Pistons are on a 7 game winning streak since they let go of "J-Smoove". I never really watched the Pistons so I thought fans exaggerated when referring to Josh Smith, but it is now clearly apparent that he was holding this Pistons team back, where would this team be if they got rid of him before the season started?

It is an amazing Example of addition by subtraction. The ball moves better, players are in the right position. Drummond is playing like a man possessed. Van Gundy gets to coach stress free, and most importantly the players seem to be having fun for the first time.

For the Detroit streak to be all about Josh Smith it would mean Houston should be much worse than before.  4 wins and 4 losses with Smith, but around 20 and 7 before he arrived.  The numbers say Josh Smith might be the link, but maybe Atlanta should be looked at.

Atlanta are at 27 and 8 and on top of the East, and no Josh Smith.

The NBA is now all about where Josh Smith used to brick shots, and his former teams are on a combined 13-game winning streak.

One strange thing in this is B Jennings who used to be as ineffecient as J Smith was, but in his last 5 games he is around 47% from the field.

This is like a new Linsanity, maybe it can be called Pay Someone $30,000,000 Not To Play And Win Every Game.

But something has to break now, it is Pistons versus Hawks.

I think back to posts made by us Pistons fans with the Jennings and Smith signings at that time.

Most of us thought Knight would develop and to wait one more offseason before signing a quality SF free agent as that offseason alot of SF were available. Hayward and Parsons would have been nice. Deng or Ariza would have options also.

With $22mill paid to Jennings and Smith, that could of paid for Knight and Chandler Parsons.

We could of realistically had a team of Knight – KCP – Parsons/Deng/Ariza – Monroe – Drummond

is the cold the reason the toronto raptors have such a hard time signing free agents from other teams? i could have really bad memmory, but who was the last starter quality free agent they signed from another team?

Yes the city of Dallas is nicer to live than Detroit. These were just examples.  Parsons / Ariza / Deng were realistic examples. Lebron and Melo were also free agents but this is not realistic examples.

Ariza and Deng were already playing in the east. Drummond and Monroe are two young bigs which as a FA would be good to play with (everyone loves playing alongside a talented centre in your team).  The window of opportunity would be longer due to their younger age than say Bosh/Wade (Heat) or Dirk/Chandler (Dallas)

Let’s not forget that the addition of jodie meeks has also been huge for them. He’s good for 12-15 pts every night and gives the bigs room to operate. He is the type of player that fits great in SVG’s system.

Most important part is that the games ‘flows’ a lot better without Smith, and that results in better looks for everybody (hence others like Jennings/Meeks etc. are shooting better). Spurs show it every year and GSW this year as well how important ball movement is, and that having a player that stands still with the ball in his hands disrupts the game for all his teammates.

The problem was absolutely Smith. You don’t just have to look at Detroit. Take a look at what he is doig in Houston. The other night he lead the team with 21 points off the bench, but he had a -19 plus/minus, while everyone else was slight negative / slight positive. Basically, he was out there chucking shots while his team fell further and further behind. Miniscule basketball IQ and no real idea of a team concept. Just a horrible player at this point.

I have been getting negged all season with my low opinion of Smith. I don’t feel vindicated. I am just so damn glad his is not on my favorite team anymore.

The move also freed up shots and space for Jennings, Drummond and Monroe. In Jennings case it might have light a fire under him when he realized Van Gundy will dump a player that is hurting the team.

I dont think Smith should get all the blame for his terrible play in Detriot. Although they are playing alot better without him now I would say it has more to do with the players on the court fits together as a team and they have the ball in the right players hands with a gameplan that works.

First I don’t know what management was think signing Smith with Drummond and Monroe already in the post. Also while Stan VanGundy tried thinking alittle out of the box to try and make the fit work, i think it was a terrible decision to try and let Smith run the offense and play point forward in a sense with him getting the ball as soon as it’s passed halfcourt and him trying to make plays for himself and others very often.

As for him in Houston I think they learned quickly he’s not gonna fit offensively with the starters what most already assumed. But having him coming off the bench is alot more effective because he’s a difference maker when he’s on the court especially defensively.

Did you watch Smith in Detroit? Ball stopper.  Has lost a noticeable portion of his athelecism.  Pouted during games.  Long twos.  Brick threes. PER in the dumper.  And Van Gundy – a proven NBA mind – decided they were better off dumping him and eating $27 million.  Heck, they couldn’t even trade him.  That says enough right there.

If you paid attention when he was cut, he said he would only consider places where he would start.  First, I would at least say  "somewhere I can win."  Second – earn it dude.  You have a reputation, but it doesn’t mean jack to a new team.  PS – It looks like the Rockets may have already realized they are better off with him coming off the bench.  Problem is – with no real competition for shots on the second unit, he pretty much just chucks it up, scoreboard be damned.

Sure it was a problem of fit, but it was him that wouldn’t / couldn’t fit.  Low basketball IQ and can’t figure out his own strengths during a game.  It is too obvious that he was the problem.  I used to say that Josh Smith was just good enough to lose you a close game.  Now I believe he is capable of losing a game all by himslef.  Second biggest mistake of Dumars’ career.  As a 40 year Piston fan, I am so glad he is gone.

I’m mad that Joe Dumars stepped down and doesnt have to take the fall for Smith’s signing. Monster contract, slowed the progress for the current bigs, and now still has to pay him for the next what 5-6 years?
