TimeForNineParticipantNo doubt this will stir up some controversy. Derrick Rose said that he is sitting out games with thoughts to life away from basketball. While staying healthy is incredibly important for the rest of his life, someone in the comment section of this article brought up a great point. Construction workers can’t take days off and get paid because they have concerns about chronic issues later in life.
What do you think? Is he doing the right thing or should he play in games since he is being paid millions to do so?

r377Participant82 games plus playoffs is alot of toll on the body. Popp has extended Duncan’s and Manu’s career by resting them.
I dont’ have a problem with him resting, in fact with his injury history I would be surprised if the Bulls risked playing him 65+ games

HitsterParticipantThe Bulls are paying him mega money which he earned by being MVP in 2011 but he has only played 53 games in regular season since he became MVP. I know he has had an ankle issue too recently so needs time to recover from that but the Bulls need him fit and in form come play off time.
To compare his situation to Tim Duncan’s is a bit different, D-Rose is 26 years old and Duncan only started minding his minutes when well into his 30’s. I hope that the ACLs will not effect D-Rose long term as he could have another decade in the NBA easily.
I wonder whether he really needs to look to refine his game and maybe moves away from such an athletic type PG and becomes more a creator and relies on his mid range and 3 point shooting more. The one great advantage D-Rose has is as a PG he can set his own tempo to play to.

llperezif im the bulls, ive grown accustomed to playing without him so my biggest priority would be to make sure he stays healthy for the playoffs. If that means taking games off, so be it. Even if he’s cleared to play, im just gonna let him rest as much as derrick believes he needs. Of course all this will be taken into consideration next time his contract is up, i cant justify max for a guy who cant go consistently. And his type of game doesnt age well if he cant go full speed.

TheArtistPaysthePriceParticipantJust because construction workers aren’t powerful and self aware enough to demand days off doesn’t mean other people shouldn’t.
Go read The Jungle by Upton SinClair.
Thibs is my favorite coach but he does work guys to hard and its shown that a Popovich approach is better short term and long term.

Lotto StudParticipantAt the rate he’s going, he will put the Bulls in an Allan Houston situation.

Dale WorthingtonParticipantI think he’s mentally weak.
The Bulls aren’t paying him $17 million/year so he won’t be sore for these imaginary business meetings in 20 years that he speaks of.
This isn’t a concussion problem we’re talking about where potential neurological damage would be at stake.
This is a knee injury, a serious one, I know, but one that he has FULLY recovered from.
If he doesn’t want to play because he’s scared he’ll be sore in 20 years (terrible excuse, I might add), then the Bulls should be able to pro-rate his salary.
Remember, he made no mention of resting for the playoffs. This was strictly so he could prevent soreness decades down the line.

Robb_CParticipantI agree, he’s creating a future problem in the locker room as well with this "i’ll play when im ready bs" its undermining Thibs hardnose mentality and im sure Rose is getting away with it because he has the support of the front office..
Noah and the Bulls were working their ass off carrying this team while Rose was out, now Rose is back and he doesnt want to play but he still considers it his team.. The Bulls need to cut their loses on this guy before he becomes a cancer…

IndianaBasketballParticipantDerrick Rose isn’t the most PR savvy person lol. We all know that by now. He’s said plenty of head scratching things. I wouldn’t make too big of a deal about this though. He’s also said in the past that it wouldn’t matter if he got injured another 10 times… He’d still work his way back every time because he just loves to play basketball.
I just see this as a guy who’s been through a lot the last few years. Two major knee surgeries/monster rehabs, a baby born, a ton of criticism, etc. It does affect you mentally. He’s clearly committed to the game though. You have to be in order to work yourself back mentally and physically from injuries like these.
I’m personally still rooting for the guy. Since the Pacers won’t win a title this year, I’d like to see Rose lead the Bulls to one.

HitsterParticipantThe rest of the Bulls locker room could turn against D-Rose, several of those guys worked really hard to get them into the play offs in 2012-13. Plus what will Coach Thibs and the owner think of it. The owner would have to sign off D-Rose’s next contract etc.
I do wonder if the injuries have knocked D-Rose’s confidence a bit especially when he had the second ACL. I would hope the more he plays and the longer he stays injury free then the better he will get. Also as I said above if he is unable to play quite the same way before he will have to look to refine his game.
There is a thought at the back of my mind, have the ACLs done some serious damage and perhaps D-Rose has been told not to play too many years in the NBA. Do we have a possible Bynum or Roy situation here, if D-Rose may be looking at a shorter career timeframe does he want or need to push himself if he knows he may not have to chase another contract.
He had a top rookie deal, got a max 2nd deal, made a fair bit in endorsements so I’d hope he’d be fairly well set certainly by the end of his current deal.

Lotto StudParticipantAny time Kenny Smith’s legs hold up better than his ankles, that’s a problem!
