CochiseParticipantCLEVELAND — Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose isn’t holding in his frustration any longer.
After watching his team give another lackluster effort and lose for the sixth time in the past eight games with a 108-94 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday night, the former MVP delivered some emotional words.
"Everybody has to be on the same page," Rose said. "Until then, we’re going to continue to get our ass kicked."
Asked who was not on the same page, Rose was quick with a response.
"It’s just the whole team," he said.
The Bulls canceled practice on Tuesday.
Rose’s comments come amid one of the worst stretches of the Tom Thibodeau era.
The part that irritates players and coaches isn’t so much the losing, especially given that the Bulls are playing without starters Joakim Noah (knee/ankle) and Mike Dunleavy (ankle). It’s that they’re not playing with the type of intensity that has come to define them over Thibodeau’s five years as coach in Chicago.
"I think communication is huge," Rose said. "We’re quiet when we’re out there, and it’s leading to them getting easy baskets. We got to give a better effort. It seems like we’re not even competing, and it’s f—ing irritating."
Thibodeau didn’t mince words while discussing his team’s most recent disappointing performance.
"We got to decide when enough’s enough," Thibodeau said. "The way we’re playing is not acceptable, so we have to change it."
Unhappy New Year For Bulls
The Bulls’ defense has not been the same since the calendar turned to 2015, as they’ve gone from having the fifth-best field goal percentage defense to the fifth-worst.
Bulls’ NBA Ranks This Season 2014 2015 Defensive efficiency 10th 25th Defensive FG pct. 5th 26th Defensive reb. pct. 17th 26th >>Bulls: 22-10 in 2014, 5-6 in 2015 Rose didn’t buy the notion that because the Bulls have new pieces, notably Pau Gasol, Nikola Mirotic and Aaron Brooks, and continue to play through injuries, those issues explain why his team continues to falter after a stretch last month in which it won 13 of 15 games.
"We’re midway through the season," Rose said. "That should be a part of [the discussion]. There’s no excuses. My biggest thing is competing. Playing this game for so long, when you don’t have that edge, we’re going to keep getting our ass whupped."
As far as the communication goes, Gasol acknowledged the Bulls might need to talk to one another more off the floor to figure out what’s happening on it.
"We try to do that amongst ourselves," Gasol said. "We have done it, but we got to do it more. It’s part of the process of what’s going on, understanding the type of team we have and improving."
The recent slide comes as the Bulls enter a challenging spot in the schedule. They have games against San Antonio and Dallas this week before a home game against Miami on Sunday that leads into a West Coast swing, which starts against the Golden State Warriors a week from Tuesday.
"We’re not playing well in any aspect of the game, so we’re not giving ourselves a chance to win," Thibodeau said. "Usually if you’re playing great defense and you’re rebounding the ball and keeping your turnovers down, you’re going to be in position to win no matter who you’re playing against, no matter where you’re playing. No matter who’s playing.
"But if you don’t do those three things, then you’re not going to be in position to win. We’ve been able to overcome injuries because we’ve been able to do that. Right now we’re not a multiple-effort team, we’re not concentrating, we’re not doing our job. We got to change that. We got to change it."
Sidenote: Has anyone that plays NBA2K15 noticed that when you go select your team and it shows the teams best player to rep the team, D Rose has been replaced with Jimmy Buckets?

prophetmeirParticipantI think its good, still shows a certain leadership on his part and holds him accountable for his defense and overall performance.

doubledribblerParticipantComplaining to the media isn’t anything new, but people are going to jump on it the first chance they get. If I’m an athlete I keep in mind that no matter what you say you end up losing in public opinion. Might as well go the Popovich route. At least that way you give them absolutely nothing to use against you or take out of context.
As for the Bulls. They have issues. They got way better offensively, but not so much defensively. Every guy they acquired in the offseason were/are offensive players. McDermott isn’t ready for prime time and has been hurt, Dunleavy has been hurt, Mrotic looks like he may have already hit the rookie wall, Noah needs time away to get right, Heinrich and Rose have been in and out, Thibs needs to lessen the minutes on Gasol and Butler, and Rose needs to become a more efficient player. That’s a lot of things. They are not impossible, but guys are going to have to stay patient and the coach is going to have to remember that the post-season is more important than the regular season. Chicago needs to focus on maintaining health. Getting into the East isn’t going to be a problem for them.

