HitsterParticipantI thought that Danny Ainge may have wanted another pick at least as Rondo is likely to be receptive to resigning with Dallas. The Celtics get a nice expiring deal in Brandan Wright although I’d guess they may use him in rotation. Jameer Nelson has a player option for next season worth $3.25 million and I assume he’d rather be on a contender att this stage of his career. But for a very solid PG that is a cheapish salary and Boston may keep him to help mentor Marcus Smart and cap flip Nelson in a trade in due course if a contender ever needs a back up PG or their main PG gets injured.
Boston are clearly in full rebuild now and so Danny Ainge is looking to acquire picks and so gets a first and 2nd rounder from Dallas in the trade. The first rounder next year is likely to be later lottery but it gives Ainge draft options. ESPN have said that Boston will get some sort of trade exception for Rondo which again gives Ainge further options.
Dallas get one of the best creative PG’s in the NBA and gives them a very good backcourt to go alongside Monta Ellis. Add in Chandler Parsons, Tyson Chandler and Dirk and you have an excellent starting 5. Brandan Wright’s minutes from the bench will be missed and I could see Dallas perhaps going to a 3 guard line up during games when Raymond Felton is fit.
Monta Ellis is only a couple of months older than Rondo so their careers can run in tandem potentially. Chandler Parsons is a young player on the up, Tyson Chandler a very good defensive anchor and even t 36 years old Dirk is still a top quality player.
Dallas will have Rondo and Tyson Chandler out of contract next summer and Monta has a $9 million player option so Donnie Nelson will have a bit of negoiating to do. With Chandler Parsons going to be on $15.3 million next season, I’d see both Rondo and Monta looking for around that as a starting figure so Dallas might have a hefty cap. Luckily Dirk now takes below market value and Tyson Chandler’s ballpark salary might be about $12 million a year going forward using Andrew Bogut’s latest contract as a decent reference point.
If Dallas can resign this core, it will stretch the cap a bit but with a new TV deal kicking in and the cap rising then Mark Cuban will likely pay up. The bench may be a bit thin in big man depth although they have got the untried Dwight Powell in the trade but they can add a veteran FA or two if needs be this season and they would be an attractive option for veteran FA’s next summer

220ParticipantIt just seems like Boston didn’t get enough back for Rajon Rondo. Good deal for Dallas even if Rondo doesn’t resign, but it’s a great deal if they lock him up long term.
