    Rudy Gay 3 year extension.
$40m with final year opt out.

What are you thoughts on the amount?

Less than what I thought it would be.

Good timing. Sacramento decided they would keep Rudy Gay the team has been rebuilding too long and is not ready to attempt another rebuild with these team currently contending for a playoff spot.

If they make the playoffs with Gay putting up the stats hes putting up now Gay easily leverages the max. Sacramento seems to have a good young nucleus built around Collison, Gay, and Cousins and locking up Gay is committing to this team and showing you have confidence in them.

Im glad to see the Kings finally able to get a good player to commit without "testing" the market. I like the signing quite a bit; this will allow the Kings to field almost the same team as they are currently over the next few years with around $10 million in cap room to look for better backups and veteran role players. This contract should also ward against Gay feeling comfortable with his income enough to let down his level of play ( something that does indeed happen) as he will be playing for big money when his contract releases just as the new TV deal will explode the salary cap.

When you see some guys like Hayward and Parsons getting over $15 million a year on their new deals, you could say Gay’s contract should be at that level. But when you consider Deng who is nearer in age to Gay got $10 million a year, I feel the new deal is fair to both sides and Gay has a mega payday this year.

Good to get a deal signed nice and early, gets a possible FA target off the market too.

Like Hitster said, it is good value considering how similar, but younger all-around small forwards have gotten over 15 mil a year and a guy like Luol got around 10.  I personally think Rudy brings more to the table on offense and that is exactly what the Kings need.

It is nice to see them have a nice duo in Gay and Cousins (saw too many "gay cousins" jokes on B/R), a duo featuring very skilled all-around players.  It will be interesting to see who else currently on this team is viewed by management as long-term complements to these guys.  Not to mention a possibility of bringing in a third borderline all-star caliber player to form a "big three".

My question to you guys is whether you think Darren Collison could be a franchise point of the future.  Or do you think maybe Ray McCallum could fill that role?  When the team is ready to compete, who will be the starting shooting guard, Ben McLemore or Nik Stauskas?

I think Stauskas will be the starting SG when this team makes playoffs, he’s a better passer and ball handler than McLemore, which makes him a better fit alongside Gay, who is not great at either, and Collison, who isn’t a pure point guard.

Plus, I think he has more confidence in his shooting ability.

Although Collison can play off ball, I’ve always viewed him as somewhat of a pure point guard.

Rudy was overpaid on his 2nd contract but maybe no more so than some guys coming off their rookie deals this summer. Whatever we may think of Rudy Gay as a player he is a proven scorer, fairly durable with over 10,000 career points still in his late 20’s so this type of contract is his market value.

The Kings have him resigned until 2017 at least so Rudy can just concentrate on playing basketball for them over the next few years. He has a player option in 2017 so has the chance to get one more big contract or he has the back up security of a one year player option of $13/14 million, so Rudy has a nice fall back option.
