As a lifelong Hawks fan, I’m finally starting to buy into the hype that this team is an actual contender.  I normally temper my excitement and expectations because my past experiences with Atlanta sports in general but the last two games against the 76ers and Celtics might have been the most impressive wins of the season…  I know, I know…those two teams aren’t any good, but hear me out.

We rested 3 of 5 starters in the 76ers game and 2 of 5 starters in the Celtics game.  Both were on the road and the beginning of a 4 game road trip.  Those are the type of games that, in the past, the Hawks would lose for whatever reason.  To see them win both games by double digits and hold 20 point leads in both games late without all of their guys is what I really love.

The Spurs have been winning and staying in games against teams with their own Big 3 for years.  It is a testament to the system and to the players coming off the bench.

    Thoughts?

They look good. There are quality pros at every position and they don’t have any ballstoppers. Any guy can have a great night and their system is a good match up with just about any other team.

Not trying to be pessimistic, but I have two observations that make me nervous:

    1. History tells us that a great regular season run means nothing.

    2. I’m worried about how they will create shots in a tough playoff series. They have phenomenal ball movement, but Teague really is their only true 1 v 1 creator, and teams will stop that in the playoffs.

They are doing great right now, and are certainly contenders if nothing les.

Al horford and Paul milsap can both create offense for themselves at key scenarios even if they are really playing well now within the teams system. They have shown the ability in the past to do that.

The team has really improved this year and have a real team ethic a bit like the Spurs. They don’t have a standout superstar but a very well drilled team with a nice mix of experience and youth.

Looking at the team stats, they are 2nd on points allowed so that goes a long way to highlighting why they are so successful but in no way are they purely a defensive team being 2nd in team assists and 7th in points scored.

Mike Budenholzer has done an excellent job so far as Head Coach having been a protege of Gregg Poppovich for many yearsat the Spurs and with a solid front office lead by Danny Ferry, the Hawks  have an great platform to push on in the next few years.

ive never been a fan of atlanta but I live here and have kept up with them all my life. And I can’t put any real stock into this "hot streak". If it’s one thing I know it’s that something is coming soon. This act they have been putting on can’t last long. Whether it’s a injury or just the east finally getting it’s act together I know the Hawks won’t keep this up into playoffs

You sound salty bro, support your hometown team. It’s not due to the weak east because they’ve been beating contenders in both the eastern and western conference

I keep hearing Atlanta’s system compared to San Antonio’s but the difference is San Antonio has Popovich, Duncan, Ginobli and Parker as their core leaders. These guys are legends that have done it so many times that doing it again is expected and never doubted. They thrive when the game is on the line and will perform in key moments. The Hawks have some decent experience too with Millsap, Korver, and Horford but it doesn’t even compare to the Spurs.

This team has its own identity and the comparison to San Antonio that has been made because a lot of their staff come from that organization is a stretch. Although I do think they can take any team 7 games and anything can happen in Game 7.
