Early in the season i made some comments on here about looney being really raw offensively and looking like a hustle pf rather then a sf. I just felt his skill development on the perimter was way too far behind to translate to the sf spot in the nba unless he stayed multiple seasons at ucla which seems unlikely. He does have really long arms and rebounds extremely well and can run the court and handle the ball a little.

but now in these past 2 games, looney seems to have progressed big time. This week he put up 27 and 19 vs stanford in a win. He hit 2/3 from deep and looked really good facing the rim. I didnt want to put too much stock into one game though. but then tonight he had another solid game vs cal getting 15 and 7 while shooting 7/12 from the field and hitting another three. But most impressive was his ability going one on one off the dribble. He had 2 plays where he dribbled hard then stopped on a dime and crossed over and shot a pull up jumper(one from the elbow and one from the baseline) and it looked really smooth both times. He also had 2 drives all the way to the rim where he had to finish with finnesse over outstretched hands and finger rolled it in, one a reverse. He has now hit 4 for 6 from three in the last 3 games and just looks far more comfortable with his stroke.

Its entirely possible he will regress and struggle here and there going forward but these signs are very promising flashes for a guy who is already considered a great athlete and defender with a 7+ wingspan. Could defenitely see him going top 5.

I agree with you saying he will go in the top 5. I haven’t watched the past two UCLA games that they won because they were playing so poorly before that. I just stopped watching them because they were so frustrating to watch against UK, ALA, CU, etc. Looney seems so be a big reason why they did win those last two. Wanted him to be more aggressive with the ball in the games that I watched. Good to know he is starting to take initiative. Will definitely be tuning in on Wednesday @ USC.

My thing is 2-3 years ago, this is where he was predicted to be. So maybe he’s just living up to what we thought, I don’t know about the KD comparison that he got back then, but we always knew he was talented and he’s has been the best player on that team by far. 7’3 wingspan, 6’9.5 with shoes on. I think he will rise to the top 5 as well if teams think he is a three and has more potential than Winslow, Johnson, and maybe Oubre. If he’s at the 4, I feel his stock may be lower.

People are getting so stuck on his production as a barometer for his lottery status/selection and what they are missing or forgetting is that his natural size and length combined with his college production will dictate where he goes. If he gets to NBA draft camp and measures 6’8".5 – 6’9" he will be a 5-8 pick with his current production. He has the potential to be a great defender with his length and a very solid option on offense because he runs the floor so well with his size.

He will be a very solid rotation player for years in the league.. not a superstar talent by any means, but hes most certainly the type of talent you need on a roster to win a title..
