pretty much be locks. Millsap’s 16.9 PPG and 8 RPG might not jump out at you, but with 3.1 APG, 1.7 SPG and a 19.6 PER his all-around play and efficiency makes him one of the top PFs in the East.

Teague is putting up 17.2 PPG, 7.5 APG and a PER of 22.79 which is 12th in the league (and ahead of PGs like Lowry, Lillard, and Wall). His numbers are pretty similar to Tony Parker when the Spurs were elite, except Teague plays better defense.

I could even see Horford getting in: 15.4 PPG, 6.7 RPG, 1.4 BPG and a PER of 21.04. The East doesn’t have that many strong All-Star candidates and he’s already made a couple All-Star teams so he’s already established as that caliber of player.

they should be locks. but those stats are underwhelming. I would expect them to barely get in like Paul did last year, but  not considered "locks" though…   But as I look around players aren’t really THAT great this year in the East I guess…  Even Kyle Lowery is in the All-Star game as a starter.

Yeah, the East doesn’t have as many All-Star caliber players as the West but there is certainly a precedence for players on very good teams making the ASG with numbers similar to Millsap and Teague’s.

Somebody already mentioned BJ Armstrong (and Teague’s numbers are way better) but point guards in the last 10 years include Chauncey Billups in 2007 and 2008 (17.2 PPG, 7 APG and 17 PPG, 6.8 APG), Jameer Nelson in 2009 (16.7 PPG, 5.4 APG), and Tony Parker last year (16.7 PPG, 5.7 APG).

For power forwards, examples include Rasheed Wallace in 2006 (15.1 PPG, 6.8 RPG), and Chris Bosh in 2013 and 2014 (16.6/6.8 and 16.2/6.6).

Now obviously those are end of year (not mid-year) numbers but I’m pretty sure none of those guys had a significantly better first half of the year. Guys getting into the ASG with numbers like that really isn’t that uncommon.

2 Dunks on the season. If this isn’t a confident year for Korver than any previous outburst, I don’t know what’s to come in the postseason. I just can’t wait to hear Mike Breen’s "BANG!"

Korver is definitely a role player, but he’s not just a good one, nor is he just one of the best in today’s NBA. He is a historically great role player that makes the team he plays with much better. He stretches the floor to a degree rarely seen and plays solid D. So what if he rarely creates his own shot; he moves so well without the ball that he finds his own open looks and wears out opposing defenders.

Remember that 50/40/90 club? Korver’s taking efficiency to a whole new level, creating a new elite metric. No one on the Hawks would be as good without him and that tends to show up in their stats, not his. To me, in the weak East and in a year without PG, it’s a no brainer.

The Jazz and Bulls are still kicking themselves for letting this guy go.

I have Millsap and Teague down as Hawks guys I think deserve to be in the All Star game. There can be a case made for Horford but I would think Korver is pushing it a bit. Look at the great recent Lakers team the likes of Odom never made an All Star game, no-one outside the Spurs big 3 made it either.

The idea is cool but I don’t see it happening.

BJ Armstrong made the ASG in 1994 and I think he averaged 14.0 points per game.

Korver isn’t putting up huge shooting stats but he really helps the team.

He should at least be considered.

Great Zach Lowe article today explaining Kover’s value beyond shooting the ball.  Horford can thank Korver for a couple buckets a game due to rotations sticking to him.