ItsVictorOladipoParticipantI didn’t see those comments as "complaining". When good teams go on losing streaks the media is bound to pepper them with questions, Rose seemed honest in his assesment, he didn’t call any individuals out by name. I think his comments were fair and accurate.

HitsterParticipantAny issues team mates have with each other should remain behind closed doors, the Bulls being minus Noah is a big loss too. Also D-Rose having only played 49 games from 2011-14 seasons maybe feels the will to win more than anyone and wants to make up for lost time.
Maybe he feels a bit of frustration that his game isn’t quite back to his MVP level yet despite averaging 24ppg and 6.8apg over the last 5 games. Does he worry that he might have to try to take over a game like he used to do but doesn’t feel that he can yet drive to the basket how he used to in case the knee goes again. Sooner or later D-Rose will have to try and find that extra gear again that made him the MVP, I want to see it as much as anyone being a big D-Rose fan and every game he plays well gets him back that little bit closer to being the old D-Rose.

Memphis MadnessParticipantThere are a lot of good NBA teams out there now, even in the East. How many BAD teams are there? Just a handful with Philly and the Knicks being the worst offenders off the top of my head.
Then, I was about to post a thread yesterday on how "you can’t count out the Cavs". Well, they still have LeBron. And Love. And Kyrie.
Mozgov is good. They picked up some other solid pieces too.
Still might not get them the top seed in the East, but BOTH conference playoffs will be about getting hot, staying healthy, and getting the right matchups.
The Cavs need to make Kevin Love their second option.
On the other side, isn’t D Rose supposed to be the leader? He should LEAD. Keep the guys motivated and make others around him BETTER. Does he do either one?
The Cavs and Bulls are two teams (with pretty much every other playoff team) who I could see winning it all, or losing in the first round of the playoffs if the matchups aren’t right. Heck, they might even play each other in the first round which should be really fun.

King CaluchaParticipantI also agree that it doesn’t sound like complaining. He’s just saying it wasn’t a good team effort. It would be pretty dumb if he were pointing out one of his teammates.

ExumInfernoParticipantIf you add the salaries of Gasol and J Butler together and then multiply by 2 you get Rose’s salary. But the first two score and rebound more, and shoot better than Rose from 3, the field and free throw line. It might be better if Rose didn’t make noise and tell the media there was a problem. When rookie Mirotic has a better PER than Rose that says something.
The defensive ranks, maybe it shows how Noah is very important. Or maybe it doesn’t but he has missed some games this year and was playing better last year.
The Bulls and Spurs have nearly an identical record right now, that sounds like it should be a good sign for the team.

properbreaksParticipantWhats showing is that now they are gifted offensively so they don’t feel like they have to slug it out with you on defense as much. Missing Noah is one thing, but even when he was hurt before they played all out. Now, they rely on their offense more than ever and don’t go as hard on defense. We’ll see if they can turn it up the rest of the year and more importantly in the playoffs

young waveParticipantIn all honesty I was never sold on the Bulls from the start of the season. Everyone ranted and raved about how they were such a powerhouse, and at times they have shown flashes. But even in those times when Butler and Gasol were killin it and Rose was showing flashes of himself…I still didnt believe. This is clearly a fragile team with a few more holes in the roster than expected.
Although I think its possible that they will reach their potential with time, this season for Chicago is unfolding without any surprises for me.

CochiseParticipantMy whole thing with Rose is I feel the team has kind of carried him for most of the first half of the season. Sure he has had some bright moments as he works to get back to health, but in watching the most of the games he has played nonchalant. Last night it seems he played aggressive and we see the outcome. So my question is was it really the fault of the Bulls as a team or was Rose just needing to play better?
