TRC1991ParticipantIf so, can you give me some insight as to why they struggle year after year after year, I’m legitimately curious, and I have to admit that Oliver Purnell still possessing a head coaching job is surprising. Why can’t they clean up the Chicago area in recruiting? They play in a decent conference…They’ve produced a few good NBA players (q rich, wilson chandler)…I just don’t get why they constantly suck.
42-77 in Oliver Purnell’s tenure there with 12-21 being their best season…
DePaul has made the big dance just 2 times in the past 22 seasons…Almost as bad as Northwestern (another Chicago area team, however they have high academic standards that make recruiting a bigger issue)

GBeeParticipantim an alumnus but havent followed them closely in recent years. i thought their last best coach was dave leitao who combined solid recruiting and decent tactics. losing him was a big blow to the program. jerry wainwright was another huge setback. he was neither a good coach tactically and he couldnt recruit either. i think purnell is still feeling the effects of that regime. purnell is an ok coach tactically, he obviously has rapport with his players, but they’re still lacking in talent.
depaul simply has no recent history. the city as a whole doesnt care about the program. they dont even have their own arena. the other athletic facilities suck too and there’s no space near campus to expand. the student support sucks. even when i went there during the pat kennedy, q-rich, bobby simmons, lance williams, steven hunter, etc run, the student support was shtty. the games have no atmosphere. the students consist of a bunch of rich kids from the chicago burbs who have no other affinity towards the school and are too lazy to make the trip up to rosemont to attend home games. i can’t imagine recruiting visits to depaul have much on other schools.
purnell’s made some slight in-roads putting a dent in chicago recruiting, but not much. certainly not enough to compete with an even watered down big east. billy garrett was a good get but his dad’s on the staff, tommy hamilton’s cool. myke henry transferred in. but they can’t compete with the blue bloods. the blue chippers around the way usually go to the highest bidder and purnell runs a very clean program from what i hear. pat kennedy was a horrible coach, but he was willing to bend the rules to compensate the locals which is why he scooped up q, bobby and lance. it’s just too bad that he was such a poor coach because that could’ve set the foundation for the kids who are clueless about the history of depaul basketball of the 70s, early 80s. also for as much as kids rep the city, they want to get out.

druneave3ParticipantTrue on all accounts G but I also think Chicago politics is one key element in all this. Not sure quite how but corruption inside the CPS and DePaul’s unwillingness to give Public League coaches their cut for the players who are being pimped out.

casey38rayParticipantDePaul just can’t get Chicago talent. All Chicago players up and leave to play for out of state schools or they now ending up on Champaign and playing for John Grove and the Fighting Illini. Illinois is getting the talent in the Chicago area.
If DePaul win games then they will win the recruiting battle in Chicago.

i’m jus so offendedParticipantThey get that new stadium built, they may have something. Also, I think they should try to hire Jerrance Howard, former Illini and current Kansas assistant who recruits. I will always support giving new guys a chance over recycling these has been coaches, aka Purnell and Wainwright.

casey38rayParticipantDePaul needs to get some new uniforms as well. High School uniforms looked better than them. All the uniforms look too loose and not fit in with the times. I’m with you in hiring Howard from Kansas. He knows how to recruit the Chicago area pretty well and been with one of the best coaches for a good period of time.
