EndlessknightParticipantI was looking at the box score for tonight’s Lakers/Cavs game and couldn’t help but noticed that Kobe dished out 17 assists and including tonight’s game he’s averaging 9 assist per game in the month of Jan. Is it possible that Kobe could reinvent himself as a point guard this late in his career? Is so, how good could he be?

mixtape2003ParticipantWhen he was asked to play point a couple years ago when nash got hurt, he put up some good assist #’s , I believe it was are 14 or 12 assist in a few games. The problem is the Lakers do not have a reliable scorer so it may not last.

Dazzling Dunks and Basketball BloopersParticipantKobe’s always been a fantastic passer. He has such a high basketball IQ and the ability to see how a play will develop 2 or 3 steps in advance, which is an extremely rare skill that few players posess. I’ve always maintained that he could of been a great point guard if he had played that position throughout his career, but his competive instincts and talent just make him more inclined toward being a scorer.
As his natural abilities have eroded, I think he’s realizing that he can’t just score at will anymore, so he has adjusted to more of a facilitator role. Since teams still play him to shoot and he will always command a double team, he’s been extremely effective setting up his teammates.
At the beginning of the season, he was out to prove that he was still the same player he always was, probably to the detriment of the team. The days of him being a dominant scorer are probably over but he can still be an effective player for the rest of his career if he plays to his abilities, and right now his best ability is his experience and basketball IQ. Therefore, the role he is playing right now is perfect for him and the team at this point in his career.

TallmanNYCParticipantKobe has always put up a lot of shots. And frankly at times over the last several years too many. Certainly this year he has been shooting too much and missing too much to even give the Lakers any chance. So this reinvention could actually be really neat. 17 assists is kind of an amazing number. I’d love to see him try to discover new ways to win basketball games. It would be a neat use of that high basketball IQ (and frankly, just high IQ in general, the guy seems pretty smart off the court as well). If he decides to also crash the boards, that would be neat as well.
